IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 15 No.3 March 2018 Page 1 o Vol. 15 No. 3 March 2018 Message from Chairman Greetings and thunder wishes to all IEEE members. IEEE Region 10, Student Activities Chair, Dr. Rajesh Ingle initiated to finalyse the process of closing the dormant Student Branches, by end of June 2018. IEEE headquarters communicated that 118 Student Branches have "0" members for eight consecutive months, and thus requested take immediate action to revamp or close the student branches. I take this opportunity by communicating to the educational Institutions that they need to activate the dormant or inactive student branches of Tamilnadu and Pondichery, instead of being dormant. It is the matter of fact that, the benefits and rights were not properly communicated or understood, closure of student branch will be the remark to the education institutions, later it may require an extra effort to form a new Student branch registration with different code number. Inactive student branch list can be obtained from IEEE Madras section, which was also circulated by the Sub Committee, Chair(SAC), Dr. S Uma Shankar. I wish IEEE Madras section to have ‘0’ inactive student branches with your support to get it realized. Around ten international conference approvals are in the pipeline to get it approved due to IEEE Meetings, Conferences, and Events (MCE) guidelines. IEEE implemented through Technical Co-Sponsorship (TCS) for the international conference approval at the cost of 1000$ and each paper publication cost of 15$. Mode of payment and other modalities to organize the Conference and digital publication are getting finalized shortly. IEEE Madras Section organizing Student Project 2017-18 proto type demo on 21.04.2018, IEEE Office, Chennai -600 025. Unique program, which was started during the year 2010, organized by IEEE Madras section continuously. Fourteen students projects are invited for live demo, meritorious project by validation will be awarded for funding. Registered participants will be paid second class train fare to attend this event. IEEE membership new registration fee is just 50% from 15 th March to 15 th Aug 2018, accordingly registration fee of 36$ and 13.5 $ for professional and student members respectively, members are requested to make use of this half yearly subscription. Message from Editor Greetings..!

I am happy to announce the March edition of IEEE MAS News letter. The previous edition may not have all events included, but however this edition has almost all reported events during the month of February and March. I apologise for the inadvertent delay. Indeed the IEEE MAS Link mailbox has plentiful reports and some of them were reported beyond said cut-off date. Despite the cluster of mails, sincere efforts have been made for prompt publishing of information.

At this juncture, I would like to let know the Student Branch Counsellors, Society Chapter Chairs and other reporting in charges that few amendments are made to ‘Guidelines for Event Reporting’. The procedure operates in two fold namely event announcement registry and event reporting. Accordingly, the circulars / Announcements of events planned under IEEE banner shall be informed in prior by email to [email protected]. After successful completion of events, a brief report with one photograph taken during the event shall be sent to [email protected]. It shall be noted that, henceforth the reporting would be a consolidated report in a calendar month for events conducted in that month, which should be reported before 7th date of succeeding month. The newsletter would be released on 15th of calendar month for events of preceding month. The guidelines for preparation of report and size of photograph can be found in the url https://goo.gl/ySHbmA

Any awards or recognitions and important information shall be sent to ‘event announcement’ mail for possible inclusion in Newsletter.

All are requested to kindly adhere to the new norms for timely release of Newsletters. It shall be noted that inclusion of topics into Newsletter is at the discretion of Editorial team.

I extend my heartfelt thanks to all IEEE members for the support and understanding and let us work in-phase for betterment of IEEE community and bring a positive change to professionals and student community.

Dr. S. Joseph Gladwin M.E., Ph.D. Associate Professor, ECE Department

IEEE SIGHT IEEE SIGHT survey at Senapattinam village, Tandrampattu Taluk, Tiruvanamalai. Date: 04th February 2018- Report: We a group of 4 students, one from Jeppiar College and three from Sri Sai Ram Engineering College, started the journey on 04th February 2018 by morning 7:00am at perungalathur and reached the venue at about 1pm. We did survey in that village for about 2 hours. The number of people in the village was 120 which includes 25 school going children. People have been living there for about three or four generations. Their main source of income is agriculture. They grow crops such as red chilli, rice, papaya etc. But their level of income is not satisfactory. There is a lack of electricity in all houses. Their houses are built of mud. The people suffer a lot due to the lack of electricity. The school going children are the main sufferers. They could not study in the evening as there is no sufficient light. So they could study only in the morning. In exam time they study with the help of kerosene lamps which is used as an alternative source of light. But these lamps are not used constantly as they could not afford it. (Kerosene-Rs.30 per litre). Also the children have to travel to Perungalathur for their schools which are about 8km from the village. There is no light in this path. Many students are dropped out of school due to this issue. Women in the area also suffer a lot. They could not walk in the night time without lights. They cook without electricity in a mud stove. As the ground of houses is made of red and black soil, many insects and snakes come inside the house. As there is no light it is a difficult task for them to identify it and it is a pathetic situation. As said earlier their main profession is agriculture. But as there is no power supply they use diesel or oil motors for water extraction from wells and it costs them more. This affects their income a lot. The men have mobile phones but could not charge them. They charge their mobiles by giving it in shops of perungalathur. They could not even contact the people outside the village in case of an emergency by mobile phones. There are no solar lamps in this area. Also the people are not supported by any government schemes and Nongovernmental Organizations (NGO). Due to the lack of education the people dwelling in the village are unaware about the outside world and the children do not have any exposure to the outside world. In spite of all oddities faced by them, the people are stubborn about doing agriculture and staying in their own place. It shows the love they have for their place. If they are given electricity they could be benefited a lot. The children could study from their home, the men could take water from wells by using solar motors and women could feel safe in the night time. It could

solve their day-to-day issues. The women also could indulge in small scale business if they are provided with electricity. We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.
