Collins Corner Suddenly the Holiday season is upon us and the fall is yesterday’s news. It was not a bad fall with some good things happening in Hanover. Our football team, with squeaky losses to Penn and Brown, still finished up with a tie for third place in the Ivy League. A nice come back from a couple of years ago, and it looks like we have some promising talent going forward. Although we lost to Harvard, Homecoming was a great weekend with a remarkable crowd of over 10,000 people at the night game. Our venues changed a bit due to the late start. We held our first ever event in the Paul D. Paganucci Conference Center in ’53 Commons. It was a touching moment for those in attendance as we held a moment of silence in thanks and remembrance for all that “Pag” did to make that facility a reality. His vision and tenacity kept that initiative together for decades and I am sure he would have been proud of what has evolved. The bust of Pag stands in watchful guard over the entrance to the room. Our Class Meeting in Pag’s room was attended by thirty plus of us and covered a range of

topics. Harlan Fair reported on the status of the Sensational 60th reunion and it is firming up nicely. Ron Lazar reported on our stellar performance with the DCF and laid plans for our 60th Reunion campaign. Fred Stephens, our attendance guru, reported solid results thus far and encouraged your attendance to assure our record breaking attendance record. You will be getting a notice from the College regarding dorm reservations and if you prefer to stay in a hotel, there are still spots available at the Hanover Inn and Six South Street in Hanover. You will hear much more about the reunion in mailings this winter. Most importantly – be there. This will be our last big one, so let’s

make it a memorable one! During Homecoming, the Siegal’s organized a wonderful reception at the Zimmerman Lounge Friday evening and several of us represented the Class in the parade prior to the bonfire--a very large crowd and an impressive evening. After the Class meeting on Saturday we gathered at Salubre restaurant in Hanover and about 40 of us enjoyed a congenial pre-game luncheon. A brand new addition to the ’53 Commons is the student only facility now called Sarner Underground. Thanks to the generosity and vision of our classmate George Sarner, this basement area has been transformed into a multi- use area for a wide range of student meetings and activities. There is a very large common room that can be divided for theater, larger

gatherings or dance groups and several smaller meeting rooms comfortably outfitted with furniture, TVs and appropriate computer connections. This type of student use facility has been lacking in Hanover for many years and Sarner Underground is a welcome solution to that problem. These spaces have been very heavily utilized since opening last month. Another nice touch in our ’53 Commons is the completion of the display stand for our Class of 1953 Outstanding Classmate Bowl. This initiative was implemented and designed by Put Blodgett and Chuck Reilly quarterbacked the fund raising for its construction. The completed stand and bowl is now very prominently positioned in the Donald Carpenter Goss alcove just to the right as you enter ‘53 Commons. An accompanying plaque bearing the names of the recipients over the years is now in the works. The Class of 1953 Commons has now completed its first year as an integral part of the campus community and has enjoyed great success. The students love it, the class of ’53 is well represented throughout, the opportunities for varied uses has been most welcome and the dining options are a delight. While in Hanover, stop in and give it a try. They take cash and credit cards and anyone is welcome to come in and enjoy a meal.

I attended the Alumni Council meetings in late November along with Harlan Fair, who is the Thayer representative on the Council. Many items of interest were covered by President Carol Folt, Dean Charlotte Johns, and Athletic Director Harry Sheehy. Of particular interest was the selection of Michael Kurtz ‘73 as the next candidate to be nominated as a Dartmouth trustee. He was presented and spoke at length to the entire Council. My read is he is a very savvy guy who understands students, education and communications. I think he will be a great addition to our Board and you will be reading more about him prior to the election process. Attached is a link to the meeting summary. http://alumni.dartmouth.edu/leadership/council/sessions/MinutesofPastSessions/205thMinutes I heard President Carol Folt speak in Boston earlier this fall and again at length during the 205th Alumni Council session. I continue to be deeply impressed with her ability to lead. Dartmouth has been most fortunate to have a person of her stature to lead the institution during this interim

period. Bill Helman ‘80, chair of the presidential search committee, reports that they have made great progress in the selection process to find our next president and it should be done early in 2013. The Holidays are upon us and the traditional Christmas luncheons by the Class of 1953 will take place once again both in New York and in Hanover. The New York event will be at the Yale Club on Vanderbilt as usual on Wednesday, December 12th at noon. Cathy Callender is once again hosting this event and Bob Malin is working on attendance. Let him know you plan to attend at [email protected]. The Hanover celebration is the next day on Thursday December 13th. It will be held at the Parker House at Quechee at 11:30 AM. Please let our mini-reunion co-chairs, Dave and Bonnie Siegal, know of your plans to attend at [email protected]. These events are always enjoyable, festive and filled with welcome camaraderie. You will be receiving more information about both events in the weeks ahead. Make plans to be there – you’ll be glad you did. A couple of reminders. Now is the time to firm up your plans to attend the Sensational 60th June 10 – 13, 2013. If you have not given it a thought – do so now and come join your friends and classmates And don’t forget to reach out and be in touch with friends and acquaintances both new and old. It will not only please them, but you’ll be surprised how much it will please you. I wish you all a healthy and bountiful Holiday season. Best to all, Al More of the Friday Night Homecoming Kickoff

DARTMOUTH GREEN by Peter Bridges ‘53

An Acrostic Sonnet for the Sixtieth Reunion of the Class of 1953 Depression and World War...and then more war, As our professors primed us on the past, Reviewing errors older men had made. The College tried to teach us how to reason; Mount Moosilauke enticed us from afar; On weekends we cruised down to Smith, too fast, Unheeding, sure that youth would never fade Though some of us were failing every season. How fine, then, four years done, that grand June day: Good futures were forecast, with wealth and fame, Regardless of gray clouds. Few then could say Environments would worsen, conflicts flame. Eventually, most lived out happy years. Now nears our final; take it without tears. Peter Bridges ‘53
