recipient of a $16,000 gift, we wanted to share the good news in a very special way! We immediately began planning a surprise celebration for the afternoon of May 21 to make the BIG announcement. Our Board of Directors, staff, assisted living and patio home residents were invited to join us. Guests, residents enjoy Arts & Crafts Show The 2nd Annual Okolona Arts & Crafts Show, hosted at Wesley Manor, was a success again this year! Fifteen exhibitors were featured, many who were Wesley Manor residents. Nearly all exhibitors sold some of their works, with a steady flow of visitors all afternoon. Several folks stopped by while attending the Dedication Ceremony in the chapel. Y

Patio Homes resident puts scrap materials to good usefor toy horses. Later he would build models of cars that represented real cars he drove during significant times in his life, such as the Model-A Ford he’d ride in as a child or the ’37 Ford he and his wife, Lorene, had when they were first married. “For the model cars, I would start by making body molds from wood blocks, then wrap scrap metal around them,” Elmo explained. Rubber scraps

from old tires became “new” tires. Bottle caps became the hubcaps and pieces of old screen were turned into headlights. A piece of AstroTurf made perfect “carpet” for the interior of a red convertible. Elmo and Lorene moved into their patio home at Wesley Manor in 2013. “Our daughter said, ‘Mom, you’ve lived more since you all

moved to Wesley Manor than you would have living anywhere else.’” Lorene shared.

“I love the people here. It’s been such a blessing.”

Lorene Smith and Elmo Jeffries were married January 1, 1944 and will celebrate their 73rd anniversary this New Year. Three months later Elmo shipped out to the South Pacific as a Water Tender 3rd Class on the USS Almaack Attack Cargo Ship during World War II. Watch for the second part of Elmo and Lorene’s remarkable story in the next (Fall) issue of the Beacon! Y
