BRANDYBUCK, BRANDYBUCKS (of Buckland). Brandybuck FamilyA Hobbit family of the Shire. A most important one containing a strong Fallohide strain. The family descended from Gorhendad Oldbuck, who about 3A2340 moved to Buckland from the Marish and changed his name to Brandybuck. The head of the family was the Master of Buckland and lived ever after in Brandy Hall. In genuine Hobbitish the name was Brandagamba, which meant "march-buck" or "borderland-buck. A Hobbit family, originally living in the Marish. There they were quite influential. The family was descended from Bucca of the Marish, who was the First Thain of the Shire. 3A1979. The heirs of Bucca were also Thains until 3A2340. Then Gorhendad Oldbuck moved to Buckland and changed the name of the family to Brandybuck. Gorbadoc ‘Broadbelt’ Brandybuck Grandfather of Frodo Baggins and great-grandfather of Meriadoc Brandybuck. Gorbadoc became Master of Buckland on the death of his father in 2910. Gorbadoc was known for serving large meals at Brandy Hall and he was nicknamed "Broadbelt," probably in reference to his girth. Gorbadoc's date of death is given as 2963 in the Brandybuck family tree. However, in The Fellowship of the Ring it is said that Drogo and Primula Baggins were visiting Gorbadoc when they drowned in 2980.

Last Thain of the Oldbuck-line. 3A2340: He crossed the Brandywine River and settled in Buckland. Founder of Buckland and the Brandybuck family. Gorhendad Brandybuck was the first Master of Buckland. He built Brandy Hall and changed the family name to Brandybuck. His heirs were Masters of Buckland. The Thainship was taken over by the Took-family. Gorhendad was married. His wife is unknown. This land was called Buckland and Gorhendad changed the family name to Brandybuck. He began the excavation of Brandy Hall, the ancestral home of the Brandybucks in Buck Hill. Gorhendad Brandybuck was the first Master of Buckland, the title held by the head of the Brandybuck family. From him were descended numerous Brandybucks including Merry Brandybuck. Gorhendad is a Welsh word meaning "great-grandfather."

She was present at Bilbo's Birthday Party in 3001 (Third Age), when she was just sixteen years old. After their marriage, they were frequent guests at Primula's family home of Brandy Hall in Buckland. One evening in 2980, Drogo and Primula went boating on the Brandywine River and drowned. There were a number of rumors among Hobbits as to how this occurred, but as Hamfast Gamgee remarked, "Boats are quite tricky enough for those that sit still without looking further for the cause of trouble." (FotR, p. 31) Frodo was left orphaned and alone at Brandy Hall until Bilbo Baggins invited him to come and live at Bag End. A primula is a primrose - a type of flower. Female Hobbits were customarily named for flowers.
