On View Through October 26Passing Through: Portraits of Emerging AdultsThrough painted canvasses and “sound portraits,” artist Kate Gridley marks the passage of 17 emerging adults as they come to realize their selves and claim their voices. Passing Through is an installation that uses the images and voices of many characters to expand the notion of portraiture beyond capturing moments of individual life to noting to noting psychological presentations of self in particular times, cultures, and places. Sponsored by the Middlebury College Museum of Art, Mahaney Center for the Arts, Director of the Arts, Town Hall Theater, Vermont Community Foundation, and the Growald Family Fund. September 2–October 26Hyper! Works by Greg HabernyArtist Greg Haberny describes his style as “completely loose and out of control.” He uses an array of materials, refusing to conform to a single medium. Melted crayons and Band-Aids add a vital texture to his work, while appropriated images of pop culture, like the iconic Mickey Mouse, create a tone of cultural and political critique. September 2–December 7Visual Weimar, 1919–1933This exhibit brings together select paintings, drawings, and etchings by some of Weimar Germany’s most prominent artists, including Otto Dix, George Grosz, and Käthe Kollwitz. The works confront the viewer with representations of this highly visual culture in Germany’s first democracy and the productive and sometimes problematic relationship between criticizing and participating in a culture that could not prevent its people from falling for Hitler’s Germany under the swastika. Free.Middlebury College Museum of Art, Overbrook Gallery

TAILGATING POLICY

Middlebury College has made a significant change to its policy governing tailgate gatherings at home football games.

Effective September 16, 2014, no alcoholic beverages of any kind will be permitted in the designated tailgate area. We’re taking this step to ensure that we’re able to provide a safe, healthy, and welcoming environment for all fans and athletes. We also believe this new policy is consistent with NESCAC’s sportsmanship statement, which states “It is incumbent upon NESCAC host institutions to provide a hospitable environment for contests to be played with an emphasis on fair play and an absolute ban on the consumption of alcoholic beverages by spectators.” It’s become increasingly clear that the consumption of alcohol in the tailgate area is inconsistent with this philosophy.

Venues, Parking Lots, and Tailgate Area n Public Safety will designate the tailgate area for use during any athletic event.

n The tailgate area will open for parking four hours before the start of the game (weather permitting).

n Alcohol is prohibited at all athletic venues, parking lots, and the tailgate area.

n Amplified music is not allowed at or near athletic venues, parking lots, and the tailgate area.

n Restroom facilities are located in the stadium. People at the tailgate area must use the restroom facilities in the stadium and must not cross the highway into the woods.

We look forward to a successful athletic season and to your support of these important changes.

Sincerely,Katy Smith Abbott, Dean of StudentsLisa Burchard, Director of Public SafetyErin Quinn, Director of Athletics
