SWUTC Project Objectives• Develop a master plan for the Transportation A&M

Transportation Institute (TTI) Sediment and Erosion Control Laboratory (SEC Lab) in Bryan, Texas.

• Enhance the SEC Lab through the addition of low impact development (LID)/green infrastructure (GI) training and demonstration facilities.

• Develop a design that allows the site to simultaneously function as a research facility and provide professional development.


The Texas A&M Transportation Institute’s Sediment and Erosion Control Laboratory is a 19-acre, full scale,

indoor/outdoor facility that provides the transportation industry with a uniform, timely, non-biased, scientifically sound performance evaluation

and research program for products, materials, devices and techniques used for stormwater quality

improvement, sediment and erosion control, and sustainable roadside development.

Project ConceptsThe concepts of slow, spread, soak represents LID/GI strategies while look, link, learn stands for the hands-on learning experience.

• Slow - reduce the stormwater runoff volume and velocity

• Spread - redistribute/reuse stormwater

• Soak - maximize infiltration

• Look - provide LID/GI signage boards throughout facilities

• Link - connect hands-on model to practical experience

• Learn – provide understanding of LID/GI processes and applications through experiential learning

Water Wheel

The inspiration of the water wheels

is from the old Chinese irrigation

tool which can move water from low

elevation to high elevation without

mechanical power .


Water Screen

The water screen utilized the water fog created

by the pumped water from the lake, used for

presentation, educational video, and fun.


Phytoremediation Botanical Gardens


Water Pergola

The water pergola is a place where the stuff and

students have their lunch or rest. The water falling on

one side of the pergola is collected from the

infiltration trench on the near west berm.


Living Wall

The living wall is a place with fun as well as educational

meaning. Students learn the knowledge of the elements, the

building process and the maintenance process of the living

wall, while they can also write and draw anything they like on

the water writing fabric to feel the interesting usage of water.
