What to Look for in a Home Improvement Contractor

These are a few things you can look for right off the bat when you first start looking at contractors. Of course, there are also many questions you should ask and other things to look for, but these first few things will give you an early indication of whether or not a contractor is for you.

Investigate Their Business

First and foremost, make sure that any contractor you choose is an actual and established business. Find out if they have a valid business address, phone number, and how long they have been in business. You want to know that you’re working with a professional contractor, and not someone who’s working out of their garage on weekends.

You also want to not only make sure that the business is legitimate, but also that they are in good standing. Check local organizations such as the Better Business Bureau to make sure that the company doesn’t have any complaints against it.

Always check with your province’s regulations and find out if contractors need to be licensed and if so, what’s required for companies to be licensed. Then of course, make sure that any company that you research meets any and all requirements.

Permits

The chances are good that if you are doing any home remodeling at all, that you will need a permit. This is especially true if you are making structural changes to your home, or if your home has a special designation, such as a historical designation.

Communities and neighborhoods will also have their own permits and zoning requirements so you’ll need to make sure that you’ve met all of these requirements and have obtained everything you need to. Some contractors will take care of all of this for you, bringing you papers and things to sign when needed, because they are much more familiar with the process and can handle it much more quickly.

However, many companies also prefer to leave that responsibility to the homeowner so that they are not held liable for it. A company that won’t do it for you doesn’t necessarily make it a bad company; but you do need to know that beforehand so that you can get to work on getting the things you need.

Experience Counts!

New home improvement companies aren’t necessarily bad improvement companies. But, if the company is new, you want to make sure that they have a ton of experience behind them, both the main contractor and everyone who will be working with and for them. In this industry, experience is a must and there’s no way around that. Preferably, look for contractors that have worked under one name for over twenty years or so (or at least ten), and have held good standing with clients over that time.

Make Sure They Understand What You Want

When you first start talking to a contractor, you don’t need to discuss things like where electrical outlets will be placed, or even what kind of cabinets you want – at least not immediately. But you do need to have some plans or your sketches of the basic layout of the project, and the basic design you want and the changes you want made.

This will not only give the contractor a better idea of what you want, but you’ll also be able to ask if they are experienced in that area, and if they think it’s possible for your home.
