OVER 50 YEARS OF THE HIGGINS FAMILY JOURNEY
Anyone can say they can build. But we can deliver. We take on any challenge to breathe new life into communities and transform lives.
Building is the key element of what we do, but we do a whole lot more! We put community needs and safety first for every project. We develop relationships with people, forging success through partnerships and collaboration.
Using over 50 years of experience, we create solutions that overcome any financing or development obstacle, in any economy, on time and to budget. Our goal is to develop buildings that help communities thrive.
We make the impossible possible.
A family run company with values focussed on the needs of clients and the well being of staff.
One day in 1960, a young building estimator told a friend and colleague, "I'm going to start up on my own in building"
The response was immediate "I'll come with you" On the 1st of March 1961, Derek Higgins founded what is now Higgins Construction PLC.

The Higgins’ Management Training Programme was created to identify an array of young talent to work and develop careers within the Construction Industry and Built Environment. The programme allows individuals to get a taste for a number of core disciplines throughout the company before deciding on a discipline to specialise in.
Once enrolled on the programme, flexible rotations allow trainees to spend 34 months in four different departments before selecting one area of the business to pursue their career.
During term times trainees will be working a four day week, with the remaining day spent at an industry accredited University working towards a Construction related BSc (Hons) degree. The programme fully funds the degree and allows individuals the opportunity to ‘earn whilst they learn’ without the burden of debt once the course has been completed. Individuals will earn a competitive salary and will benefit from performance based annual pay rises.
THE MANAGEMENT TRAINING PROGRAMME
Key benefits
Whilst at Higgins, each management trainee will be enrolled in a mentor programme whereby a senior employee will provide individuals guidance on their career at Higgins as well as assistance with their studies.
At Higgins we recognise the importance of young potential and provide the building blocks for management trainees to advance to senior levels of management and Directorship.

CURRENT MANAGEMENT TRAINEES
JAMES ASSISTANT CONTRACT SURVEYOR 4“After leaving school with A levels I started a politics degree but knew fairly quickly that this was not the route I wanted to take. I began working at a small contractor as a Trainee Surveyor and then came across the opportunity to join Higgins and enrol on their Management Trainee Programme. I grabbed the chance as it allowed me to work and get qualified at the same time. I enrolled on a part time Quantity Surveying and Commercial Management Degree with one day at university per week, with Higgins covering all my costs. I have also been able to gain hands on experience working on various major projects and given the responsibility and autonomy to make decisions and manage jobs. Higgins has a lot of experienced people, who have been with the company for a long time and you always feel you are supported because they know you are learning and are happy to answer questions. I love the variety of working in the construction industry; one day you could be on site, next day in a meeting at Head Office or reviewing drawings with a client. You also get to work with a wide variety of people with different expertise. I really feel that my career is being fast tracked; I recently got promoted to Assistant Contracts Surveyor and I am gaining a wealth of experience.”
HAYLEY LIAISON AND ADMINISTRATION CO-ORDINATOR 4“I joined Higgins when I was 18 after applying for a temporary role as Administrator based on a project in Camden. I was really keen to stay with the company and interested in a career in site management so was really pleased to be offered a permanent role. I moved to King Square in Islington and was given the opportunity to study for site management whilst working alongside the team handling resident liaison. Higgins has been so supportive, mentoring me along the way and mapping out the different courses I should take. All my courses have been funded so I haven’t had to pay for any and I really feel like I have a career path in place. I am just completing my NVQ level 6 and will then move onto an HNC. Higgins has given me lots of opportunities to learn on the job and I love being out on site and part of the team and I am being given more responsibility doing various tasks including snagging. Before joining I wasn’t aware there were so many different jobs in the construction industry and so many opportunities for women. I would recommend it to anyone.”
ALEX ASSISTANT PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR 3“I left school and started a Civil Engineering degree at Plymouth University but after three months realised that it was not what I wanted to do so decided to leave and pursue a career in the design/technical side of the construction industry. I contacted a number of construction companies whilst working part time and was fortunate to get offered an interview at Higgins. I joined three years ago as PreConstruction Management Trainee with the opportunity to complete a degree in Construction Management. I am really pleased I have taken this path as I am now getting on the job experience and learning, whilst getting paid and completing my degree. The degree is part time over five years, which is exactly the same length as the original fulltime degree but my career will be much more advanced once I have finished. After initially being office based, I am now working on site which I really enjoy. It has greatly increased my understanding of the job as I am not just looking at things on paper; I am able to see how elements work practically and where changes may need to be made in terms of the buildability. The company offers a great deal of support and mentoring and within my team, four or five have already gone through the same process and degree which really helps. I was promoted to Assistant Project CoOrdinator in August 2018 and hope to be Project CoOrdinator once I am qualified and then move up from there.”

LEWIS TRAINEE SURVEYOR 3“I was given the opportunity to do work experience at Higgins after finishing my AS levels. I focused on basic surveying and admin work and really enjoyed it. When the chance to join the company’s Management Trainee Programme arose I was really keen to join. I was fortunate to work on the Group’s flagship project, Kings Crescent which has given me a wide range of experience as the role is so varied. I have also been able to take on a parttime Quantity Surveying degree, which I am now three years into out of five years. It has really helped me working and completing my studies at the same time as I am able to get actual knowledge and on the job training, as opposed to just looking at the theoretical side of construction. There is also the added bonus of earning money and coming out with no debt. I definitely feel my career has already progressed quicker than it would have done on a full time university course and I have gained a great deal of experience already working on a variety of projects.”
GEORGE TRAINEE SURVEYOR 4“Following my Alevels I joined a construction company as an Assistant Estimator and enrolled onto a part time Quantity Surveying Degree at Anglia Ruskin University. However, I had always wanted to be a surveyor so submitted my CV with various recruiters. I then received an email through university about opportunities at Higgins to become a Trainee Surveyor which really appealed to me as it was predominately a site based role. I joined the Group in September 2016 and have been based on a large regeneration scheme in Chelmsford. The role has given me wealth of experience and it’s great to be on site and actually see what you are pricing and talking about rather than being office based. I am finding it really rewarding because I am being given responsibility for certain aspects of the project and enjoy being able to mix with a wide range of people from subcontractors to Board Directors. My career is definitely progressing much quicker than the traditional route and I am about to enter the final year of my degree.”
LEAH NEW BUSINESS ASSISTANT 3“I joined Higgins after completing my Level 3 Diploma in Art and Design at Epping College. I was keen to get experience working rather than going to University and found out about an opportunity at Higgins so applied for it. I joined the company in September 2014 as part of the New Business team. I really enjoy my role as I am given the responsibility to work on the marketing, branding, events and PR for the company with an external agency and also the company website. I also liaise with a range of people on site and in the office coordinating the monthly internal staff newsletter. Higgins is keen to support further career development and this has enabled me to study for my Chartered Institute of Marketing qualifications which I am currently taking. It is really useful putting the theory into practice as part of my role. I enjoy working as part of the team and seeing the business develop. It is also really nice to be part of a family run business.”
STUART PRINCIPAL SURVEYOR “I am a Principal Surveyor on a £40 million project in Hackney. I look after the financial aspects of the project and currently oversee one Contract Surveyor. I joined Higgins in July 2000 on the Management Trainee Programme which enabled me to experience different departments in the company. It gave me a real insight into the various roles in construction and how each department works. The surveying department really appealed to me and seemed a natural fit as I enjoyed working with the Project Surveyor looking after the project finances and being based on site. I enrolled on a two year ONC in Building Studies, followed by a HNC and then a part time degree in Quantity Surveying, Higgins supported me throughout. The Management Trainee Programme has certainly allowed me to progress and grow within the company and it gave me a real insight into the construction industry.”

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
MANAGER
“I am responsible for identifying and bringing in new business opportunities for the company and building and maintaining long term relationships with new and existing clients. I also look after
the marketing and branding of the Group. I joined Higgins as Assistant Documents and Drawings Coordinator before getting the opportunity to move to the Community Development Team and become part of the Management Trainee Programme. I was
seconded to various departments within the Group to gain a better understanding of the business and also undertook my
Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification before enrolling onto a part time Construction Management degree. I was then promoted and moved to Business Development. Working and studying at the same time gave me the practical experience to apply to my job and also allowed me to accelerate my career.”

NICOLA PROJECT CO-ORDINATOR “As a Project Coordinator I have the unique role of working on a project from its initial design brief through to completion. I work closely with clients, designers (architects, structural engineers, mechanical and electrical engineers), as well as the site team and various departments throughout each stage of a project, and find my role extremely rewarding. I left school at 16 and joined Higgins Construction as an apprentice plumber. I worked for the Group for three years, before leaving to progress my career in that field. I was contacted by the HR department of Higgins about an opportunity to rejoin the business in the technical department through the Management Trainee Programme; this seemed an ideal way of gaining experience, in the business. I took the role as Trainee Project Coordinator nine years ago and have since completed a degree in Construction Management (Bachelor of Science with Honours) on day release. This enabled me to gain qualifications ‘on the job’ and has allowed me to progress my career a lot quicker, as I have gained a vast amount of knowledge working on a wide variety of projects. I was promoted to Assistant Project Coordinator and then my current role. The Construction industry provides vast numbers of varied roles; and no day or project is ever the same.”

RYAN SENIOR ESTIMATOR “I am responsible for pricing a diverse range of construction projects for the business. I joined Higgins 11 years ago after completing my ALevels at school. I saw an advert on the notice board for a Management Trainee Programme at Higgins and was keen to follow this route rather than full time university. I started as a Trainee Estimator and enrolled one day a week at Anglia Ruskin University studying BSc in Construction Management. Once qualified I was promoted to Estimator, and more recently to Senior Estimator. The Management Trainee Programme is an excellent way to obtain a qualification through university, and on top of it get paid and have excellent career opportunities. You also don’t have all the student debt associated with full time university.”
