IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005

Few topics are as HOT as the rule book changes now going into place. If you have followed any of the inter-net chat about this topic you would assume that IDPA is in the process of self destruction. As many of you know I have no official posi-tion within IDPA, as I stepped down from my position as IDPA Vice President and Board of Directors member two years ago. As such my views are totally my own, with NO official capacity stated.

Regardless of all the screaming and crying by a group of internet talkers, I am convinced that IDPA will survive and this storm will pass rather quickly. For some time there have been many IDPA members that have called for changes in the Rule Book…well they got them. I feel that some changes were called for, and some offered were not worth the hassle. For the most part, IDPA worked pretty well as it existed prior to the Rule Book changes of 2005.

To me, the key issues of change fall into four general areas. First is the change in SSP concerning the weight limit. If no

changes had been made, I think IDPA would have survived just fine. But to Bill Wilson’s credit, he looked at this issue as a means of keeping the most active Division we have in a pure state where special purpose guns (primarily built by a couple of companies to support pro shooters) are not in the spirit of the Principles of IDPA. As such, we as IDPA shooters can live just fine with them. Will some shooters be angry and leave IDPA to shoot USPSA where their stock pistols can play…..yes. I wish them luck in their endeav-ors.

The holster/magazine/speed loader car-rier topic seems to be the most explosive among the screamers. Again, as the past holster nazi, I know how difficult it can be to get this area to work for everyone. At the first meeting when we formed IDPA, the founders spent more time arguing and trying to come up with a holster policy than any other single topic. Bill Wilson tells me that he felt the approved holster list had become unworkable. I don’t doubt him on this point. His fix is a systemt hat allows club and match directors to define what they think a proper holster should be. When I hear all these folks

Page 7: Home - International Defensive Pistol Association · 05/12/2018  · I did my research and found out that KSC Brand makes the best Glock replicas on the market for Airsoft. Basi-cally

scream about their holster not being legal, I fear that it is non issue, as within four or five years the holster rule will just go away. I saw this in IPSC. I hope it does not repeat itself here. Bill assures me that he will correct this if the slide begins to go the same for IDPA. Overall, I would have rather left things the way they were than to take a chance that the holster and related equipment guidelines may decay in the future. We will see what happens. By the way, if your $20 holster is no longer legal, and you decide to leave IDPA because of this, maybe you can find a cheaper shooting sport to be active in…..good luck.

The new revolver division – ESR, is a means of getting IDPA back in line with the fact that we have pretty much forced those that use standard non moon clip wheelguns out of the game. In afterthought, nearly every one of the original IDPA founders agreed that allowing moon clip revolvers in IDPA was a mistake. But we let them in and this new ESR Division is an excellent way of solving the problem.

Should the .45 GAP have been allowed in CDP? I don’t know…and don’t really care. I don’t expect to ever own one, and see little virtue in the .45 GAP. If I had my way, light rail guns would be legal in IDPA….but, not lights. If you have a light rail gun I would let you use it, however I don’t think lights mounted on them is a good idea. Placing lights on pistols under stress…or removing them can lead to holes in your hand. Plus, I don’t want to see light mounted pistol lead to an equipment race. I happen to be a real believer in Crimson Trace laser grips, and have them on the pistols I carry. But, if there is a chance that allowing them could lead to a ‘need to have them to remain competitive’, I feel that $250 to $300 added cost is a real problem.

Overall, I don’t have any major problem with the changes…..except that we could have gotten along without them. My real concern about the uproar over the new rule book changes is that people have been so focused on these issues

that many of the small match related rules and clarifications of rules have largely been missed and skipped over. So, to that degree IDPA has shot themselves in the foot….little toe more accurately. The way I see it, about ten percent of IDPA members will follow IDPA without question, seventy five percent of the members don’t give a rat’s a**, and fifteen percent of them will bitch about everything IDPA does. Look at IDPA and ask yourself, ‘what do I want to get out of IDPA competition?’ Is it just an opportunity to meet with my friends and like minded souls to enjoy a day on the range while testing my skills with the handgun I have chosen for self defense, or is it to excel at competition and be a top level IDPA shooter? Once you have identified what you want from IDPA, then you can decide whether the rule changes make it possible or impossible for you to continue being part of IDPA. Think of IDPA as a pair of shoes - are they comfortable or do they pinch your toes. Maybe you should try another pair to see if they feel better and you are more comfortable in them. Whether it be USPSA, or even Cowboy SASS competition, another may be more of a comfort zone for you. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and making you shoot IDPA. Make up your own mind based upon what works best for you….don’t just do what I say or what any of the “I’m leaving IDPA" whiners tell you. Decide what you want out of IDPA, and what you want to get in return. Then make up your own mind. My guess is that most folks will get over this storm of controversy and continue to enjoy themselves doing what they enjoy best. Good Shooting.

IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005

I have been looking for more and more in home training devices since getting serious about match shooting IDPA. I like to practice in my home and since an in home range is not in my future I have been searching for something to satisfy the need to shot on my down time.

I have been reading more and more on how Airsoft was an excellent tool being used for all kinds of training. Recent articles in SWAT magazine about these Airsoft guns have mentioned that many police departments are now using these for force on force training. I figured I would give it a try since I don’t get to the range very often and sometimes I would like to practice more.

I did my research and found out that KSC Brand makes the best Glock replicas on the market for Airsoft. Basi-cally these Airsoft pistols shoot a 6MM plastic .20 grain BB. The pistol uses a green gas which is loaded into the mags with the plastic BB’s. I purchased the Pistol, Extra Mag, 3750 BB’s and two cans of green gas for about $215 delivered.

One of the important things to look for in Airsoft is if the trademarks have been removed from the gun. Most gun companies don’t want to see these perfect replicas on the market because they have not licensed their trade-marks to the Airsoft makers. If you want the most realistic replica then you want to make sure your purchasing an Airsoft with full trademarks. When you are ordering you should ask about this up front.

I spent sometime looking around, reading the Airsoft boards and calling around. I purchased an Airsoft KSC Glock G34 from Precision Airsoft out of Washington. I spoke with Kevin and it was shipped ground and took about six day to get. They can not ship the gas for the guns via express or Air service. I suggest you only order one of these from a company you can get on the telephone as many of the dealers are pay pal – email only types. Almost any thing you can get in or for a real firearm has been replicated for the Airsoft market so it is likely they will have a replica of your pistol. I have seen everything from Glock to custom maker 1911’s and even M4’s with aimpoint M2 and KAC RAS. Not to mention all manner of MP5 and G36 Rifle.

Impressions

Out of the box I was stunned that the Airsoft pistol was identical to the real pistol. Even down to the metal Se-rial number band on the receiver and the octagon mark on the barrel. To test the exactness of this pistol I at-tached my M3 light on the rail and it fit just like it does on my carry real Glock. All markings and features were present including the extended slide release and trigger safety. The slide has a blow back action and cycles just like the real thing with a sharp bang on each shot. The sights on the gun are the same as the G34 and adjustable they just don’t seem to leave any detail out.

Time came to get down to business so I setup two IDPA targets purchased from the club and loaded up the mags and holstered the pistol. Shooting two to the body and one to the head drills in my living room was a blast. The Gas powered gun has no problem shooting the BB through the card board target and into another card board trap box I placed behind it. I went on and set up some no shoot targets and practiced prone and from behind my couch then practiced all manners of cover positions. Continued on page 10

Airsoft, Continued from page 9

Soon I began to tackle the practice of the dreaded tac reloads which is why I purchased the second magazine with my initial order. I fired three on a target then tac reloaded then three on another target and so on. As time went on I got a bit better at it. I hope this will help me get over that problem of instinctively dropping my mags. Shooting while retreating I managed to trip over my cat but he is no worst for wear.

Breaking down the pistol was done in the same manner as with a real Glock, the reciever looks almost identi-cal to a real Glock and I think it weighs the same. The slide is light because it’s made from plastic and racking could be stiffer but the recoil spring is not very strong so it’s very easy to rack. Again blow back of the slide on each shot makes the pistol kick. I tested the accuracy and it is dead on, I carved out the black diamonds on the orange shooting spots I later placed on card board boxes. Any unused card board box makes an instant target for this pistol. Place a T-shirt inside and you have got a good BB trap. You will have so much fun with this that you have to improvise or purchase a trap else these little plastic balls will be all over your carpet.

All in all I think that this is a great fun item to have in your collection and might just help you develop some more skill; it is certainly a nice thing to own when it’s raining out. And it’s a lot safer than shooting at phone books with a silencer on your pistol. If you’re interested in purchasing I was able to get a Ten percent discount from Kevin and I think they will extend that to the members of the club if you ask. The site address is http://www.precisionairsoft.com/ and the telephone number is 509-535-0655.

The ‘Other IDPA’What other IDPA?

USPSA Production class, that’s what. Never heard of it? Well that’s because you haven’t shot USPSA recently. Here’s the deal. Production class uses IDPA guns and gear, same as SSP and ESP except, you can wear as many magazines as you want and everything is scored as USPSA minor. That’s right! No more ‘only 2 magazines’ on your body. If you need more, you better be wearing ‘em. Why? Because most USPSA stages are somewhere around 28 to 32 rounds, or greater. But it’s not the total round count that counts; it’s the stage arrays that count. What does that mean? It means that stage arrays shouldn’t, not can’t, have more than 8 rounds per array. That sounds just like a normal IPDA stage, doesn’t it? Yes, except that this repeats 3 to 4 times per USPSA stage.

Yes, that’s right. And here comes the best part, you don’t get penalized for shooting it ‘IDPA’ style… Ex-ample, starting in Box A, engage T1-T4 from Port A. What? You can’t use ports or boxes in IDPA! True, but you can imagine that Port A is a simple window that extends to infinity both horizontally and vertically. So you choose one side or the other, and slice the pie. After all you are using cover and can only see one threat at once. Ok, so then you have to move to Box B. The stage description says, ‘engage T5-T8 as they become visible’ That’s even better! Use tactical sequence or tactical priority. If the threats are the same distance to the shooter, give ‘em the 1-1-1-2-1-1-1. If they are more than 2 yards apart, give them the 2-2-2-2, near to far, on the move.

Now you have arrived at Barricade B. The stage description says T9-T11 strong hand only, and T12-T14 weak hand only. Is that IDPA? Or what? Of course, it’s the perfect practice venue for the ‘Real IDPA’ Ok, but what about reloads, and concealment. You can shoot USPSA from concealment, as there is no rule against it. You can reload from cover, performing either a tactical or retained reload, again, as there is no rule against it. Darting in and out of cover for reloads seemingly never stops to amuse the USPSA shooters. Why would anyone do that?

What’s different between the two venues? Everything, except, for shooting quickly and accurately! Even though USPSA means DVC, Accuracy, Power, Speed, it really means Speed, Speed, Speed. So here’s the hot tip. You want to improve your IDPA skills, and scores, then get over to your nearest USPSA match, and shoot Production, or Limited 10 Class (CDP with 10 round mags). You do not have to be classified, or be a member of USPSA, to shoot.

I have to admit there is one small, almost insignificant problem with all of this. It becomes somewhat difficult to tell the difference between IDPA and USPSA when you are shooting fast and having fun. So please, remember your concealment and to use cover.

TIME FOR A NEW CLASS?

A quick show of hands: How many IDPA members would like to be able to be competitive with a “real world” revolver (i.e., one that doesn’t load via moon clips)? How about being able to use standard pressure .38 Special loads in major matches (good luck unless you reload)? These are a couple of questions that come to mind for many shooters in the IDPA’s Stock Service Revolver class.

Years ago, my cousin (who has carried a sidearm for over four decades) said to me after noticing a Govern-ment Model on my hip, “That’ll get you killed.” “What?” I replied. “That automatic. Carry a revolver. Six for sure.”The advice stuck with me. I admit to carrying an auto from time to time, but my “always” gun is still a re-volver.

I started shooting IDPA in 1999 with a plain vanilla Model 10. I’d still like to use that revolver in major matches but alas, I don’t. It’s just too much of a hassle to find a factory load that makes “power.” And no, I don’t cotton to paying roughly $13 per box for plus-p loads only to burn them up at matches. I do not reload and besides, why should I be required to “cook up” a hot rod load when shooters of other calibers don’t have to?

On top of the ammo disparity, have you ever tried using carry speedloaders against a match opponent doing “Miculek Toss” reloads with their full moon clips? Picture a Wile Coyote and Roadrunner foot race.

Here’s a suggestion: Why not start a “traditional” revolver class? Within said class, shooters would use realistically charged carry guns (be honest, everyone knows moon clip guns are used strictly for their speed reloading advantage versus the clock) and standard pressure factory ammo to compete on a much more even basis.

My informal questioning of other revolver shooters leads me to believe that the IDPA, due to its arbitrary SSR regulations, is relegating an entire class of shooters to “back of the bus” status. In particular, the type of shoot-ers (entry level/ real world-carry wheel gunners) that may not now participate in our sport/ major matches due to the hardware disparity within the Stock Service Revolver class.

In short, the challenge of trying to compete with a “traditional” revolver (such as a Model 10 or 15) against a “moon” gun is comparable to a stock 1911 shooter facing off against a hi-cap, red dot-topped “race” gun. Wasn’t preventing such situations one of the key reasons for starting the IDPA in the first place?

14 IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005

Wisconsin 2004 State Championship Match by Jim Williams, A07409

The fourth annual Wisconsin State Championship was held August 7-8 at LaCrosse, WI. We had a fantastic turnout of shooters from all over the nation, an outstanding course of fire, and plenty of opportunities for cama-raderie and fun both on and off the course.

Match volunteers set up the stages on Thursday. Match Director Steve Dickow, Chief Safety Officer Ronny Casper and Area Coordinator Jim Williams gave the Course of Fire final clearance Friday morning, and then our tri-state Safety Officer cadre (WI, IL, and MN folks volunteered to “red shirt” for us) had their chance to shoot, then to debrief afterward to make sure we had the CoF ready for the morning. It was a long day, but we finished up in time to make it back to the hospitality reception at an area hotel where we had a chance to meet & greet the bulk of the shooters over pizza and (healthful) beverages.

This year we went to a 2-day format for the first time. Saturday’s shoot consisted of eight stages, six scenarios and two movement-type standards. Feedback from the shooters was positive, rating the stages as “fun”, “chal-lenging”, and “thoughtful”. We tried to include lots of variety in the types of problems shooters had to face. There were very positive comments on the “Shoot House” stage, and a lot of good-natured grumbling about “Waylaid at the Wayside”, where shooters had to finish the CoF using a gun “dropped” by one of the bad guys. We included lots of movement—both targets and shooters—and a lot of variety in target types and presentation. Oh, and lots of bullets, too. With a fairly high round count to start with, and most of the stages being Vickers Count, shooters had the opportunity to send massive amounts of lead downrange.

Competitors were split into two Saturday flights—morning and afternoon—which kept squad size manageable. All squads were able to complete the full 8 stages in under 4 hours. To keep folks from getting bored while their flight was waiting on Saturday, we offered a couple of interesting side matches: a fast & furious 3-gun match, and the Air Marshall’s Qualification Course. Both side matches were very popular.

The match banquet was held Saturday evening. A local caterer brought in an enormous quantity of delicious steaks with all the trimmings. The variety & quantity of food was such that even the vegetarians in attendance had a feast.

Steve and Ronny presided over the prize table as we ate dessert, and what a prize table it was. Match sponsors donated thousands of dollars worth of shooting accessories, clothing, ammunition, knives, and training opportu-nities. I lost track of the number of guns given away, but it had to be more than a dozen. As usual, I didn’t win one.

We finished the match Sunday morning with a challenging set of 3 “Standard” courses of fire. The last round was fired by 11:30, and our outstanding scorekeeping crew had the results posted by noon. Awards were passed out shortly thereafter with all due ceremony. We officially closed the match by 1:30 pm, giving folks a solid 8 hours of daylight for the drive home. If you’ve ever driven the hundreds of miles home in the dark exhausted from a match, you’ll appreciate the luxury of doing it before sundown.

The 2004 match finished up a resounding success. Every year we’re seeing more shooters from the far corners of the USA. We like to think it’s because folks are eager to take a crack at our high quality Courses of Fire. But the good food, tasty Wisconsin beer, and rich prize table don’t hurt, I suppose.

The 2005 Match will again be held at LaCrosse July 30-31, with a limit of 175 shooters. You can download a registration form online through our website, www.wisconsinidpa.com. See you in July, and don’t forget to bring plenty of ammo. Pictures on page 11

IDPA Practice Session Improvement

By D.R. Walker A07815

Have you found yourself in a slump either at practice or at a match?

Ever racked your brain trying to come up with a way to improve your shooting technique without spending a significant amount of time or money? We all know there is no magic potion to drink or top secret classified documents to read that will improve your shooting. All it takes is good ol’ fashioned practice. As the saying goes “practice makes perfect”. How-ever, that in itself still isn’t quite enough. You have to know how to practice correctly, because “perfect practice makes perfect”. Quality training sessions, not the quantity of rounds down range is what will ensure that practice time is close to perfect. Okay, I know what you are thinking….all that sounds great but how can I have quality practice sessions that will help me to improve?

Well after much many, many practice sessions trying to fit a “ten pound cat into a five pound bag” Sam Conway has de-veloped an easily understood comprehensive approach on how to practice….correctly.

A few months ago I was fortunate enough to be given a copy of “The Shooter’s Approach to Practice, A Practical Guide” that was written by Sam. The guide is easy to read and written and has three easy to follow sections. The book is about the size of an IDPA rule book, making it convenient to keep in your shooting bag and for reference on the range.

The first section is all about techniques. It includes photo illustrations designed to provide the visual reference needed for correct application of each skill. Section two focuses on drills for skill building emphasizing the technique, marksmanship at a distance and increasing speed while retaining accuracy. In this section you will find drills completely defined includ-ing number of targets, distance, round count, with time limits. Also included is a thorough description of how to correctly use the drill to improve your performance. Most of the drills presented use from one to four targets allowing for ease of set up maximizing training time.

The last section of the book is a visual reference of over 30 drills with a layout of how to set the drill up, number of targets and distance etc, and a table to chart your progress. This is the section you would most likely turn to out on the practice range. One of the benefits of the book is that all of the distances can be adjusted to suit you. If the drill calls for you to do the drill at 10 yards and you want to push the targets out to 15 yards, you can safely and quickly do so.

Who is Sam Conway? Sam has an extensive background in firearms training and competitive shooting. He is a Grand Master in the USPSA Limited Division, Master in L-10 and Open. Sam has a Master class rating in IDPA, and he is a High Master in NRA PPC. Sam was an original member of the US Army Action Pistol Team in the United States Army Marksmanship Unit. He has been training law enforcement officers on the state and federal level for over 10 years. Cur-rently, Sam is a lead firearms instructor for the Department of Homeland Security at the Federal Law Enforcement Train-ing Center in Glynco, GA.

How much for all this? An affordable price of $19.95 plus $3.95 S&H. Very cost effective for a guide on how to im-prove the four things that we all want to be better at, draw stroke, reloads, target transitions and movement.

A Reactive IDPA TargetWouldn’t it be nice for some matches to have reactive IDPA targets? I’m not talking about Pepper Poppers here, but a target that falls only with a hit to a down-zero area.

The RRT, Reed Reactive Target named by the late John Luering, may God rest his soul, is such a target. (Photo courtesy of Donald Murray, Mid Carolina IDPA.)

The RRT holds a standard cardboard IDPA target in front of two steel plates. One steel plate is behind the square down-zero area of the cardboard target. Another steel plate is behind the round down-zero area in the center of the cardboard target. Thus when a bullet passes through either down-zero area, it subsequently hits a steel plate and knocks the RRT down. This makes the target reactive and great fun to shoot. Conversely, when a bullet goes through the down-one or down-three areas of the cardboard target, it misses the steel plates and the RRT remains standing. An RRT is scored like a Pepper Popper. If it remains standing a miss is scored, and if the target falls it is scored as neutralized.

The addition of RRTs to an IDPA match breaks the regularity of shooting twice and moving on. An RRT soaks up all down-one and down-three hits without notice, and can make an IDPA competitor focus on getting down-zero hits. RRTs are particularly well suited for wearing a T-shirt or ball cap, since the cardboard target does not have to be scored. For some reason, the addition of a T-shirt makes the RRT even more of a chal-lenge to shoot well.

Of course the concept of steel plates behind a cardboard target has been around for some time. However the RRT design and construction details make this target a good match for the requirements of IDPA. The steel plates of the RRT are angled down at a 45-degree angle. When a bullet hits a steel plate it is deflected down into the ground and not back to the shooter. This allows the RRT to be shot from very close distances, as in IDPA. During development the prototype was shot 75 times in a row from 3 feet with .45ACP, .38 Special,

and 9mm without any splatter getting back to the shooter. Additionally, the prototype did not spit back using a shotgun with birdshot or buckshot. Each club will have to evalu-ate the risk and decide what a safe shooting distance is for this target based on it’s local construction materials, construction quality and other factors they deem important.

The picture of the prototype above, shown without a cardboard target, denotes the major component parts of an RRT. The IDPA rule changes announced in January of 2005 created unprecedented controversy within the ranks of the In-ternational Defensive Pistol Association. Bill Wilson listened to the feedback, dialogued extensively with shooters and match sponsors, and “changed the changes” based on the result-ing input. The magazine hired Massad Ayoob, an avid IDPA shooter who is handgun editor of GUNS magazine, law en-forcement editor of AMERICAN HANDGUNNER, and asso-ciate editor of COMBAT HANDGUNS and GUNS & WEAP-ONS FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT to interview Bill with a view toward explaining how the final rule changes came about.

Ayoob: Bill, what did the issues regarding the rule changes really boil down to?

Wilson: There were really three big ones. First, the holster regulations. Second, the weight limit in SSP (Stock Service Pistol). Third, the two separate revolver divisions.

Ayoob: Before we get into the details of those, can you tell the members why the second set of changes was made toward the end of January, 2005?

Wilson: This organization is about the shooters. We care about how they feel, and we listen to what they have to say.

There was a lot of yelling and a lot of name-calling that came my way, but there was also some con-structive criticism and some really heartfelt statements and suggestions. We took all of that into account. As a result, we wound up making “changes to the changes.”

Ayoob: Who’s “we”?

Wilson: Well, there are myself and John Sayle, the two directors who are mostly involved in making the day-to-day decisions surrounding IDPA these days. But I also went back to all the old directors and felt them out on each of the issues. Ken Hackathorn, for example, is behind me on all of the rule changes. I spoke with most of the past and present national match directors, and several of the area coordinators and CSOs. There’s a core group of about twenty people that I consulted as advisors on these matters, in addition to reading all the letters and e-mails that came in on the various issues.

Ayoob: I get a sense that when you went back and changed some of the new rules, you were going against your own feelings on some elements.

Wilson: That’s true. In deference to the will of the membership and the shooters, we backed off on some of the equipment requirements. For instance, we softened up on the criteria for speedloader carriers and full moon clip carriers. I’m not particularly happy with what we ended up with – I think it’s too lenient – but I’ve bowed to the will of the active members on that. I personally don’t agree with where we ended up on the cartridge capacity for ESR (Enhanced Service Revolver), but it seemed to be the best thing to do based on the needs and wants of the active competitors.

Basically, we held the line on the changes in the holster regulations and the weight limit in SSP. Almost everything else has been moderated from the way the rules were first altered.

Ayoob: Then let’s start on the details. One place where you didn’t back down on the rule changes was in the area of approved holsters.

Wilson: That’s correct. I got a flood of angry messages telling me to lighten up, that IDPA is a game. We all realize it’s a game, a competition. We do use a timer. We do keep score. We’re trying to marry two things that can’t be married: training and tactics, with competition.

At the same time, to keep any practicality whatsoever, we at least need to keep it to the gear that people will be carrying on the street. We don’t want to have people at an IDPA match strap on their pink guns and op-tics in roto-holsters and say, “Oh, yeah, I’d carry this on the street.”

Page 22: Home - International Defensive Pistol Association · 05/12/2018  · I did my research and found out that KSC Brand makes the best Glock replicas on the market for Airsoft. Basi-cally

22 IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005

We felt we had to crack down on the holsters. You have to draw a line somewhere, because everyone was crossing the imaginary line we had before. You almost have to overcorrect, because people will be pushing the limit constantly. I thought it better to take the flak now.

We were seeing stuff out there that no one would carry on the street, but it was technically legal. Sev-eral manufacturers submitted a design, got IDPA approval, then modified the design and produced a different holster under the name we had approved. For example, the Uncle Mike’s holster. It did not have the offset device when Ken Hackathorn originally approved it. It now has a three-quarter inch offset.

Our biggest mistake at IDPA headquarters was not dealing with that sort of thing sooner, and I’ll take the blame on that.

Ayoob: You stuck to the changes in the holster regs, but you modified the changes on the magazine pouches.

Wilson: Yes. As we finalized it, two inches of the magazine has to be down in the pouch, and the front portion of those two inches of the magazine has to be covered by the pouch.

The original draft of the new rules had said the magazine had to be straight up and down, 90 degrees to the ground. We were trying to get away from the radically angled IPSC type magazine carriers that are not con-cealable or practical for street carry. We changed the rule modification to allow ten degrees either way. This allows for the slight angle that you sometimes see on practical concealment magazine pouches.

IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005 23

Ayoob: What about the SSP weight limit?

Wilson: Again, it was a case of a line needing to be drawn. There was an equipment race starting, and we saw the handwriting on the wall.

The weight limit was aimed at new guns that were developed after IDPA and USPSA Production shooting became popular, and seemed to have been developed solely to give a competitor an advantage in winning those events. We saw that as being at cross-purposes to the fundamental IDPA tenet, which was relevant competition with the kind of guns people actually carried for self-defense.

We drew the line at the Smith & Wesson Model 5906. It’s very popular and it was around long be-fore either IDPA or USPSA Production came into being. It’s an all-steel 9mm, and it’s about the heaviest gun people are likely to carry concealed.

When we started IDPA, the SSP was the most popular class from the beginning. The people who came to the dance first and made it the most popular were guys with Glocks and Berettas, and original configuration SIGs with aluminum frames. A gun that weighs three quarters of a pound more than a loaded Glock 17 has an advantage on recoil control, period.

The new weight limit allows the Model 5906. We know a lot of cops carry them and a lot of private citizens bought them for personal protection. We drew the line there intentionally to keep out guns that were brought out later, solely to win matches like these, not to be suitable for personal concealed carry or law en-forcement use.

Ayoob: Let’s talk about splitting revolvers between SSR and the new ESR division.

Wilson: The simple fact was, if you had two shooters of equal skill in SSR (Stock Service Revolver), and one of them had a .38 or .357 with speedloaders and the other had a revolver firing auto pistol cartridges with moon clips, the one with the moon clips would win. It had become a situation where equipment was winning over skill. You know how many people went out and bought a Model 625, or a Model 610, just so they could win IDPA with a gun they never intended to actually carry. We wanted to bring it back to the revolvers that people actually did carry, and to take the equipment race element out of the Stock Service Revolver class.

The first draft of the modification had the Enhanced Service Revolver class using up to eight rounds in the cylinder. In the past, as you know, we allowed seven- and eight-shot revolvers so long as they were only loaded with six rounds. If you shot with moon clips at all, you would shoot in ESR.

The overwhelming majority of the input was against the higher capacity revolvers. My feeling was, and still is, that if you’re going to put up with the bulk of an N-frame revolver, an eight-shot .357 with 125 grain Magnum hollow points gives you a more efficient fighting handgun than a six-shot 10mm or .45 ACP. I found it ironic that people who thought it was great to buy a six-shot moon clip .45 that they weren’t going to use for any other purpose but to beat shooters with ordinary service revolvers and speedloaders, all of a sudden felt taken advantage of when it looked as if someone else with an eight-shot Smith & Wesson Model 627 might be able to have an advantage over them in competition.

24 IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005

The reason we decided to go back to a limit of six cartridges in the gun was that so many of the seri-ous IDPA competitors already had the .45 ACP and 10mm and .40 S&W revolvers, and were already using them for things like hunting or home defense or even, in a few cases, concealed carry. The eight-shot N-frame .38/.357, except for the new lightweight Scandium snubby with express sights, has always come with a longer barrel than would have been IDPA legal, and was used mainly for ICORE competition and bowling pin shoots.

The feeling of a lot of the advisors was that allowing the eight-shot moon clip N-frame would create the kind of equipment race we were trying to get away from, while the moon-clip .45s had become a fact of life in IDPA, and the guns were already there and in competition. That was the will of the majority who weighed in, and I bowed to it.

Ayoob: You also adjusted the modifications on the moon clip and speedloader carriers.

Wilson: Yes. The finalized rules allow the Shoot-the-Moon carrier, for example, because it’s sturdy and prac-tical. We are not, however, allowing the carriers that hold the moon clip by only one or two rounds.

One thing that came out of all this feedback was that a lot of our members who actually do carry re-volvers on the street carry their spare ammo in the pockets of their vests or their jackets. So we are now very explicitly allowing this. It doesn’t have to be carried “above the waist” as some had interpreted the previous rules. If the moon clip or speedloader is in the pocket of the vest or jacket or coat, and is concealed from view, it’s allowed.

Ayoob: There seems to have been a lot of anger and acrimony in some of the comments that the original rule changes triggered. How do you feel about that?

Wilson: A little hurt, I suppose, and a little angry. The good news is, most of the people understood why the rule changes had to be undertaken.

Look, I could make a lot more money if I devoted the time I spent on IDPA to my core business, Wilson Combat. But competitive shooting, whether you call it “practical shooting” or “combat shooting” or whatever, has been good to me, and I wanted to give something back.

I think the popularity of IDPA has shown that we did the right thing in creating the International Defen-sive Pistol Association. People want to be able to test their defensive skills with the guns they carry to protect themselves, and their families, and in the case of many of our members, the public.

I and the other founders of IDPA knew that the equipment race and the win-at-all-costs mentality were the things that had ruined other practical shooting disciplines as venues for genuine skill development and relevant skill testing. IDPA is about real-world carry guns and accessories, and using them in ways that are relevant to how that equipment is likely to be used in that real world. We saw the equipment race developing with things like the “IDPA competition holsters” and “IDPA competition ammo carriers” and “IDPA compe-tition guns,” and we had to do something to bring it back to the core reasons why people shoot IDPA in the first place. That was the motive for all the rule changes in the first draft. It’s still the reason for the IDPA rule changes that we finally locked in.

Ayoob: It’s interesting that all the controversy has centered around the equipment rules, and not any of the other rule changes that were announced at the same time.

IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005 25

Wilson: Most of the rest of the rule changes had to do with officiating. No one seems to have had any com-plaint with them.

Ayoob: Any final comments for the IDPA shooters?

Wilson: The changes were made for the benefit of the shooters, the members. We want them to be able to com-pete effectively with the guns they actually carry for personal defense, the guns they actually keep at home to protect their families. Yes, we know it’s a sport – I think we know that better than anyone else, to tell you the truth – but we want it to be a relevant sport. We want all the members to have a fair contest and a level playing field, and not let it turn into a test of who has the biggest budget.

The rule changes didn’t benefit me, or any of the people who make IDPA happen, in any way. They were made to benefit the people who join IDPA and come to the matches to test and improve their skills. And I think the benefits of those rule changes will become apparent once they are implemented over the next few months.

Accommodations for Deaf and Hard of Hearing IDPA Members

By Al J. Noll 19001A

There are 26 million deaf and hard of hearing Americans, so it should be no surprise that some of them are IDPA members. You may find yourself wondering what to do if you have a person in your area who is deaf and wants to participate in IDPA activities. (In this article, “deaf” refers to both deaf and hard of hearing.)

The most important thing to know is that deaf individuals are absolutely no different from you. They may have difficulty hearing, but this in no way undermines their abilities. In fact, deaf people have driver’s licenses and pilot’s licenses, and they have owned guns for as long as the rest of America has. Sure, communicating with a deaf person may be a bit different from what you’re used to, but it should not pose an obstacle. First, ask the deaf person what the preferred mode of communication is. Within the deaf community, communication meth-ods vary widely. Some prefer to speak and lipread with hearing people, while others prefer to write back and forth. Gestures and signs may also be used. The bottom line is to ask the deaf person which communication mode to use.

Based on my experience in participating in a number of shooting matches, I have found that range officers and staff have been very willing to make accommodations. Following are some recommendations for accommodat-ing deaf IDPA members in an IDPA match: Continued on page 29

Deaf and Hard of Hearing Shooters, Continued from page 26

1. Provide a hardcopy of the COF (Course of Fire) that the Range Officer/Safety Officer reads aloud to shooters. The deaf shooter needs to know whether it is a Vickers Count or Limited Vickers Count, whether or not he can drop empty magazines to the ground, how many rounds must be hit on each target, if he must find a cover for reloading, and so on.

2. Do not ask the deaf shooter to be first or second in line to shoot. Allow him to observe the first two or three people before calling his name. That way, he can observe what the expectations are for each COF.

3. When the deaf shooter is at the firing line, the Range Officer should use a thumbs-up signal to indicate the go-ahead for loading. The shooter will then give a thumbs-up to indicate readiness.

4. The Range Officer should stay a bit closer behind the deaf shooter’s back with the timer. Tap on the deaf person’s shoulder immediately when the timer sets off. This way, the deaf person will only lose .5 or 1 second in each stage. This affects the overall time results, but that is acceptable – communication is a higher priority to the deaf person.

5. It may be a good idea to stay within arm’s reach of the deaf shooter for quick communication. In case of a cease-fire or muzzle alert, tap on the deaf person’s head, and he will stop shooting even if it is a muzzle alert.

If there is anything else the deaf shooter should be aware about for the particular COF, let him know immediately. Also review the above recommendations with the deaf shooter to make sure he is in agree-ment.

Al Noll, an IDPA member who is deaf, developed these recommendations. Having completed several classes in addition to advanced firearms training, Noll has participated in a number of IDPA, GSSF and USPSA matches. He is also an NRA-certified pistol instructor, teaching deaf and hard of hearing people about safety in using guns and foundations of shooting. Noll keeps his skills sharp by participating in weekly matches (Practical Action League) at a local range, Dutchess County Pistol Association, with some long-time IDPA members and champions, such as Austin Bentley, Don Redl, Todd Redl, Dwight Wang, Don Carter, Tom Voughn and Steve Waite. His website is at www.geocities.com/alnoll/safety.

Thoughts of an IDPA Shooter

By: Jay Calvert

What do you want to get out of this shooting sport that we are all so fond of? The answer to this question is different for everyone. It ranges from friendships, acquiring shooting skills, being part of clubs, all the way to being a leader at major matches. I started shooting IDPA about five years ago and have been down this hilly road and have learned a lot about myself, the shooting sports, and others. Most importantly, I’m still learning, as it never ends.

My first match was at the only club in Iowa at the time. We shot two stages for about thirty rounds in that match. I came with my equipment, but opted to watch. Everyone was friendly and answer-ing any questions that I had. Finally halfway through the match they talked me into shooting the match. A gentleman named Jim E took me into the clubhouse and got me situated with my equip-ment. All I had for ammunition was hydra shocks for my .45ACP and he had offered to loan me some other loads but I declined, as this is what I used for defensive purposes. Needless to say Jim is a good friend and an excellent competitor still today.

In 2001 I started the second IDPA club in Iowa and opened up the door for more shooters to expe-rience IDPA and it’s principles. I put on a couple of IDPA seminars and still do it today, trying to get out the word about IDPA. This club was short lived though as it went by the way side after a year due to uncontrollable circumstances. A lot of good things came out of this though. Two of the three clubs that Iowa has now were started and still run by shooters who had shot their first match-es at the club I had a hand in starting. Besides this, more shooters started traveling to other clubs to shoot matches and IDPA started growing in Iowa. Not to mention all the friends that were made in the process of shooting matches there.

I started out classified as a marksman in 2000, the next year I had hit expert, and now I’ve hit my master’s card. I owe this to hard practice and the advice from shooters in all of the action shoot-ing sports. I don’t know it all, and I’m still learning every time I go to practice, dry fire, or shoot a match. But now it’s my turn to help the new shooters with advice, equipment, help match direc-tors run a match, or do whatever is needed. It is this evolution that will help keep IDPA going and getting stronger. It can’t be left to one person or a small group of people, as this will cause burnout and the end of clubs.

The biggest thing that stands out in my mind is the attitude of new shooters to the sport. They shoot the match and appear to have fun, but when the scores come out they are disappointed. You know, don’t even worry about where you finish, just go out and do your best. You’re only at com-petition with yourself. Don’t worry about the timer or other shooters. The more you do it, the

Page 31: Home - International Defensive Pistol Association · 05/12/2018  · I did my research and found out that KSC Brand makes the best Glock replicas on the market for Airsoft. Basi-cally

IDPA Tactical Journal First Quarter 2005 31

better you will get. I use to see a lot of new shooters come to a match, get what I feel is intimi-dated and not come back. This isn’t right. Next time you see a new shooter at a club match, make him or her feel welcome. Tell them to not worry about their time or overall score. Just shoot the match and be comfortable. Nobody out there is going to make a fool out of anyone. Also offer to help them any way you can.

Next in line is practice. A lot of people have a misconception that you need to send a lot of rounds down range to get good, but that’s not necessarily true. I spend a lot of time dry firing. Many top shooters and most if not all firearm instructors use and teach dry firing as a training aid. This is an excellent way to learn how to do the basic firearm manipulation skills. It also allows you ways to perfect your draw, reloads, trigger control, any many other skills with out going to the range. Now don’t get me wrong, I send my fair share of rounds down range but it is to practice or hone skills that I do while dry firing at home. When you go to the range to practice, make it count. I have seen shooters in the past go to practice, zip through two hundred rounds, and then wonder why they don’t get any better. Maybe it’s because they aren’t hitting anything. If you can practice with the better shooters, jump at the chance. From my experience around here, whether it’s IDPA or USPSA, all your better shooters are more than happy to share with you ideas, tips, and tricks to become a better shooter. Please take advantage of it.

Set some goals for yourself. This will help give you direction as to where you want to go or do. Which in turn allows you to set a plan to get yourself down that road. Don’t make your goals out of this world, although one or two of those is ok. Make them something that is reachable. Have some immediate goals that are easy to get, and some intermediate goals that will take some work and effort to achieve. When you reach your goals, enjoy them. Don’t make another one right away. Remember though that your goals should bring you to the main goal. What that is going to be is different for every shooter. You need to decide what it is you want to get out of IDPA.

When I look around here at the shooters I see three sides to the purpose of IDPA. One side says it is a game, another side says it is defensive shooting kind of like training, and the last side says it is a shooting sport to practice the use of defensive shooting skills. I believe that the first and last statements are correct. Any time there is a timer and score involved, it is a game. We do use defensive shooting techniques in our sport. We do not however have the real life threats of being attacked, being shot at, having family members being taken hostage for real, etc. Therefore I do not consider it to be real life training.

No matter what you feel, as it doesn’t matter to me and shouldn’t matter to anyone else, we participate because we love the sport of IDPA. We all have different reasons, but we all should share the same common thing and that is the growth of IDPA and friendships. Next time you’re at a match and you see a new shooter, make them feel welcome, offer to help them in any way, and hopefully your club will have just gained a new member. I’m still relatively new to this sport and have a long way to go, but I know it will be an enjoyable venture. As I always say, Practice Hard, Shoot Fast, Shoot Straight, Stay Safe.
