Home Life Newsletter 2017-18 Fiscal year was the most difficult year at Home Life since I took this job in 2005. We lost 4 beauful souls. Brian Bonney, Libby Nicholas, John Luther and Janet Andrews. All but John were with Home Life for at least 30 years. This was hard on all of us, especially the roommates and staff who worked so closely with them. This along with reduced number of clients in supported living, state budget cuts and expenses related to starng a new vocaonal program, caused a net loss of almost $200,000 at year end. Fortunately we have reserves for difficult mes, but we have to turn things around and get those reserves built back up. I am happy to report that June, July and August of 2018 both showed a posive net income thanks to filled vacancies and many cost cung measures we were forced to implement. I am confident that 2018-19 we will be back on track. We have a new board president as of June, his name is John Hobbs. John has served on the board since December of 2012 as our Treasurer. Karen Schulz is now our Treasurer, Wayne Lystra is our Vice President and Sierra Rawson our Secretary. The board is currently working to schedule a strategic planning meeng with the intenon of geng more involved with fundraising. One of my goals for the coming year is to do fundraising to remodel the Teater House. We have plans to remodel the side by side bathrooms such that one will be greatly enlarged to be accessible and the second bathroom to be reduced to a half bath. Also, we plan to convert the garage into an office so that what is currently the office will be available to support another individual. We are currently geng esmates for the work and will soon be wring grants and doing other fundraising acvies. On a different note, our Human Resources Director, Teresa Jaynes, has leſt Home Life to work for the State DD program. She was with us for nine wonderful years and we miss her already. 20 Years of Service

Recently one of our Program Managers, Tim

Richey reached 20 years here at Home Life. To

celebrate this milestone in his life he had the

Home Life logo tattooed on his leg. This is what

he had to say: “I started Home Life as just a job

and it did not take too long before I came to

truly enjoy it and found a great personal

satisfaction in both what I was doing and how I

was positively affecting the lives of others. After

20 years I have come to see this as a calling and

a passion and I believe Home Life not only does

the job it says it does, but it follows it’s true

statement infecting positivity in the lives of

people daily, and I wanted to represent that. I

had given my time to the

company as well as all of the

company has given to the

individuals that it serves.”

Thank you, Tim, for all of

your years of hard work and

dedication! We appreciate

all that you do!

The ladies at Coho had a wonderful time enjoying the holiday season. Lea and Beverly just returned from their trips to Disneyland and were excited to tell everyone all of the magical details. Lea is looking for a new job this coming year. Bonnie is looking forward to the snowshoeing season, and having some time with her peers. They decorated the house to reflect how much they love the holiday season.

We are planning our upcoming Christmas party and everyone is excited for the opportunity to celebrate together. Each person is planning special gifts for their family and friends, which will include pictures that we had done from a local photographer this year. The pictures turned out beautiful and will make great keepsakes for years to

come. We hope everyone has a great holiday and we look forward to a new year.

Wintertime is coming and there’s a chill is in the air. All of the Mumford House clients are looking forward to the upcoming holidays filled with good food and friends. There have been several room changes as we make some moves to take better advantage of much needed space. New

decorations have gone up in the room helping to highlight the unique personality of the new residents in them. We plan to

go to storybook land and the Zoo lights up in Portland. Of course, there will be trips to the local light shows around Corvallis

during the holidays, enjoying the array of colors and Christmas music on the radio.

The ladies are looking forward to celebrating Christmas and the holidays with their families. Mary just celebrated her 57th birthday as well as Barb celebrating her 70th! Mary is looking forward to a visit with her father and brother. Linda continues her sewing and looks forward to her new job this next year.

The Robinson house had a great summer! Residents traveled to Winston OR, to the Wildlife Safari where we saw elephants, bears and emus roaming the park! Shortly after returning, many headed off to various camping destinations ranging from Mt. Hood to the Northern Oregon coast. After campfires and stories, it was time to ride the Vortex at the Oregon State fair in Salem. Fall came fast and it was time for The 28th annual Great Pumpkin run. School resumed and so did Impact For life! Volunteers provided enthusiastic support while attending ARC activities such as Tai Chi, and Linn Benton's Adaptive Movements class. We are looking forward to a joyful winter season full of laughter and good health!

Andy loves to go for long van rides and enjoys his bi-weekly trip to Shari’s restaurant, where he gets his favorite; coconut cream pie and Pepsi! Andy loves to laugh; once he is laughing, it is not long

before everyone else is. Allen’s favorite activities include watching football with his Mom and eating! Allen’s at his happiest when he’s surrounded by his family and while he’s eating good food. Ask Allen anything about the weather in Oregon and he is sure to know, he’s our very own weather buff. Mike is a super social

person; he spends lots of time with his many friends and likes to take the train to see his family. He loves to get outside and see new things, play Mario on his DS, and he is always

happy to share a fun story from his life.

Supported Living is always busy! We kicked the year off with a day trip to Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon and spent a summer day in Newport visiting the beach and dining at Mo's. When we are not at Highland Bowl on Wednesday nights, we like to check out the local cuisine found around Corvallis and Albany. Of course, we are looking forward to the Holidays. To start our Holiday Season, we will join our peers for a morning adventure to Storybook Land. As the season goes on, we will be in Portland to check out the famous Zoo Lights and of course our Annual Holiday Party.

Supported Living Plus has had a very fun and exciting 2018! We had so many people participate in the Summer Olympics and fall sports. Many staff volunteered for the Home Life Great Pumpkin Run and were there to cheer on Parker as he competed in the 10k race.

Recently, our group attended the annual Storybook Land in Albany and enjoyed a nice lunch at Papa’s Pizza afterwards. As Christmas approaches, we are excited and looking forward to an opportunity to take some cards to Brookdale Assisted Living Facility in Albany. Also for an opportunity to enjoy a meal and watch a Christmas movie. Staff and individuals have been helping come up with lots of ideas on what our theme for the 2019 Sprout Film Festival video will be and we think we have a choice! However, the only way you can know for sure is to attend our annual event in March!

Crosby and Stefan had a wonderful summer this year, and we are transitioning into fall/winter. They have been staying busy with Impact for Life and their many volunteer opportunities in the community. Stefan and Crosby recently visited the Oregon Zoo and really enjoyed themselves! Stefan continues to enjoy weekend trips with his

parents, hiking, trips to the bookstores, and Arc dances. Crosby is going to Special O again, has been enjoying jamming out on his guitar, playing basketball, bowling, and going to all the Beaver games! We have been transitioning into the cooler

weather by going pumpkin picking and making apple pie. Teater House is looking forward to what the coming months will bring!

The last few months have been exciting around the Voc program. In September, a team from our staff attended an amazing training that helped guide our vision of what the Voc program can be. We have

been working hard to implement new strategies and structure to ensure our programs lead to fulfilling community jobs that employees love!

At this time, we are supporting clients in jobs at more than 10 locations in Linn and Benton Counties and provide skills training to 10+ groups a week. As we’ve worked to increase our community partnerships for jobs and skills training we have been so appreciative of the support and opportunities our community provides.

A last shameless plug for our clients: if your business needs any part-time positions filled don’t hesitate to call us. We can match job-seeking clients with various skill sets to your job and help provide training and support as they learn the job.

We have been happy to welcome Dan Hazleton to Woods house this year. Dan is very busy with work and volunteering and recently competed the ARC job-training program. Dan has been involved in track and bowling with Special Olympics this year, and enjoys bowling night and swimming classes at Osborn Aquatic Center.

Sheena has been enjoying bowling and going to Activity Night with Supported Living clients. She was able to see elephants at the Wildlife Safari this summer, and is looking forward to going again next year. Dan and Sheena dressed up and

took part in the Great Pumpkin Run this fall. Woods House is looking forward to taking part in more upcoming holiday activities.

The 28th annual Great Pumpkin Run was a

success! We raised over $14,000! More

than 400 runners came out to the Benton

County Fairgrounds on a sunny Sunday

morning. We had around 90 volunteers

setting up the course, taking payments,

handing out chips, selling shirts, passing out water, and

cheering on the runners. There was music, beer and mead for

everyone to enjoy after the run. Signs along the runner’s route

included funny sayings, words of encouragement, and

information about Home Life. We also had a very fun kids

course this year, many kids ran through over and over again!

No Dinx had “Happy” the VW bus, at the event to sell shirts

out of and it was the perfect backdrop for all the selfies!

Thanks again to everyone who came out and participated and

a HUGE thank you to our sponsors for their incredible and

generous support. Please be sure to visit them and thank

them for continuing to be an advocate for those with

developmental disabilities.

Brian Bonney passed away on March 25, 2018. Brian lived at Mumford House for 36 years. He enjoyed working as part of the landscaping crew for Cornerstone Associ-ates and was very active in Special Olym-pics. At Mumford, he built strong relation-ships, including ones that date back to his own childhood, as with Sue, whose family

had play dates on a regular basis. Brian’s mother, Thelma Bonney and Martha Mumford started educating kids in their own homes and pushed for Corvallis to allow DD children into public schools in 1968. Brian attended public schools with many of his friends who later became housemates. He was a Special Olympics athlete, participating in track and field in the spring and bowling in the fall. During these events, he won several medals and encouraged his good friend Jeff when he was participating.

Brian’s close relationship with Jeff has stood the test of time; they were an inseparable duo. Brian had a gentle soul and a deep wisdom towards life. It was an honor to serve Brian. He will forever be part of the Mumford House and Home Life family.

Janet Karen Andrews, age 69, passed away on February 6th, 2018 at Good Sa-maritan Hospital in Corvallis.

Janet was born June 1st, 1948 in Kansas City, Missouri, a daughter of Olt and Eliza-beth Andrews. Janet was a beloved family member of Home Life for over 35 years. With Home Life’s supports, she enjoyed many life-enriching activities.

Janet was an avid bowler, loved swimming, John Wayne movies, having coffee with friends and the love of her life, Mike Hale. She and Mike could be seen almost daily, walking around town, saying hello to anyone she came across. Every-one Janet met she called a friend. Her endearing smile and sense of humor brought joy to all who crossed her path. She will be missed by many.
