Great start to 2018

The school community has had a very settled but productive start to the school year. Students have generally

returned refreshed and ready to be engaged in their learning. Our ‘Kick off with Reading’ books have been

distributed to all students and staff to engage in the pleasure of reading. These books are a gift to our school

community and have been generously funded by our amazing P&C. This year we are reading a multi-media text,

Shaun Tan’s Tales from Outer Suburbia. It's an illustrated collection of stories set in the Australian suburbs, about

how the fantastic keeps erupting into the most mundane daily lives. As part of the ‘Kick off with Reading’ initiative,

we are featuring an item each assembly called, ‘Everyone has a story’. Each assembly, a student and staff

member will share their own story with our school community.

Jacob Palmer-Quigg

I would like to extend, on behalf of our school community, our very best wishes to Jacob

Palmer-Quigg for a speedy and full recovery. Jacob is a much loved past student who was

involved in a single vehicle accident a couple of weeks ago. His younger siblings, Jessica

and Bailey, are both current students at our school, and our Student Representative

Council students have been fundraising in support of Jacob and his family. I would like to

thank our school community for their generosity in raising over one thousand dollars for the

Palmer-Quigg family during this difficult time. We will be holding a ‘thank you’ mufti day on

Thursday, March 29, in appreciation of our students’ efforts.

Parents and Citizens

We currently have a significant number of our P&C members leaving us, due to the fact that their children finished

Year 12 last year. I would like to encourage parents to consider joining the P&C as it gives you an opportunity to

have a strong ‘voice’ in our school community. It also allows you to hear, first hand, what is happening in our

school, and to ask questions directly of the Principal and Deputy Principal. The P&C allows you to meet other

parents, and to be heavily involved in the whole school decision-making process. Please come along to the

Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, March 27, at 6:30. Refreshments and nibbles will be provided on the

evening. Everyone is warmly welcome!

Habits of Mind

We are currently introducing our students to ‘The Habits of Mind’ to assist them in their learning. These habits are directly interlinked with our Positive Behaviour for Success concepts, and will be utilised during activities on our ‘Kick off with Reading’ text. The Habits of Mind are an identified set of 16 problem solving, life related skills, necessary to effectively operate in society and promote strategic reasoning, insightfulness, perseverance and creativity. The understanding and application of these 16 Habits of Mind serve to provide the individual with skills to work through real life situations that equip that person to respond using awareness (cues), thought, and intentional strategies in order to gain a positive outcome.

Welcome Back!

A big welcome back to all our families and friends at Moss Vale High School. 2018 is shaping up to be another big year and

we have well and truly hit the ground running already this term with assemblies, PBS lessons, excursions and sporting events.

I would also like to welcome our new enrolments who have started at Moss Vale High School this year. Our school has

continued to grow, and currently we are at approximately 690 students.

Year 7

I must make a special mention to the whole of Year 7 who have had an outstanding start to high school. Mrs Holmes and

myself have been most impressed by the way Year 7 have adjusted to high school and to see students already taking

opportunities offered at Moss Vale High School. We have seen students join the choir, join sporting teams and just get

involved in anything that is thrown their way. Well done Year 7!

2017 HSC results

Late in December, we received the HSC results for our 2017 cohort. I am extremely proud to say that Moss Vale High School

excelled and we were one of only two schools in the Highlands whose HSC rankings moved up. In fact, a whopping 100

positions!

The cohort achieved twelve merit list Band 6 results (results in the top 10% of the state) across a number of subjects.

The success of this year group flowed even further into the vocational pathways, with a large number of students moving

straight into apprenticeships/traineeships.

Drop off/Pick up reminder

Just a reminder to parents to please be mindful at drop off/pickup time. Please do not stop in the bus bay outside of the school

hall as this is

a) illegal, and

b) very dangerous

as this bus stop is the main interchange for all the schools in the area. Please drop/pick up students further down Young Road

or at the cul de sac at Woodville Road. I understand there are limited areas around the school but the safety of our students is

paramount.

School Photos

School photos are just around the corner, so get the hair looking good, the uniform pressed and practice your best smile in the

mirror! Please be aware that all students must be in normal uniform (not sport uniform) and comply with the Moss Vale High

School student guidelines that are set out clearly in the student handbook. Each student was handed a copy at the beginning

of the year. Of particular note is the section regarding the wearing of jewellery. A reminder that bulky jewellery, large bulky

earrings and nose rings are not to be worn. If you have any queries, please contact me before the photos to discuss.

NSW SCHOOL VACCINATION PROGRAM

Each year NSW Health works in partnership with schools to offer the

vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research

Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school vaccination program.

In 2018 the following vaccines will be offered:

Parent Information Kits that include an information sheet, consent form and privacy statement will be sent

home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to:

read all the information provided

complete the consent form, including signing their name next to the vaccine/s they would like

their child to receive

return the completed consent form to their child’s school

ensure that their child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Please note that students who commence HPV vaccination in school clinics in Year 7 but do not

complete the course during the school year may be offered catch-up doses at school in Year 8.

Students who have any HPV doses at their GP will be advised to complete the course with their GP.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school

Principal or phoning the school. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health

website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses

throughout the year where possible.

A Record of Vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at each clinic either as a physical

card or a text message sent to the mobile number recorded on the consent form (within 1 business day).

Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume

that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

This year the SRC has been involved with raising funds for the Palmer-Quigg family and the Valentine’s Day whole

school initiative #CelebrateLove.

Jacob Palmer-Quigg is a former student of Moss Vale High School who was involved in a horrific car accident. He

sustained serious injuries to his head and back and is in hospital with a long recovery ahead. The SRC has been raising

funds during Roll Call, collecting money from around the school to support Jacob and his family. We wish Jacob the

best during the tough weeks and months ahead.

On Valentine’s Day this year, the SRC decided to create a Field of Love in the DP area. We crafted hundreds of red and

pink love hearts and gave them to all students who wrote about something they love, messages to a loved one or what

love meant to them. We then collected the hearts and planted them in the DP area in the shape of an enormous love

heart. It was an excellent day and a really positive way to #CelebrateLove with the whole school community.

NEWS FROM THE CAPA VAULT

Our CAPA students have had an AMAZING start to 2018 . . . . . Joel Hinchcliffe had the honour of being selected to perform alongside Guy Sebastian at the Sydney Opera House for the Sydney Australia Day Celebrations. His performances were televised on national television.

Joel Hinchcliffe (vocals), Matthew Johnston (trumpet) and Samuel Johnston (alto saxophone) attended the ISE Performing Ensemble Camp at Nowra. Over two and a half days they learnt the 16 songs that will form the 2018 Showrun that will be performed to thousands of public school students over the next four terms.

Our newly formed Year 7 Vocal Ensemble, consisting of Charlotte Blake, Oscar Dunn-Luck, David Gillis, Samuel Johnston, Grace Jones, Asher Miller, Sara Rosas and Billie Rutherford, performed “Home” for our Year 7 2019 Information Night. They were accompanied by Thomas Gillis and Matthew Johnston. Our

Senior Vocal Ensemble, One Note Longer, also performed their ‘Let Me Love You/We Don’t Talk Anymore’ medley at the event. Javiera Diaz and Olivia Tumanow were selected to attend the prestigious Arts Unit’s Solo Vocal Camp in Sydney. Twenty Music students from Years 9-12 attended the first Meet the Music Concert at the Sydney Opera House. They were entertained by the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the Taikoz Drumming Ensemble.

Acacia Ashworth, Ethan Corby, Taylah Denford, Ewan Dimmock, Jordan Johansen, Caitlin Miller, Madeleine White and Amy Webb attended the three day Art of Composing Symposium in Sydney. Acacia, Taylah and Maddy were given the opportunity to perform their original compositions at the Open Mic Sessions and impressed both students and staff.

We have begun rehearsals for our School Musical, The Wiz, to be staged in June.

We also started rehearsing for our Term 1 CAPA Concert that will feature outstanding individual items and performances from our current 2018 Performing Ensembles: Stage Band, Junior Band, Brass Ensemble, Brioso Flute Ensemble, Choir, Vocal Rollers Vocal Ensemble, One Note Longer Vocal Ensemble, Simple Edition Vocal Ensemble and the Minor Details Vocal Ensemble.

Auditions continue to be held for a number of performing ensembles and the newly selected students will be announced at the CAPA concert in June.

In Week 8 our Band and Choir students will be combining with students from the local public and private high schools to perform in the inaugural Southern Highlands Schools Music Festival. Our students will be represented in the Combined Concert band, Stage band, String Orchestra and Choir. Parents, family and friends are invited to watch the resulting concert on Wednesday 21 March at 6:30pm in Clubbe Hall, Frensham. Private music lessons have begun with Edwina Carter (flute), Dan Freere (guitar) Michael Griffiths (drums), Julian Paviour (trumpet) and Kelesi Woodhouse (piano and vocals). We also have a new string teacher available, Maria Dunn, for any students interested in learning violin. Please see Mrs Johnston for more information regarding private music lessons at school.

Our CAPA staff are pumped and ready for 2018 and we look forward to what our talented CAPA students will continue to achieve this year.

The new school financial receipting system allows for funds

to be held for students to use at a later date. This is called

Fees in Advance.

These funds can be used for any student in the same family

and remain available from year to year.

Examples of when Fees in Advance may be used:

When an overpayment is made

When an excursion is cancelled

If an amount is paid to the school to be used for future

fees, excursions etc.

To pay for a student’s excursion or activity using Fees in

Advance, write “Fees in Advance” in the payment method

on the excursion note.

A receipt is still issued when utilising Fees in Advance to

show how payment was made.

Statements of account are mailed out regularly, and any

Fees in Advance will show up here.

If you have further questions regarding how Fees in Advance

works, please contact the school by phone on 4868 1717, by

the Front Office.

Thank you to all those families who have already paid their school fees.

This helps the school to purchase resources for classroom use required

at the start of the year.

Families are most welcome to pay off school fees during the year.

There is no restriction on how much or how often. However, please

consider the school’s Activity Week selection policy which states that

before a student can select an activity of $200 or more, all school fees

must be paid in full. Activity Week selection occurs in June.

On recent statements sent home some families may have noticed

“Unallocated Credit” appearing on their statement. This means there is

a credit amount which may be used to pay for any outstanding fees.

Please notify the Front Office with details of which items you wish the

credit to be applied to.

This credit may also be used to pay for excursions, sport bus or other

school activities. Just write “Credit” or “Fees in Advance” in the form of

payment section on the permission note.

Now is also a good time to ensure the school has your correct

address, telephone numbers and emergency contact numbers.

Please contact the school with any changes you may have. This can

be in person to the Front Office, via telephone, on the School App or

via email to [email protected].

If your child’s medical condition has changed, please ensure we have

full details, including if the medical condition no longer exists.

You are most welcome to check what details we currently have by

contacting the friendly staff at the Front Office.

On 23 February, Years 7-10 attended a writing

workshop hosted by Michelle Morgan. During

the day we had three sessions in the areas of

researching, writing and editing. In the first

session Michelle talked to us about her new

book and all of the research she had to do to

include history in her new novel. Michelle also

brought in different artefacts that she used to

help include the necessary history that she

wanted for the book ‘Flying through the clouds’.

During the second part we brainstormed ideas

constructing a story including using all the required

elements and then began writing a scene from the

story we brainstormed called ‘Washed Away’. Lastly,

we learnt about editing and what to look for in our

stories to improve our pieces of writing to make them

sound better.

Overall the day was a success and we have all

enjoyed having Michelle Morgan come and teach us

about the writing of stories so that we can use the

information and advise in our later writing.

Writing Workshops

Washed Away Eating dinner in my peaceful, warm, old willow tree, I ponder about my life, the way it began and the

way it is going. I don’t often think about these things and I wouldn’t have either if it wasn’t for my

two kids questioning me about Aunty Gertrude.

‘Hey Daddy what did Aunty Gertrude look like?’ ‘Is she a nice puffball?’ asked Georgina. I thought

about this for quite some time. How was I supposed to explain to these two little kids that their

Aunty was an evil puffball? Who resigned on her own in a willow tree in the centre of a lake and bred

cats for a living. Who brought on war with the humans for turning fellow puffballs into pillows, and

only wanted equality between the puffballs and humans. How was I supposed to explain it to them?

The smell of fairy bread dinner wafted through the air as I took another bite and I turned to the two

innocent faces staring at me with confusion. Your Aunty was a nice puffball, I expressed, and I mean

was a nice puffball? “Is she still a nice puffball?’ asked George shyly.

Well you see kids, I continued it all started after you Grandma and Grandpa dies in December last

year…..

Washed Away It’s funny how much you notice when you’re home alone.

For example, sitting here at my dining table, my heart is saddened by the sight of three empty chairs in

front of me. Once again, my emotions ruin a perfectly good evening. My eyes skim around the room and

stop at the two chairs to my left. Then they continue until they reach the lonely chair on the right, placed

a little further away. The smell of fairy bread wafts through the air, but suddenly I’m not hungry. I turn to

look at the clock, and realise I still have ages until my favourite program starts. I have nothing else to do

all evening so I may as well tell you my tragic (but mostly weird) life story. But first let me get some fairy

bread, I’ve suddenly found my appetite…

Ok, so, once upon a time, a little adorable puffball was born to two of the most loving and kind parents

that ever existed. That little puffball, was me (in case you can’t tell). Anyway, I can’t remember much

from my first few years of life, but what I can, I remember as being full of love and happiness. Then,

when I was about five hundred years old (about five years old in human years) my sister, Gertrude, was

born. Since the moment she opened her eyes she was creating chaos and mischief. By the age of two,

she had already burnt down our house and killed my rabbits on purpose. My parents said she was just

‘misunderstood’ but I knew better. But who listens to a kid? Then, on the night of my 700th birthday (7

human years) the most horrific and awful thing happened. One that changed my life. Forever. I was only

young, but I can still remember the sound of my parents screams and smell and sight of blood splattered

all over the kitchen floor. I remember running and slowly peaking around the door.

Standing. Shocked. Screaming.

I will never forget the night my sister murdered MY parents.

Walking a Tightrope

It is the big night, the promotion. This is my chance to show I am the greatest tightrope walker in the world.

The smell of peanuts fills the air and the loud noise of children and their parents talking makes me nervous.

My partner Tommy and I are up. We get to the top of the ladder and start our act. A thousand beady eyes

staring up at us. We walk to the speed of the music, 123, 123. We made it to the other side. Now we take the

chairs, we walk. Tommy and I get to the middle. He holds the chair while I try to climb onto it. I slip and fall

off the tightrope. Tommy tries to grab me but misses. It feels like I am falling forever. I hit the ground I can’t

feel my legs. I wake up in the hospital. Tommy by my side holding my hand and my mother and my brother

Hugo sitting at the end of my bed. “Tommy” I whisper. He looks up in surprise. “You’re awake” he says. I smile

and ask him what happened. “You don’t remember” he asks. “No” I reply. Then he told me everything. The

news is I have broken both of my legs and I may never be able to walk again.

This is where I have to rebuild my life.

This is a new start.

School photographs are scheduled to be taken by Advancedlife Photography on Friday 16 March 2018.

An envelope and flyer has been distributed. If possible it is Advancedlife’s preference that ordering be

completed online to reduce administration and potential security issues related to the return of cash and

envelopes on photo day to the photographers.

Orders for packages and sibling photographs can be placed securely online at www.advancedlife.com.au using

our school’s unique 9 digit Online Order Code (PFX DNF FTL). Online portrait and group package orders are due

by photography day.

All students are photographed in their year group (unless, not for publication ticked, on enrolment form) and

portrait photographs regardless of whether or not they are purchasing photographs.

Should you wish to purchase a sibling photograph online, the order must be placed no later than the day before

photography day. Sibling photographs will only be taken if an order has been placed.

Moss Vale High School Uniform

Moss Vale High School is a proud uniform wearing school. This is in accordance with the Department of

Education policy and the collaboration of the whole school community, that is, students, parents and

families (represented by the P & C) and staff.

Wearing school uniform presents a positive public image to the community of our school. School uniform

also fosters a safer school environment by enabling students to be easily identified. All students are

expected to wear full school uniform every day.

The uniform (clothing) supplier is Daylight Sportswear Pty Ltd.

Please do not purchase substitute clothing

A uniform shop is located on our school grounds near the Canteen.

Hours of operation are : Tuesday 8.30am - 11.30am and Thursday 1.00pm - 4.00pm during school terms.

The Work, Health and Safety requirement of the Department of Education, for all areas of the school, is that

students wear fully enclosed firm leather school shoes with a leather tongue.

This includes solid leather top and tongue (this is requirement even on mufti days).

The school colour for shoes is black, no coloured trims or logos.

Leather shoes have to be brought to school on sports days.

The uniform standard reinforces modesty including the use of minimal makeup and jewellery.

JEWELLERY

The wearing of jewellery (including piercing), neck chains and leather cords, bracelets etc is discouraged. If worn,

it must be unobtrusive.

“Due to OH & S requirements, Piercings that have the potential to cause injury are not to be worn at school (this

includes large studs and rings etc). Discreet studs can be worn.” For safety reasons, earrings must be either

small studs or small sleepers. Large ear jewellery, nose rings and other body studs are unacceptable.

Note, facial piercing of any kind is NOT part of the uniform code.

HAIR AND ACCESSORIES

For practical reasons and safety, hair is to be worn in a way that meets OH & S requirements. Headbands and

bandanas are not part of the uniform code. If wearing ribbons and scrunchies, these are to be plain navy blue

and unobtrusive.

The sun shone (for all three days – thank goodness), the water was sparkling and

everyone had a great time. Once again, a fantastic group of young adventurers were up

for all that the wonderful J Bay experience offers.

Once again the Jervis Bay Caravan Park played host with their excellent amenities. The pool was the happening place for many games of Marc Polo, classic catches and relaxing in the spa. In the afternoon there was stand up paddle boarding in the river which saw the true colour of Mr Kumar displayed with lots of splashing of the unsuspecting girls. Ms Cripps drew the short straw and endured an hour of constant complaining and high jinx from the boys group to the point where she bailed and swam back to shore.

Snorkelling was great fun on the second day with lots to see – stingrays, bronze

whalers, dolphins and many fish. The boys group got the best of the conditions and

there was plenty of hot chips and great fresh rolls (thanks to Husky Bakery) for lunch.

All birthdays must be celebrated with cake and ice cream cake was requested by the birthday girl, Allie Kracht.

Mr Donaldson, Mr Kumar, Ms Cripps and Mr Dubois want to thank all the J Bayers who

were such a delight to be around, who whole heartedly got into the activities and just

had a cracking good time.

Looking forward to 2018 to being bigger and better than ever.

On my return from our activity week adventure I was physically tired but my soul was rested. I felt so privileged to have been invited to assist my fellow colleagues accompany our students and some of their family members camping and trout fishing in the Snowy Mountains. Highlights;

Must be true, the length was marked on his rod! Mrs Kemp is to be congratulated for her thorough organisation, which meant we were all well fed, very comfortable and safe. Thank you Mr Miller for making sure we were all well informed and being an amazing role model and mentor for our young campers. On behalf of the staff and students of Moss Vale High School, I also extend gratitude to the family members who supported us on this trip. Activity Week 2017 with the students of the support

unit was a fun filled bonanza, kicking off with day

one that started with an early morning train trip to

Bowral, we then headed to the new empire cinemas

for a special Moss Vale High School screening of

the film 'Wonder' that was followed by a short walk

through Bowral and a picnic lunch at one of the

parks close by. Our students enjoyed their time out

and about on a cruisy day out of school. The 2nd

day involved a fun filled adventure down the moun-

tain to visit the animals at Shoalhaven Zoo in Nowra.

We got to see a number of different cuddly and not

so cuddly animals. We also got the chance to catch

a show and pat a Wombat and a small size Boa

Constrictor that we are sure had its eye on some of

the teachers. Whilst the weather was sizzling our

students made the most of it and had a good time

walking to each exhibit. On our last day we headed to Bundanoon for a scenic bushwalk at Morton National Park, we made

our way through to the viewing platform at Echo Point and tested out the acoustics to hear the echoes of our students we then

tested our balance doing the Lovers Walking Track. When we got back we had a well deserved sausage sizzled cooked by

none other then the BBQ masterchef Mr. Vandervoort and to end we made our way back to much cooler temperatures at

school. All in all it was a nice turn out to activity week 2017. Looking forward to what will come in 2018.

Day one, we all jumped on a bus and headed up

to Appin for Laser Skirmish in the bush. The laser

skirmish group divided us up and took us on

many different challenges. The challenges

included hiding behind trees and climbing

around rocks, defending our base. Overall, even

though it was extremely hot, it was a cracker of

a day.

Day two involved jumping on the bus and heading to Campbelltown where we watched Ferdinand and

enjoyed the air conditioning of the cinemas. We also had lunch and enjoyed shopping at Macarthur Square.

Day three, we all hopped back on the bus and headed down the mountain. We finally arrived and started to

control the action at Jamberoo. After many rides and water features later, we left at 5pm to head back

home. The day was hot and there were lots of people including other schools but everyone enjoyed the day!

We recommend this activity for students in Years 7-10 or students who do not want to spend loads of

money and travel far from home.

As we transition into the new year the Moss Vale High School House Cup Championship begins again with each house

having a clean slate. All students and staff have been divided evenly into four houses, Belmore, Moreton, Carrington and

Gibraltar. At Moss Vale High School, students have an incredibly strong sense of pride, integrity and honour when

representing themselves as well as their House.

Our 2018 House Championship kicked off in Term 1 with the election of four new house captains from the Year 11 Year

group who would lead their teams into sporting and academic battle throughout the year. The Gibraltar Blues, who

dominated the competition last year, have continued their winning streak following this year’s swimming carnival placing

1st, Moreton coming in 2nd, Carrington 3rd and Belmore 4th.

The House Cup is awarded annually at the end of Term 4 to the House that has accumulated the most points over that

calendar year. The focus is on three areas of school life: Academic, Social and Sporting. As such, students can earn

points towards the House Cup from their participation in one or more of the following areas:

Participation points in the THREE SPORTS carnivals (swimming, athletics, cross country)

Points accumulated in FACULTY challenges

Points accumulated through VIVO rewards where at the end of each term, data will be collected and points

awarded based upon the house standings.

Gundungurra Shield

Each of these events is worth 40 points for 1st place, 30 points for 2nd, 20 points for 3rd and 10 points for 4th.

Faculty challenges will be commencing soon so be sure to listen out to the bulletin to see how you can be easily earning

your house more points. We also have the Cross-Country carnival at the end of term, get your colours ready!
