What is Hyperhidrosis?Hyperhidrosis is a medical condition in which a person sweats excessively and unpredictably. People with hyperhidrosis may sweat even when the temperature is cool or they are at rest. This disease can disrupt a person’s ability to perform normal, daily activities, which make it physically, emotionally, and psychologically challenging. Hyperhidrosis effects about 2 - 3% of the population.

What is Iontophoresis?Iontophoresis is a drug-free, safe and effective therapy for hyperhidrosis which consists of introducing a treatment area such as the hands or feet to water which has a mild electrical current. This can easily be done in the comfort of the patient’s home under the instruction of a care provider.

Is it Safe? Yes, iontophoresis is considered to be a very safe treatment option, especially when compared to alternative therapies. The most common side effect of iontophoresis is dry skin. If the skin becomes excessively dry, treatments may be reduced or spaced further apart.

What is Treatment Like? A typical treatment regimen begins with about ten daily treatments to quickly bring the sweating under control. Once a satisfactory level of normal perspiration is achieved, treatments can transition to a maintenance phase of once or twice a week.

The Aquex system is programmable, so patients can save settings for various treatment areas. It emits a variable pulsed current for maximum comfort, and is completely adjustable so patients can increase or decrease the current as needed.

Some patients will notice a slight tingling sensation, while others notice nothing at all. Petroleum jelly may be applied to cuticles, small cuts or scrapes prior to treatment to prevent any discomfort in these areas.

Home Iontophoresis for Kaiser Permanente Members

The Aquex home iontophoresis system uses ordinary tap water and a very mild and safe electrical current to bring excessive perspiration under control.

Every Aquex is equipped with a digital, programmable controller, a carrying case which doubles as two treatment trays, two large electrodes, two treatment towels, and two cables.

If underarm treatment is required, Aquex may be prescribed with an Axillary Kit, which provides two axillary pads and two small electrodes, in addition to the standard set.
