Real AccountingSolutions, Inc.

Real Accounting Solutions, Inc. was formed on October 1, 1997 by Rena Laws Pilkenton. The company was formerly operating as L. Sheehan, Accountant with Rena serving as the offi ce manager for the Lenoir location when she decided to purchase the accounting practice from her boss, Lynn Sheehan.

Located on the Connelly Springs Rd in the Whitnel area, the company changed tax software immediately and began offering electronic fi ling and refund anticipation loans to attract new tax clients. As the tax client base grew, the company began to compete with the national chains like H & R Block and Jackson-Hewitt, often saving clients hundreds of dollars in tax preparation fees. The business has continued to grow and build a solid reputation in Lenoir over the years. Real Accounting is proud to celebrate 17 years in business this fall.

The company offers bookkeeping services, bank reconciliation, sales tax fi ling, payroll services, income tax fi ling for businesses and individuals, business consulting as well as fi nancial statement preparation. Our clients love our prompt, professional service and our no-nonsense approach to running a business. If you are in the market for an accountant or tax preparer, give Real Accounting Solutions a call at 757-9715. You will be so glad you did.

Granite Falls Brewing Company, or “GFB”, is proud to be located in the historic Granite Bottling Works (1903-1978) and Pepsi-Cola Bottling plant (1978-2012) where they celebrate “111 years of Beverage Production and Bottling Onsite.” GFB produces world-class, award-winning craft beers from a 31,690 square foot conglomeration of three warehouses on a 2.07 acre site adjacent to downtown Granite Falls. The property enjoys a panoramic view of the Blue Ridge Mountains at its rear. GFB was recently blessed to have won 2014 Taste of Hickory for “Best Carolina Brewery.”

GFB’s founders like to tell it that they “built a building inside of a building that already had a building hidden inside of it.” The main 1962 warehouse annexes and in various places entombs the original 1903 “Bolick’s Bottling Plant”—this century-old brick building still stands as and within the walls along the left side of the main building and the lobby interior. As the locals tell it, Bolick’s Bottling Plant is the site where the recipe for Cheerwine (simply referred to as “Cherry Cola” at the time) was invented.

In its early years, Granite Bottling Works produced thirty-fi ve cases per day and delivered product by horse and wagon. In 1978 the Bolick family sold Granite Bottling Works, which by then had grown into a major enterprise bottling and distributing Double Cola, My Cola, Cheerwine, Sun-Drop, and eleven other drink varieties across a twelve-county area of northwestern North Carolina, to Coca-Cola Bottling Company of Asheville. Three minutes later, this same November day, Coca-Cola Bottling sold the facility to Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Hickory, N.C., Inc. In December 2012, Mastroeli-MacNeil Equity Investments, LLC, a husband-wife pair of Caldwell County investors, fi nanced the purchase of the original Granite Bottling Works property from Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company. The owners fi nanced a painstaking build-out, and are proud of the adaptive reuse of this warehouse/manufacturing space into a funky Southern Gastropub restaurant, Supper Club-style music venue, museum, and old-style "watering hole" with its wraparound 103-foot-long tasting counter, rumored to be the longest bar in North Carolina.

GFB’s Brewmaster Zach Hart began brewing in 1997 with Big Horn Brewing Company in Arlington, Texas. Zach attended the American Brewers Guild in California to study Engineering & Brewing Science, and graduated in 1999. He helped to open The Mash House Brewery and Chophouse in Fayetteville, NC in December 2000 where he spent twelve years as its Brewmaster. Zach has won 10 Gold medals in six years at the Carolinas Championship of Beers, and landed 2nd place Best of Show for his barrel aged stout in 2007. He was featured on the front cover of All About Beer Magazine for September 2004 titled “Who Brews the Best.” At the Great American Beer Festival, Zach scored a Silver medal for his English Style IPA in 2001. Zach is joined by Brewer Brad Myers, formerly of Olde Hickory Brewery.

GFB is honored to have Maggie Roberts ([email protected]) as its sales consultant. Maggie encourages the adventurous to order a beer fl ight, take a brewery tour, or dive into the eclectic menu, learn why GFB enjoys 7,600+ Facebook followers and 170+ fi ve-star reviews, and discover whymany hail Granite Falls Brewing Company to be IN A GLASS BY ITSELF!

Bernhardt Furniture Company celebrates its 125th anniversary by reaffirming the company’s founding values of making quality furniture and building a strong community for its employees. Bernhardt’s history is one of creativity and passion for the artistry of furniture making united with a deep commitment to people and relationships. Unique by today’s standards, Bernhardt remains a family-owned business that is deeply committed to the welfare of the local community. In 1889, John Mathias Bernhardt founded the first industrial venture in rural Lenoir, North Carolina, which would later become the Bernhardt Furniture Company. Leveraging the region’s natural resources and local woodworking skills to strengthen the local economy, he opened his factory with vast ambitions and twenty-five employees. In the twelve decades since, the company has mastered and refined its craft to become a leading diversified global furniture manufacturer. From humble roots making oak bedroom furniture, Bernhardt capitalized on the evolution of the home by adding other styles and categories of residential furniture throughout the twentieth century. Expanding to new markets, it introduced a contemporary furniture brand, Bernhardt Design, in 1980. Bernhardt Hospitality was created in 2009 to serve the growing travel and leisure industry. Bernhardt is currently one of the largest family-owned companies in the country and employs people on six continents. Its furniture is found in homes, offices, hotels and universities around the world. Now led by the fourth generation, the Bernhardt family has been intimately involved throughout the company’s history. However, Bernhardt’s success comes from the work of more than just one family. Generations of artisans have passed their expertise to the next, while incorporating new technologies and innovative ways of making furniture. The creativity, ingenuity and dedication of countless fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, and husbands and wives form the bedrock of the company. At this milestone, Bernhardt Furniture Company acknowledges the values upon which it was founded and celebrates the individuals whose spirit of sharing has made a better community and a stronger company.

John Christian Bernhardt, left, took over leadership of Bernhardt Furniture in 1947. His son, Alex Bernhardt Sr., became company president in 1976 and then chairman and CEO in 1996

John Mathias Bernhardt founded Bernhardt Furniture in 1889 and sold oak bedroom furniture from New York City to as far west as the Rocky Mountains.

Caldwell CountyWhere Progress Meets Tradition

With all the changes that

have taken place in the world,

isn’t it nice to fi nd a location

where you can feel at home,

be in touch and yet not feel

rushed? Caldwell County

offers the best of all worlds

for its citizens. As part of the

greater Hickory Metro, the

county enjoys the amenities

and conveniences of city life

just a few miles way. Yet, travel

a few miles in another direction

and you are in the Blue Ridge

Mountains or in remote and

scenic Wilson Creek, a national

wilderness area.

In addition to a beautiful place

to live, Caldwell County Local

Government Departments and

Agencies are a great place to

work. As one of the largest

employers in Caldwell County,

the county’s government

provides jobs for approximately

508 full-time and 102 part-time

employees. Along with stable

employment, these county

employees have access to

health and dental insurance,

a retirement plan and other

benefi ts that allow them to plan

for the care and security of

themselves and their families.

In return, these employees

provide services that touch the

lives of Caldwell County’s 80-

thousand-plus citizens nearly

every day. As each of those

citizens walk through their day,

they are likely to experience or

witness the service a Caldwell

County employee provides.

Whether it be law enforcement

through the Caldwell County

Sheriff’s Department, or

through medical care with

Emergency Medical Services or

borrowing or returning a book

to a Caldwell County Public

Library; County employees are

there doing their job.

It’s County employees that

are providing affordable

water to over 9-thousand

citizens, operating community

house hold garbage and

refuse convenience sites and

providing animal control and

shelter, low cost spay and

neutering programs as well as

regular rabies clinics for pets.

When citizens marry, rejoice in

the birth of a child, or mourn the

loss of their loved ones, County

employees mark the events by

registering the marriages, the

births and the deaths. When

citizens build new homes

or businesses, it’s a County

employee that provides the

inspections to insure the health

and the safety of those that

enter the new buildings.

Medical and dental care

are available at the Health

Department clinic, vaccinations

for adults and children; all

of these are just a few of the

services that are offered by

employees of the Caldwell

County Health Department.

When life’s struggles arrive

at our door step, it’s the

employees of the Department

of Social Services that assist

us on our journey to the other

side.

And, when it’s time to elect

new offi cials to lead Caldwell

County’s government, its

County employees that guide

citizens through the voting

process at the Board of

Elections.

Practically every position within

your local government requires

specialized training, advanced

certifi cation and education

and we at Caldwell County

are proud of our extremely

dedicated and service oriented

employees.

The reach of County employees

extend all across this vast and

beautiful county and we are

proud to serve you, the citizens

of Caldwell County.

In 1985 the Haire Family was given a vision to build what is now Th e Shaire Center Assisted Living. Th is vision was not to construct a mere facility to “house” the elderly but to construct a home where love and good care would be common

place. A home where kindness would rule and the valuable worth of a person would never be questioned.

Some would say to conduct business with the heart is Impossible. But in the past years Shaire Center has never found this to be true. Yes, it takes more

dedication. Yes, it takes more giving of oneself. Yes, it takes more involvement, but yes, the reward of enriching another’s life is certainly worth it. Shaire Center

Assisted living has grown since 1985 with the addition of it’s 60- bed nursing facility and 22 apartments for seniors and now with our newest addition, our

Borrowers in need of money pawn an asset or article as security or pledge and receive a loan, which is lower in proportion to the value of the pawned article.A pawn ticket is issued to the borrower as a transaction record. On repayment of the loan plus interest, the pawned article is returned to the borrower.American Trade & Loan is one of the few small businesses still thriving since 1963.

We're proud to be homegrown!

The Hudson Uptown BuildingJanuary 12, 2002 the Town of Hudson opened the Hudson Uptown Building Auditorium and Events Center (HUB). The HUB, the former Hudson Elementary School, had undergone two years of renovation. The 7,000 square-foot auditorium is rented to the public for weddings, receptions, class reunions, business meetings, and more. The public’s response has been tremendous and the facility is rented almost every weekend.

The Hudson Board of Commissioners felt the facility could be used for cultural events as well and launched the idea of holding dinner theater on the beautiful auditorium stage. The fi rst production of dinner theater, “Dearly Departed” was sponsored by the Town of Hudson and the Bank of Granite and performed in June 2003 to a nearly sold out house every night. Dinner Theater in Caldwell County was born and the Public loved it.

Our 18th Dinner Theatre Production coming in October is “Fiddler on the Roof”. Fiddler on the Roof is set in Tsarist Russia in 1905 and is based on the story of Tevye the Milkman by Sholem Aleichem. The story follows father of 5 Tevye as he tries to uphold tradition in an ever changing political and social landscape. During a period of change for Russian Jews, the family learns to cope with the decline of Tsarist Russia and the tough laws enforced on the family and village of Anatevka. The musical is extremely popular all over the world, and was the fi rst Broadway show to play for over 3000 performances. The original production ran for almost 10 years. Numerous revivals and a fi lm adaptation keep introducing the show to new audiences. Tickets will be on sale mid-August at The HUB box offi ce.

Our last two performances were “Dearly Beloved” and “The Sound of Music”. “The Sound of Music was the largest production the HUB has done. All seats for dinner and balcony were sold out weeks before the productions begin. We even added an additional night. A folk from as far away as Greensboro, Charlotte, Asheville and Virginia have attended dinner theatre at the HUB. This is Caldwell County’s own homegrown dinner theater, with locals and out of town folk enjoying a bit of live theater and great food.

The Town of Hudson thanks Caldwell County for making the HUB a Homegrown Success.

Mr. Greer’s vision still lives on today, after 29 years, through current owners Jim and Tony McElveen.Losing a loved one - whether suddenly or expectedly - is the most diffi cult ordeal people face. It’s a grief stricken, confusing and emotional period. Yet, decisions must be made in preparing to say goodbye. It’s a time when people rely on someone outside the family to help make arrangements. Because there is so much trust given to that person, shouldn’t it be a community friend with a tradition of service?We will explain all the options available;

In 1965 Mr. R.W. Buchanan of Selma, Alabama decided that his rapidly growing lumber company, which at the time had several locations throughout Alabama, needed a distribution yard somewhere in North Carolina. The North Carolina location would need to be located in close proximity to some of his larger customers: furniture companies Century, Broyhill, Henredon, and many others. He visited the region and found a property that he believed would perfectly suit his needs on Highway 321-A in Granite Falls, just north of Hickory.Mr. Buchanan believed in operating his business on the Christian

principles of honesty and fairness, and these principles helped him develop loyal vendors and customers who appreciated him as a business partner.Mr. Buchanan began his North Carolina operation by hiring a general manager and a secretary for his offi ce staff. Beyond that he hired fork-lift drivers to receive and stack the lumber. Soon, kilns

and warehouses were added, along with more yard employees and truck drivers. The main function of Granite Hardwoods was to receive lumber, process it through kiln-drying and planing, and then ultimately, ship the fi nished product to furniture manufacturers, fl ooring manufacturers, cabinet-makers and others. That goal of providing Appalachian hardwood lumber to manufacturers is the same today. In 1986, Mr. Buchanan's grandson, Woody Buchanan, became the General Manager of Granite Hardwoods, and he continues in that position today.Granite Hardwoods and the Buchanan family have been blessed to hire and retain excellent employees who have spent many years with them. Among them, salesmen Bill Austin, Jim Mackie, Rick McCreary, Ed Herron, and Ridge DeWitt. Offi ce staff Margie Wilson, Tammy Matthews, and Addie Tucker, Sue Godwin. Yard Managers, Inspectors, and Drivers Tim Pope, Benny Kirby, Mike Sparks, Jeff Pope, Doug Saunders, Jim Caldwell, Craig Holtzman, Randy Robbins, Dwight Stone, Louie Campbell, Jessie Hamby, James Hall, George Simmons, Mario Benitez, and Arquimides Cruz.Today, almost 60 years after opening for operations, Granite Hardwoods, Inc., has expanded to include a Wholesale Division, an Export company, and in 2004, it added The Hardwood Company, which distributes fl ooring, windows, and doors into the housing market. The Hardwood Company is operated by manager Kevin Mahoney along with Scott Propst and Matt Garner.Granite Hardwoods, Inc. and the Buchanan family hope to continue to grow business in the Granite Falls and Western North Carolina region for many more years.

BENFIELD AUTOMOTIVE OPENED IN 2010Benfi eld Automotive started life in Caldwell county as Bush Parsons Chrysler. In 1984 Jamie Parsons started putting together a group of local people to run the new Chrysler store in Lenoir. Donald Wilson was one of the fi rst hired as a technician and Michael James started as a parts and service advisor. In 1990 David Henson joined the team as a technician. In 1987 Jerry Benfi eld started as another technician and in 1999 became the Service Manager. By the early 2000’s, Jerry became an owner in the Chrysler store. Jerry along with Donald, Michael and David have been a part of Caldwell county their entire lives and made up the core operation of Jamie Parsons Chrysler. Then as most of us already know, in 2009 Chrysler was back in bankruptcy. February 2010 left Walters Chrysler no choice but to close the doors. Jerry, as an owner, could not envision total shutdown. In September 2010 he acquired the old Hammary garage and started Benfi eld Automotive. He was able to keep most of the equipment from the Chrysler store so he could maintain the product. In addition to the equipment, Jerry was able to keep the great people that helped make the Chrysler dealership possible all those years.Today, Benfi eld Automotive is the source for all your Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep needs. From transmission repair to checking engine lights to changing your oil, Benfi eld Automotive provides the service needed. They also keep a small line of used Chrysler products for sale.

Realty Executives has a genuine care for people and understands all the pressures that come along with purchasing or selling a home. At Realty Executives, each agent is ready and happy to help customers through every step of the way. Realty Executives uses the most up-to-date venues to advertise homes: the Internet, which reaches thousands of potential buyers, the Real Estate Book, fl yers, networking with other agents and visual tours. A visual tour is an extremely effective marketing tool. When the home is viewed on the Internet, not only can potential buyers read about the property and view still photos, but they can actually see a tour of the inside and outside. Visual tours are very effective in marketing a home to out-of-town buyers. Realty Executives has had great success with visual tours. Also, customers who are looking for property to purchase have access to all homes in the Catawba Valley Multiple Listing Service. Realty Executives can send automatic e-mail notifi cations of new listings to clients. We also help clients with the loan process. Presently located at 203 Hospital Ave., NW, Lenior, on the hill next to Carolina Orthopaedic, Realty Executives fi rst opened its doors in 1996. In 2001, Glenda Wilson became owner and broker in charge. Wilson has 40 years of real estate experience, starting in 1974 in Florida. Then in 1980,

she received her North Carolina real estate license. Glenda has been very active during her career, serving on local and state levels of the Association of Realtors. Since then, they have added several more pieces of heavy equipment: a trackhoe, several more backhoes and more trucks. They have cleared, installed septic tanks and graded home lots throughout Caldwell County and surrounding counties.“It has been my pleasure to help put families in their new homes on lots we have gotten ready for them”, said David, when asked how it made him feel to ride through some of the developments and see the fi nished product.

“I feel very fortunate to have been so successful in this business, but I could not have done all this if it had not been for my loyal employees, along with all of the inspectors in the different areas who have worked with us.” David Whisnant & Son Grading is licensed in Caldwell County, along with Burke, Catawba and Iredell counties.

A-1 TERMITE AND PEST CONTROL HAS BEEN RIDDING HOMES OF EMBARRASSING PESTS SINCE 1966

Does this situation sound familar to you? It is late at night and you are just coming home from a movie or from visiting friends. You walk into the kitchen, fl ip on the light switch and fi nd that you have uninvited guests on hand. However, they don’t seem to enjoy or prefer your company so they scuttle back under the refrigerator, stove, sink, baseboards, cabinets and other cracks and crevices. These uninvited guests like to roam around at night, getting into your food supply, dishes, cups and cooking utensils. They never seem to mind their manners. They have no respect for your hours of hard labor in washing dishes and cleaning cabinets. They travel anywhere they please and contaminate everything they come in contact with.

After these pests have been around for a while, they seem to get braver. They start coming out in the daylight. This usually happens after they have built up a large population and are forced to search for food and water anytime - day or night. Along about this time you are going to entertain some of your friends or have the preacher over for dinner some evening. Sure enough, when your friends arrive, these uninvited guests seem to appear at the most unopportune time. This is an embarrassing situation to say the least.

Besides the fact, they are embarrassing to have around, these roaches eat and destroy large quantities of food. What they don’t eat, they contaminate.

Do these roaches become annoying to you, especially after you have tried getting rid of them with one or more of the common insect killers on the market? Does it seem that the more you do to rid your home of these pests, the faster they multiply?

Well, if you have had a similar situation at your home, don’t give up and sell, move out or burn the house down. There is a better solution to your pest problems. Caldwell Physicians Brings Specialty Care to Granite Falls

- PLUS -Topics in Digestive Health; Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy; and Audiology

As a convenience for our patients, Caldwell Physicians is pleased to announce the addition of three specialist services to The Falls Medical Park. Beginning this month, Dr. Terri Jaggers, gastroenterologist (digestive health); Dr. Mark Nenow, otolaryngologist (ear, nose, throat & allergy); and Dr. Kara Conrad, audiologist (hearing, hearing aids, dizziness, etc.) will see patients at The Falls Medical Park in Granite Falls. Each will also continue to see patients in their practices located inside Robbins Medical Park in Lenoir.

Topics in Digestive Health; Ear, Nose, Throat & Allergy; and Audiology

When Heartburn Becomes GERDNearly everyone knows how heartburn feels. The searing sensation in the chest, the sore throat and bitter mouth taste are no fun, but they are no big worry as long as they go away within a short time and don't return any time soon. Heartburn happens because the sphincter muscle or valve at the bottom of the food tube (esophagus) fails to close properly, letting the acidic contents of the stomach wash back up briefl y. This is sometimes called acid indigestion or acid refl ux. The burning sensation indicates that the lining of the food tube is being irritated. When heartburn happens occasionally, most Americans simply take an antacid or other remedy and consider changes in their eating habits. When the symptoms continue to occur frequently despite these measures it's probably time to see a doctor. Symptoms recurring more than twice a week or interfering with daily activities may qualify for the diagnosis of gastroesophageal refl ux disease (GERD). GERD can occur at any age. In fact, it's estimated that 35 percent of babies have GERD at birth. Although healthy and happy, these infants spit up or vomit frequently-a problem that usually resolves by their fi rst birthday. In children and even in some adults, GERD is characterized not by heartburn but by a persistent dry cough, asthma symptoms or trouble swallowing. Young children may be irritable and arch their backs during or shortly after feeding.Lifestyle measures that should be started even before occasional heartburn turns into GERD include:• weight loss;• avoiding cigarette smoke;• eating smaller meals;• not eating a snack just before bedtime and not lying down right after a meal;• wearing clothing that fi ts loosely around the waist so as not to put pressure on the abdomen;• sleeping on your left side;• elevating the head of your bed six to nine inches with wood or cement blocks (raising your head with pillows will not help); and• avoiding foods and drinks that trigger heartburn.Generally, acidic and spicy foods such as oranges, vinegar, tomatoes and grapefruit are culprits, but fatty, greasy foods such as french fries also trigger heartburn in some persons. Carbonated and caffeinated drinks may also bring on acid refl ux.When lifestyle changes fail to stop symptoms, or if symptoms persist or worsen, talk with your primary care doctor or a gastroenterologist.

Getting Help for Ear InfectionsEar infections are all too common among young children, and they create a great deal of pressure and stress for young parents and, sometimes, their doctors. An ear infection occurs when fl uid builds up behind the ear drum, often as a follow-up to a cold, the fl u or a nasal allergy. The eustachian tubes, which run from each middle ear to the back of the throat normally open and close to refresh air, regulate air pressure and drain secretions from the middle ear. When these narrow tubes become congested, conditions become ripe for an infection. Anyone can get an ear infection, but they are most common in children, in part because children have narrow eustachian passageways that are more easily obstructed. They also have less developed immune systems and are frequently in a day care or school environment around other contagious children. Symptoms in a young child are pretty easy to spot: waking up in the night, crying,

fussiness, tugging at the ears and a fever. An adult with an ear infection may note pain, a headache, and diffi culty hearing. Measures that can be taken to reduce the risk of recurrent ear infections include:• yearly vaccination against the fl u;• immunization with the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13);• frequent hand washing;• avoidance of tobacco smoke; and• reduced exposure to other children with respiratory infections. Anything that protects you or your child from colds and other respiratory infections can also reduce the risk of ear infections.

Don’t Let Poor Hearing Isolate YouHearing aids today are small and inconspicuous, resting in the ear or ear canal or dangling behind it out of sight. And in an era when young people walk around with Bluetooth and other receivers in their ears, who cares?Apparently, many Americans do care. About 63 percent of adults age 70 and over have impaired hearing, according to studies, but only about a fi fth of them are wearing a hearing aid. Most age-related hearing loss affects sounds mainly in the higher frequencies. The consonants s, h and f are high frequency so that means that they become diffi cult for the person to distinguish. When they occur at the end of a word, it sounds very much as if people are mumbling ... which they may very well be. The fi rst step is to make sure that the hearing problem is not just impacted ear wax. Put some ear drops in your ears or wash them out with an ear syringe. It this doesn’t help, your next stop is your physician’s offi ce. If there is no medical reason, such as a bacterial infection, ear drum damage or a tumor, your doctor will refer you to an audiologist. The technology of hearing aids has advanced greatly, even over the past decade. Older hearing aids merely amplifi ed sound, making all sound louder. Newer ones are nearly all digital, driven by a computer chip that converts the incoming sounds into digital code that is analyzed, adjusted and then converted back into sound waves that are delivered to your ears. Digital hearing aids can be programmed to meet your specifi c needs- amplifying only high frequency sounds, for example, and damping down background noise. Hearing aids differ mainly in size and the way they are placed in your ear. Some of the smallest ones are molded to fi t entirely inside the ear canal, making them virtually invisible. Slightly bigger ones fi t partially in the canal but not as deeply. A hearing aid can never return your hearing to what it once was, and it may take several weeks to get used to it. But eventually, the hearing aid will become a natural part of you that you take for granted, like your eyeglasses. You’ll hear better, and you’ll be better able to take part in the world around you.
