PRINCIPAL’S REPORT Book Week Celebrations Week 8 approaches, and for us at Ironbark Ridge this will be the time we celebrate the wonders of reading. Join us for our combined Grandparents Day and Book Character Parade on Wednesday 11th September:

The Ironbark Way… Creating culture is an organic process in society. As time goes on we find that improvements and efficiencies develop, inequities are discovered and campaigned against, and progress for the individual and for groups is achieved. We should see this as growth in our community… in society. If we do not allow (and embrace) this growth we will become an unwilling participant in the journey who is pushed from behind and forced to walk forward into the unknown, often with one hand over our eyes and the other held in front to protect us from

anxiety-produced and oft-imaginary dangers. Ridgy the Frog, ‘the hero’ of our difficult, often confusing and unsettling learning journey at Ironbark Ridge encourages us to embrace the opportunities and challenges… to have a go… to add “yet” to the “I can’t” and “I won’t” statements… to confidently step forward. As I mentioned in last fortnight’s newsletter, the purpose of culture is to help us to make wise choices, to set positive and appropriate goals for ourselves. The culture we live in nominates the ‘heroes’ we admire and try to emulate with our own lives. This is why we are working so hard to develop a positive school culture with explicit stories about what learners do to be successful, and narratives to explain how to stay safe and act respectfully and

responsibly… and heroes like Ridgy to follow. Our learners, these young citizens, need the pathway well marked… The Ironbark Way.

Dads… double-take! Next Thursday 29th August is our annual opportunity for our Ironbarker Dads to join forces and operate both our Fathers’ Day stall and the Hotdog Day cooking and serving... all on the same day! Please make sure:

Self-Reliance (another Successful Learner Habit) A Successful Learner will be in the habit of being Self-Reliant, using their initiative and solving many problems themselves. They are able to carry out instructions from a variety of sources. A Self-Reliant learner is able to use classroom routines and prior experience to assist others and be independently organised without any prompts. A learner well-versed in using SELF-RELIANCE tries at least three different approaches before seeking assistance from their teacher/leader (this can include watching others for modelling and asking a peer for guidance/advice)... "Try 3 before asking me!" many of our teachers will say. Independent learners have begun to develop the important habit of SELF-RELIANCE. Belief in one’s own ability to face the challenge and complete a task is known as ‘self-efficacy’ (“I think I can!”), and is crucial in the journey of a successful learner. This is why one of our three school Strategic Directions remains creating confident, successful, inspired learners. Review – School Programs At Ironbark Ridge we annually review the focus and impact of our teaching and learning programs - curriculum. At present we are examining our extra-curricular school programs including Sport, Languages, Band, Performance groups and Wellbeing, focusing on the impact these activities have on learning across the six Key Learning Areas. Our intention is always to streamline and reduce the negative effects these ‘extra’ activities have on time and focus, whilst magnifying the positive benefits they have. Where evidence of positive impact is not clear, or negative effect on core competencies is apparent, we are looking to clear the way for more effective practices and programs. Recent community feedback Although 140 responses to our short survey may seem a small number from 980 students and their families, in our experience this is a large sample of parental opinions. We will continue to request small amounts of your time in the future to answer short (less than 2-minute) surveys and questions. Our current school Extra-Curricular Programs review requires specific input from our community and as such this will form our next focus. From Education Week Open Day Top things we are working hard at: What we need to improve next:

Most ‘valued’ in our children’s education:

Classroom ‘Libraries’ In the aim of getting more books into our classrooms and ultimately more reading time spent by our students (research clearly shows ‘time on text’ is directly related to overall literacy outcomes for students across their schooling journey) we have begun the purchase of a second ‘set’ of Library books. These books will be ‘borrowed’ each term by the class and transported back to classrooms where they will be used for a range of purposeful and enjoyable reading activities – some teacher-directed and others student-directed. the class library will be ‘returned’ to the school Library, and a new set of books chosen by the students of the class. We would like to purchase special furniture to store and display these class library books to ensure ease of use for our students. We are also approaching the Ironbark Ridge community to support us with donations of good condition second-hand (or new) books to add to the CL collection. A special marked collection box will be outside the Library each afternoon from next week to accept any book donations so please contribute to the choice of books for our students to be choosing for the Classroom Library. Communication platforms: simplification The sentral Parent Portal will begin to take the place of our main online communication tool. More functions will be slowly introduced – you may have noticed these Newsletters are easy to access through the menu in the Portal. The school Facebook page will continue to be used as it is visually effective and extremely user-friendly for updates and celebrations… however it is a public forum. The other school apps including School Star will be phased out this term. A Fragility Epidemic? - Parenting for Resilience A thoughtful idea and article about how risk-averse parenting is actually setting lour children up for failure and poor resilience. A well-worth read... https://is-tracking-link-api-prod.appspot.com/api/v1/click/5367529721036800/4796932394319872 Chess Champs Our Ironbark Ridge A chess team is this afternoon playing in the Western Sydney finals of the NSWJunior Chess League primary schools competition after they were named Blacktown area Champions. They have played extremely well so far in 2019 but are up against some very good opposition from Beecroft PS. Congratulations to the team for the success so far. Yours in fun and learning, Nick Thomson Principal

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’ REPORT Happy Father’s Day The staff at Ironbark Ridge would like to wish all our fathers a very happy Father’s Day on Sunday 1st September. We hope that you have a day of celebration and the opportunity to create precious memories that live in your heart forever. Watching Our Learners Grow One of the most rewarding aspects of the Deputy Principal position is the opportunity to see outstanding work across the school. This fortnight we have had a visit from Kindy students who wrote letters telling us about their trip to the farm. Starting Kindy in 2020 Can you believe it is time to begin our local Kindergarten enrolments for 2020? If you have a little person who is planning to come to our dynamic school next year, please pop along and grab an enrolment form from the office. Our friendly staff will be happy to answer any questions and help you to secure that highly sought after Kindergarten position. Parent Information Evening will be held on Tuesday 10th September at 6 pm. This evening will give you an overview of school readiness and the Best Start process. This evening is for parents only, so please arrange a babysitter and come along to meet our staff, see some Kindergarten rooms and answer any questions you may have. The Lost Property Nightmare No matter how hard we work at returning the truckload of lost property, it always seems to remerge. We regularly remind students to pop hats and jumpers into their bags when they are not being worn. Children being children will often forget. Whilst we aim to return labelled or tagged items to rightful owners, at times some items of clothing go to the wrong household. If you note that your child has the wrong hat or jumper when he/she gets home, would you kindly return the following day. It is important to ensure that even if you have a tag please write your child’s name in big, clear letters to ensure it is easily identified. This may speed up the process of return as children can easily see if it belongs to them. Absentee Reminder As a school, we need to follow the Department of Education’s policy and procedures. We wish to remind you that when your child is absent from school, it is a requirement that the absence be covered with a full explanation. The explanation must have a reason for their absence. If a child is late to school, it is a requirement that the parent sign the child in at the office. Reasons such as being late due to traffic or slept in will be recorded as an ‘unjustified absence’. Your child will be handed a late slip to give to their teacher. This indicates the child has been signed in. It is the same procedure if a parent wishes to take their child early from school. Individual attendance rates are reviewed by Home School Liaison Officers, including lateness to school. It is very important that we meet the Department’s recording requirements. Thank you to all of those parents who promptly advise the school.

Student Health and Wellbeing At Ironbark Ridge, student wellbeing is always our highest priority. We would like to remind all parents and carers that there are students who attend our school who are at risk of an anaphylactic reaction should they come into contact with nuts. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is rapid in onset and requires immediate emergency treatment. We are NOT a “nut free” school; however, we ask that you consider the health and safety of these students and refrain from sending food to school that contains nuts. This includes peanut butter or Nutella sandwiches, nut bars and other lunch box snacks, along with cakes for birthday celebrations. Finally, please remind your child that at school we do not share food. Your assistance in keeping all our students safe is greatly appreciated. Jersey Day On Friday 30th August we will join with many in our community in recognising Jersey Day. Students may wear a jersey to school, which may prompt the important discussion around raising awareness of organ donation. You may like to visit the website. https://www.jerseyday.com.au/ Please note that students in 1CB, 1J and 1R will need to wear their normal sports uniform for their excursion to the city next Friday. ADMINISTRATION As our Parent Information Evening is coming up on Tuesday 10th September from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, we are taking enrolments for kindergarten students for 2020. Enrolment forms are available on the school website. Hard copies are available from the school office. Please check our website for the required documentation to support your child’s enrolment. Unfortunately, enrolments cannot be accepted if the documentation is incomplete. For kindergarten siblings of current students, please keep in mind that our catchment area has changed significantly due to the opening of the new North Kellyville Public School this year. You may find that your address no longer falls into our catchment area. If your address is no longer within our catchment area, you will need to fill out a Non-Local Application which can also be found on our website under “About Our School”, then “Enrolments”. You can check your address on the School Finder system: https://education.nsw.gov.au/school-finder We look forward to welcoming your child to Ironbark Ridge Public School in 2020. Stage 2 Snippets WOW! How time flies when we’re having fun. Term 3 is always a crazy time of year and over the next 5 weeks Stage 2 will be very busy engaging in exciting learning experiences and activities. Ironbark’s got talent Exciting news for one of our lovely Year 4 students Cleo, who became a NSW State Champion in Gymnastics last Saturday. She placed 1st in Bars, 4th on Vault and placed first overall in Level 6 Division 1. This is such an amazing achievement and we are so proud to call Cleo an Ironbarker! Well done Cleo! Science During science this term, we have been learning all about the connections between the Sun, Earth and Moon. Students have enjoyed experimenting with their shadows and studying how they change throughout the day. This unit has definitely sparked some interesting and engaging conversations within the classroom.

Even Ridgy’s little friend decided to join us during an outdoor science activity.

Have you got your costumes ready? The Book Character Parade is approaching fast! We love this time of the year and can’t wait to see all our students dress up as their favourite book characters in week 8 (Tuesday September 11th). I know that all the Stage 2 teachers are beyond excited to share their book character costumes! Walkabout Wildlife Park Stage 2’s excursion to Walkabout Wildlife Park is fast approaching. Dates for this excursion are as followed: 3A, 3C and 3K – Monday Week 9, September 16th 4E, 4I and 3S – Monday Week 10, September 23rd 4/3B, 4H and 4P – Friday Week 10, September 27th A couple of reminders for the coming weeks:

- If your child is missing their jumper or hat please encourage them to check lost property. We have a large number of jumpers and hats hanging out in lost property waiting to come home.

- Friday 30th August is Jersey Day. Students are encouraged to wear their sports jersey on the day with their normal sports shorts.

- Reading Eggs, Prodigy and Typing Tournament are fantastic resources that allow children to engage in reading, maths and practise their typing skills through fun and exciting activities. We encourage students to keep utilising these online resources on a weekly basis.

Page 11: Home - Ironbark Ridge Public School - Newsletter 2019...– Be Skilled Be Fit – Yrs 3-6 6 th – NO PSSA 9 th – Be Skilled Be Fit – Yrs 3 – 6 10 th – Parent Information Evening,

Stage 3 Snippets Halfway through term 3 and things are busy and bustling. Students are moving full steam ahead with their learning and the development of their learner habits. Goal setting and self-reliance have been the focus and Stage 3 students have been thinking about their responsibilities as a learner and how they can more independently plan for and achieve their personal goals.

The Combined Ridges Choir had a rehearsal Monday 19th hosted here at Ironbark. All involved worked hard singing and refining their delivery of the songs in preparation for the Ridges Festival coming up on Monday 2nd September. Stage 3 dance group, as well as the school’s other dance groups, will be showcasing their talent. To ensure you don’t miss out you can purchase your tickets ASAP! Ticket forms can be found on the school website.

On Thursday 22nd August we had many of our Stage 3 students represent Ironbark at the Ridges Athletics Carnival. Our athletes all displayed determination, persistence and sportsmanship throughout the day. We are very proud of their achievements and the way they promote the values of Ironbark Ridge. Our book character parade day is fast approaching (11th September) and we are having exciting conversations about who we may dress up as on the day. Teachers are busy getting their costumes sorted and ready for the Ironbark Ridge catwalk, so we hope you are too. We look forward to seeing the creative interpretations of well-loved characters found in the pages of books we enjoy. Thank you for your continued support of our students and teachers. Stage 3 Teachers Stage 3 Enrichment Program Rani, Alex, Amodh, Anmol, Zarwa, Isabel, Prateek and Tamoghna from Stage 3 had the opportunity to attend an enrichment day at Longneck Lagoon Environmental Education Centre at Maraylya on Monday 12th August. The Centre is operated by the NSW Department of Education and offers various curriculum aligned programs. The Stage 3 Treasure Trackers Enrichment Program teaches students how to use a compass and GPS, then work in small teams to locate and solve a series of puzzling treasures. Students were engaged in the various orienteering and GPS tracking activities and worked well collaboratively with each other and students from another local public school. We all learned something new whilst at Longneck Lagoon!
