COMMUNITY NEWS

FRONT LINE HEROES Christine Robinson has been greeting residents, visitors, and families at Hermitage Richmond’s front reception desk for over 30 years. However, with the challenges presented during this time of COVID-19, Christine’s daily work has changed and expanded significantly in order to meet the new demands we now face each day. While still the community’s primary point of contact by phone, she has indeed become an even more essential member of the “front line,” offering her reassuring voice and smiling face to residents who seek out companionship. In addition, Christine welcomes incoming teammembers and vendors each day at our outside screening table, interviewing and takingtemperatures to ensure that all who enter the building are well. She is the friendly faceto greet family members, volunteers, and delivery persons who drop off care packages, necessities, handmade masks, flowers, etc. and ensures that all items are properlysanitized before entering the building. She has organized a band of in-house deliveryfolks who promptly deliver these items to the residents. Christine is frequently seen training other team members who have offered to fillin at the front desk when needed and she ensures that they provide the same high levelof service that she expects of herself. We thank Christine for her love and dedication to our residents and teammembers at Hermitage Richmond! She is indeed a "front line" hero!

It’s the little things! From Charles Wickham,

Director of Donor Developement Sometimes, little things mean asmuch or more than big things.Jackson McKie is 8 years old and suffersfrom hydrocephalus, fluid on the brain.Dr. Daniel McNeely was preparing tooperate on him when Jackson entered theoperating room holding a toy, his furryfriend, “Little Baby.” Jackson explained toDr. McNeely that there was a little tearunder the bear’s arm and wanted to knowif he could fix it. So, after repairing ashunt in Jackson’s brain, he stitched upLittle Baby. The surgery was successfulon both Jackson and Little Baby! Jacksonwas more interested in Little Baby’ssurgery than his own. A famous neurosurgeon respondedto a simple request and it helped in thehealing of a little boy. What little thingscan you do today to make a bigdifference in someone’s life?A gift to your community SamaritanProgram or one of the other communityfunds, is a great way to do just that. Tolearn more, contact Charles Wickham,Director of Donor Development, byemail at [email protected] call 804-474-8724.

From Graham Patterson, Chaplain For the Hermitage Richmondcommunity, and especially our newresidents, I’d like to offer a sketch aboutour on-going Galileo’s Daughter project.Eighteen residents are now reading thebook, one chapter a week, with someresidents writing their chapter responses.Others are reading the book at their ownpace. Readings are sparking conversationsand new friendships. Set during theplagues in the 1600's, Galileo’s Daughterreveals the backstory of his scientificdiscoveries through letters with hisdaughter. These discoveries and richlyspiritual material make for a livelycommunity-building experience anddiscussion in our own time of isolation. Worthy reflections for us all. Contact Graham at 474-1828 if youwould like to sign up to participate.

August Writing contest: My Favorite Pet StoryOur winner is Allan Heaslip's "An Afternoon to Remember”

Back in 1951 on a lazy summer afternoon, Roger Southwick, mybest teenage buddy, and I were playing “Hearts” in his parent’s frontparlor. His dog, a large plum-colored German Shorthaired Pointernamed Jocko, had just left us, and wandered off to the kitchen. Just then, the front doorbell rang and a young Girl Scout on a cookie drive was standing on the other side of the heavily reinforcedscreen door. In a wild chattering of toenails on the oaken floor, Jockoroared out of the kitchen and flung himself, breast high, at the door, giving vent to a wild fit of feigned Teutonic rage. With a shriek of terror, the Girl Scout leaped off the porch andraced down the driveway and out the gate. In her slipstream, a fewcookies fluttered down. Well satisfied with his virtuoso performance,Jocko dropped down onto all four legs and trotted over to us,anticipating at least three curtain calls. Duly rendered, he then showered us with a rain of wet, sloppycanine smooches. His duty performed, this magnificent old fraud with a great self-congratulatory smile on his face, ambledback to the kitchen to resume his afternoon nap. Nine years later, as a grey-muzzled old patriarch, Jocko passedaway well assured of his place in Dog Valhalla. TAPS was played as twoyoung men stood by. Parenthetically, the American Kennel Club has ranked the GermanShort-haired Pointers as the 9th most popular dog breed in the U.S.
