James 4:8“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

Are You My Enemy?by Nicholas A. Waters

“My people are being destroyed because they don’t know me.”

Wait, read that again.God, speaking through

the prophet Hosea, said that almost 3,000 years ago.

He added, “You make (promises) and break them; you kill and steal and commit adultery. There is violence everywhere - one murder after another. That is why your land is in mourning, and everyone is wasting away,” Hosea 4:2,3.

God was speaking about and to His own people; they didn’t know Him, and they were destroying each other.

But why?“What the priests do, the

people also do,” Hosea 4:9.

As the priests (early-day Christians) became more comfortable with sin, the country did too. As a result, the nation of Israel tore itself apart as it played the part of a God-less culture.

But the people weren’t the problem. The priests weren’t the problem.

The behaviors of the priests and the people did point to the problem though.

Sin was - and still is - the problem.

“The wages of sin is death,” Paul wrote in Romans 6:23.

So if sin is the problem, then why are we still fighting and for what?

“You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of

what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it,” James 4:2.

Paul added for clarity that “we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the

heavenly places.” (Ephesians 6:12)

You are not my enemy. I am not your enemy. We have a common enemy; it’s called sin.

Dear God, forgive our sinful hearts. Forgive our ability to fight the wrong fights, and attack the wrong enemies. Open our eyes and convict us. Draw us back to You and to each other. In Jesus’ Name, we pray. Amen.

spaces since the inmate labor force was lost in July.

Other questions answered addressed the length of the contract, which would be five years with a non-performance opt out available to the City, and the option for residents to have an extra polycart for an extra four to five dollars per month.

After all audience questions were answered, the council moved onto the next agenda item, discussion/action to approve payment to Overland Trucking for the paving project which was the point of some heated discussion at last week’s Council meeting.

Last Monday, council members voted to pay Overland Trucking just under $400,000 upon completion of finishing several intersections, which at this point are admittedly not acceptable to any of the council.

The next several minutes of discussion and debate revealed an obvious difference in opinions between City officials. Eventually a motion was made by council member Mayberry and seconded by council member Washington to pay Overland Trucking with the understanding the company will come back and

finish the intersections. The City will hold back

approximately $45,000 to be paid once the paving is completed satisfactorily.

The vote resulted in a tie between the Council with Airington, Mayberry, Rogers, and Washington voting yes, and Anderson, Giltner,Hayes, and Lewis voting no. The Mayor broke the tie with a vote to pay the invoice.

The Council next unanimously tabled action to approve payment to Fox Engineering for the paving project.

The rehiring of Johnny Denny as a police officer was unanimously approved after a short executive session.

Resolution #836 was approved, removing Skylar Buckaloo as signatory at all banks and adding Vice Mayor Tabitha Hayes as signatory at all banks.

The final agenda item was approval for work on the repeater on the water tower.

A motion to adjourn was unanimous and the meeting came to a close.

The next regularly scheduled council meeting is set for Monday, October 10 at 7:00 pm.

Stolen Property Investigation Ends With Two Persons Charged

Devin Allen Thomas, age 22, Pauls Valley, was arrested Friday afternoon in Hutchison, Kansas following the issuance of an arrest warrant resulting from a September 10 theft in Garvin County.

Thomas and Christopher James Edwards, age 30, Pauls Valley, had been stopped by a Garvin County deputy on the date of the theft but a 4-wheeler in the bed of a pick-up Thomas was driving had not yet been reported as stolen.

Later the same day, the 2008 Honda 4-wheeler was reported as stolen and eventually recovered in Cleveland County. The case was turned over to the district attorney’s office where arrest warrants were issued for both Thomas and Edwards for Conspiracy and Grand Larceny.

Christopher Edwards was already being held in the Garvin County jail on unrelated charges when the arrest warrant was issued for him. The 4-wheeler valued at $1,500, was taken from an animal park near Wynnewood where a chain and a lock had been cut to gain entry to an area of the park where the ATV was being kept.

Both Thomas and Edwards have previous felony convictions. Earlier this year, Thomas was charged in Garvin County relating to a series of thefts around Pauls Valley. At the time of the alleged theft of the 4-wheeler, Thomas was out on bail and awaiting court in Garvin County.

Devin Thomas is currently on probation for felony charges in Kansas. Extradition proceedings are underway to bring him back to Garvin County. Christopher James Edwards has a lengthy criminal record for property crimes and is currently on probation by the Department of Corrections. He is being held in Garvin County jail.

One Person Arraigned On Drug Charges Following Attempt To Flee From Deputies

Garvin County deputies patrolling Friday near the east side of Pauls Valley arrested Franklin Joseph Gonzalez, age 37, Norman, following an incident where Gonzalez is alleged to have run from deputies and was then found hiding in storage room of a nearby house on Wagner Street.

In the immediate area where Gonzalez was apprehended, several different types of controlled substances were found by deputies. Gonzalez was apprehended and charged with several drug related felony crimes.

On Monday, he was arraigned in Garvin County District Court where he was charged for Possession of CDS with Intent to Distribute within 2000 Feet of a School. His bond was set at $25,000.

The drugs alleged to have been discarded by Gonzales following his attempt to flee from deputies included a significant amount of illegal substances including over 18 grams of methamphetamine, two marijuana cigarettes, another 8 grams of marijuana and 35 tablets of the controlled substances known as Xanax, Clonazepam and Hydrocodone. The drugs are alleged to be intended for distribution rather than for personal use.

Chickasaw Country And Coaches’ Cabana To Host Second Annual

Big Game Tailgate PartyFormer OU coach Barry Switzer of Coaches’ Cabana has

partnered with Chickasaw Country to host the Big Game Tailgate Party at the Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center on Friday, October 7. The Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center is located at exit 55 off Interstate 35 in Davis, Oklahoma.

Fans attending the Big Game Tailgate Party can stop at the Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center to participate in the tailgate party from 10 am to 1 pm.

Coach Barry Switzer of Coaches’ Cabana will be at the tailgate from 10 am to noon to sign autographs and meet fans. Fans will need to bring their own items to be signed by Switzer, such as clothing, footballs or helmets.

While fans visit the tailgate, and have the opportunity to meet Switzer, they will also be able to learn more about other tourism destinations in Chickasaw Country.

Tents will be set up with various vendors and destinations on-site to talk with fans and offer information. Some of the participating Chickasaw properties are: Treasure Valley; Artesian Hotel, Casino and Spa; and Jet Stream Casino.

Paige Williams, director of corporate development and tourism for the Chickasaw Nation, said partnering with Coaches’ Cabana creates awareness about destinations in Chickasaw Country that Big Game Tailgate attendees can plan to visit.

“Last year the fans attending the Big Game Tailgate Party participated in all of the vendor tents, and were able to gather information on additional tourism destinations in south-central Oklahoma, as well as play the games that each vendor hosted,” Williams said.

“Bringing Coach Barry Switzer to Chickasaw Country supports our goal of bringing awareness to the 13 counties in south-central Oklahoma as a travel destination.”

Chickasaw Country will serve hot dogs, chips and drinks at no charge and the Sulphur High School band will perform. There is no fee to attend and the tailgate party is open to the public.

“We hope that fans stop by the Chickasaw Nation Welcome Center on their way to Texas, or just to be a part of the tailgate, and experience a small offering of the many travel and tourism destinations in Chickasaw Country and make plans to return in the future,” Williams said.

For more information about the Big Game Tailgate Party visit: http://chickasawcountry.com/events/view/big-game-tailgate-party. complete the 48 yard TD run. Grove kicked the PAT and the Savages had the lead at 14-6.

Minco started off with good field position after a nice return into Savage territory. As the second quarter began play, the Bulldogs were threatening to score again, down inside the Savages red zone. On third down Sophomore defensive linemen Kaleb Patchell and Austin Kirtley both plunged through the line to meet the Minco Running back and forced a fumble.

Only a lucky bounce back to the Minco QB saved the possession, giving them one more shot from the 15 yard line. Good coverage by Keegan Moore and Colten Keith forced the pass incompletion and the Savages took over at their own 15.

Wynnewood moved down the field in 11 plays that featured Marcus Knowles, Keegan Moore, Brody Odom and Jamey Williams. Colten Keith connected with Karsten Mathis on a 22 yard pass completion to the Minco one yard line where Keith scored again on the one yard run. Grove completed the PAT and the Savages held a 21-6 advantage.

Minco took the Wynnewood kickoff and moved down the field on the back of Tucker Halstead. In two plays they

moved from their own 40 to the Savage 20. That’s where the defense held. Brody Odom and Keegan Moore sniffed out a screen and dropped the Bulldog for no gain. Jamey Williams came in from the secondary like a blur to stop Minco QB Shannon Williams for a loss.

After another screen attempt, the Bulldogs attempted to convert a fourth down pass play, but Karsten Mathis shot off the edge and sacked Williams for a loss of 11 and ended the drive. Wynnewood took over at its own 42 with just over 2:00 to play in the half.

The Savages moved down the field to the Minco 2 yard line on an eleven play drive. During that drive they exhausted all their timeouts. With :13 seconds on the clock the Savages elected to go to the air. A jump ball to Karsten Mathis came up just short. The Field Goal team was hustled out to kick, but the angle was too tough and the ball bounced off the right upright as time expired. The halftime score remained 21-6 in favor of the Savages.

The second half didn’t start well. Taking a page from the Savages play book, the Bulldogs kicked a high onside kick. The ball bounced off a Savage shoe into another

Savage face mask and right back into the Bulldogs hands. Minco had excellent field position and momentum coming out of the half.

It took Minco 10 plays to move down into scoring position. Aided by a mysterious pass interference penalty, and another unsportsmanlike conduct that wasn’t even assessed in yardage or on the down marker. The Bulldogs found the end zone and the two point conversion to draw closer at 21-13.

The next kickoff from the Bulldogs the Savages moved up and were ready for the high onside. The problem with that was Minco kicked a slow roller. It seemed to die after eight yards and with three Savages watching and waiting for kick to go 10 yards, a Minco Bulldog burst in and recovered as the ball slowly rolled past the ten yard limit.

The Savages were shell shocked from the last few minutes and it showed as QB Shannon Williams fired a strike to Charles Sanders. The PAT again failed and the score stood 21-20 with Wynnewood still in the lead. Minco was still in trick mode on the kickoff, but Wynnewood was able to recover the onside with good field position. A quick three and out by the Savage offense brought on punter TJ Grove.

Minco got great field position from the return and were able to punch it over the goal line for another Tucker Halstead score. Halstead repeated the same trick and took it across for the PAT. The score stood at 28-21 in favor of Minco, as the Savages trailed for the first time.

Minco again went with the slow roller onside and Kaleb Patchell made a great recovery to set up Wynnewood with great field position. Twelve play drive netted zero points and Grove came on to pin the

Bulldogs inside their own 10 yard line.

The fourth quarter began with suffocating defense from the Savages. Kirtley, Patchell, Rodney Knowles, Mathis, Odom, Moore and Peters all provided great pressure with Keith, Williams, Hudson, and McCann all providing great coverage.

Seven plays and Minco punted, and the Savages had great field position again.

Beginning at the Minco 40, Keegan Moore found some room on the right side. Jamey Williams picked up the first down and then Keith rambled off right tackle for another first down. Marcus Knowles took the next carry into the endzone for the Savage TD. Freshman TJ Grove came into kick and the Savages were all tied up at 28.

Minco took the kick from Wynnewood and picked up right where they left off. A long TD run from QB Shannon Williams extended their lead to 34-28 after the PAT failed. Short on time the Savage offense took to the air to try and catch up, but had to punt back to the Bulldogs.

Minco went on a grind it out approach and despite a stellar effort from the worn out defenders, the Bulldogs were able to punch another in and extend their lead to 42-28.

This loss drops the Savages to 0-1 in district play. Wynnewood will face off against perennial rival Wayne on Friday, 7:00 pm kickoff for the district match. Wayne is currently 4-0 and ranked number 2 in the OkPreps poll and number 5 in the MaxPreps poll.

Wynnewood is currently 2-2 with losses to top 5 in 3A Sulphur and top 5 in Class A Minco. Wynnewood is currently not ranked in the top ten in the OkPreps poll and number 12 in the MaxPreps poll.

The country club was the scene of one of the most brilliant entertainments ever staged in Wynnewood last Friday night when the Rotarians entertained complimentary to the School Faculty and the Rotary Anns. The invitations to the teachers were most unique and accepted in a body. Mrs. J. A. Lawrence and Mrs. Arthur Mitchell, decorating committee, had scoured the countryside and secured great quantities of the goldenglow or sunflower and thistle blossoms which they used most effectively in decorating the beautiful large community room of the country club. These gave the Rotary note of color, blue and gold and were massed in large baskets and placed on the piano mantel and about the room on pedestals and also formed two large Rotary wheels on the walls.______________________________________

1936W.H.S. News - The chapel program

was given by the seniors. Joe Shearon, as master of ceremonies. Chapel opened by the entire student body singing America. The scripture was read by Clemmie Miller. Following this Miss Pearl Bradfield led in prayer.

Everybody enjoyed a song, “I Can’t Escape From You” by LaVera Robberson. For an encore, she sang, “When I’m With You,” Mr. Wright introduced the officers from each class. Then Marilouise Johnson sang, ‘When Did You Leave Heaven?’ and for encore, “Did I Remember?”______________________________________

1946 The high school girls quartet,

consisting of Wanda Wilson, Tommie Sue Wilson, June Welch and Irene Johnson have arrived at the place in their development where they practice upon the stage. Their tones harmonize

and their music is sweet. Pick out an easy chair folks, and settle down to an hour’s entertainment. “There’s music in them thar voices.” Miss June Brower is in charge of their instruction.______________________________________

1956 The Wynnewood Music Club met

Monday evening in the home of Mrs. M. E. Robberson, Jr., for their first meeting of the fall season, with a covered dish dinner. Co - hostesses were Mrs. M. E. Robberson and Mrs. J. W. Tyree.

Mrs. C. M. Rosser, past president, introduced the incoming president, Mrs. Cullen Cofer, who congratulated the year book and program committees on their excellent work.

Twenty-six of the Club’s 28 members were present for the meeting. The Music Club meets the second and fourth Monday night in each month. ______________________________________

1966The Wynnewood Chamber of

Commerce will play host to Kerr-McGee dignitaries at a banquet slated for October 26th.. Many other dignitaries have been invited as guests of the Chamber of Commerce for this banquet.

Due to limited space for the banquet, there will be a few tickets for sale to the Chamber of Commerce membership, will then be for sale to the general public. If you are interested in attending this banquet, it is suggested that you contact the Chamber of Commerce office, as these tickets will be sold on a first come first serve basis.______________________________________

1986Mrs. Maxine Phillips, a distributor for

Mary Kay cosmetics, came to give make-overs to Odessa Jaggers, Lula Brewer, Eva Sue Dobbins, Ethel Ellenbaum,

Delia Stubblefield and Elaine Casteel. Mrs. Phillips is going to try and come to the home once a month to give facials or other make-over services to our female residents who have birthdays that month. The women really enjoyed the session and others are looking forward to their chance.______________________________________

1996Wynnewood’s EMS ambulance team,

under director Terry Noel, has recently expanded in much-needed personnel. Before the new volunteers joined Wynnewood’s team, the local service had to rely heavily on Pauls Valley’s unit for calls that Wynnewood EMS could not cover due to a shortage of manpower. “The addition of Steve Cash to our run schedule a few months ago really pulled us out,” Noel said, “especially where an EMT was needed on the weekends.”______________________________________

2006Helen Impson of Wynnewood was

among the former piano students of Mrs. W. A. Lemon who attended a ceremony in her honor in the Fine Arts Recital Building at Southeastern State University in Durant. The event formally established the Mrs. W. A. Lemon Endowed Scholarship at Southeastern.

Mrs. Impson studied with Mrs. Lemon from elementary school through high school. She completed her study with a solo recital of selections required by Mrs. Lemon.

Also - Coach Lee Ann Musgrove’s cross country runners competed at Davis on September 19, and her high school girls team came in second behind Dickson to win runnerup.

From a field of 51 girls, Cierra Patchell placed 2nd; Eva Carden 14th; Jessica Muniz 15th; Brittany Cottrell 25th; Brittany Blevins 33rd; Holly Cole 37th; Ashley Joseph 41st; and Tomaro Heath 49th.______________________________________

Wynnewood Well Represented At State Fair

Joseph and Jonah (right) represented the WW FFA and 4H in the Mini Hereford division at the Oklahoma State Fair on Sept. 22nd and 23. Joseph earned a 1st, a 2nd and a 5th while Jonah received a 2nd and a 3rd place with their cows.

Dylan Cope (above) also had a strong showing and garnered two 2nd place ribbons, a 4th place, a 5th place and a 6th place ribbon during the State Fair Competition. Great job to all our FFA and 4H kids and parents.
