Goerdts adding personal touches to their new home

MELROSE The minute Kristen Goerdt walked into the former Jim and Nancy Mohs rural Melrose home in February of 2013, she felt at home. Since March of 2013 it has been home to Kristen, husband, John and their children Leighton, 5; and Wyatt, 3. We fell in love with everything about the house, said Kristen. The best part was the land and the feeling of privacy we get when the trees fill in during the spring. One big perk was one bedroom that was converted to a

Kristen shares the story of how the introduction was suppose to happen. Joe moved to California a few

closet. John finally has his own closet in our room. Since it was spring and the snow was melting, they never saw the property without snow. So when the snow finally melted each day brought new treasures. We discovered all the beautiful flower beds and rocks that were placed throughout the yard, said Kristen. They made their house their own, remodeling to meet their needs. This for a couple who met in the summer of 2007 after they were introduced by Joe Gamradt, who grew up with John in Sauk Centre.

years before we met. Joe and his now-wife, Michelle, had a plan to introduce me to John in the hopes of John moving out to California. The plan backfired and I ended up moving to Minnesota one year after we met, she said, adding. If you ask my husband, he will claim I followed him home.

They got married in Reno, Nev., on their way to Minnesota. John is the son of Mary and Mike Goerdt and works for Jerrys Pumping in Sauk Centre. Kristen was raised in Madera, Calif, the daughter of Sharon Cotter and Howard Cotter. She is a second grade teacher at Sauk Centre Public School. John owned a home in Sauk Centre when they got married. We both wanted to move to a home with land since both of us grew up with space to run. We wanted to give our children the same experience, said Kristen. They listed their house for sale in November of 2012. One Friday in February of 2013, Kristen ran across the listing of the Mohs property. That Saturday they took a drive with their realtor to look at the home. I remember driving up the drive and thinking wow. I also remember it was one of the windiest and coldest days. I went directly in the house and from the first time walking through the door it felt like home, she said. The following week they had the first viewing for their Sauk Centre home. To our surprise and delight, they put in an offer and we took it, said Kristen. We closed on both houses in a month and took ownership of our new home in March of 2013. The first month of moving into the house they painted every room except for two of the four bathrooms. We wanted some warmer tones in the house, especially

since the entire front of the house has windows, said Kristen. To add their own touches, they did many small projects around the house. We added a back splash to the kitchen, refinished the cabinets in the laundry room, and I started to experiment with sewing by making curtains, a bench cushion and painting old furniture, she said. The first major remodel was their daughters room, which had been used as a gym/spa room. The did all the work in the room, except for laying the carpet. It is completely a girls room. She has pink, white and gray balls hanging in one corner and adjacent is an old settee

that I re-upholstered. She also has an entire wall that is a chalkboard, said Kristen. Next was the mud room, which still had the original flooring from when the house was built in 1978. It also had a door that, opened, allowing them to bring wood into the wood room that fed the once-wood-burning fireplace in the basement. Both fireplaces have been converted to gas now. We updated the flooring with tile and painted the trim white, along with updating the light fixtures, said Kristen. Their most recent project was their sons room in the basement, which they had two years to plan for. One evening we were sitting on the couch and John said, What about artificial grass for his room? I told him, Sure, as long as its fluffy and thick like carpet. The seed was planted and I was off researching synthetic lawns, said Kristen. She found a Minnesota dealer who sells SynLawn. He sent her four samples and they picked the one they liked. They ordered the size they needed and installed the lawn the same as carpeting. Calling the grass unique, Kristen said, How cool for a kid to have to rake his room. Along with the grass, Wyatt has an amazing pallet wall and a sliding barn door. In his room, his wardrobe handles are made from railroad nails from Oregon and his dresser pulls are from a 100-year-old

Knowing that all the work done in their home has been designed and finished by John and her and Johns dad gives them a feeling of satisfaction. John and I work very hard to have the things we have. I am always looking for a bargain and am not afraid of a piece of furniture that has been outcast. I love craigslist, she said. Outside projects have been few. Last summer Kristen had her very first garden. What a joy! The kids loved going down to the garden each day to find new food, she said, with plans to double the size of their garden this year.

They have purchased nine chicks and look forward to eating fresh eggs. To be very honest with you, my dream is to have horses once again. Riding horses has always been a passion of mine and I see that same desire with my daughter. So having horses is also in the plan, she said. They have built a swing set for their children, along with a pool. Last summer I built a wood swing and a platform bed that hang from two of our many trees, said Kristen. Their property provides a perfect backdrop for Kristen to take their family photos. With a place like this the possibilities and projects are endless, she said. We would like to replace the flooring in the basement

and possibly make a bigger master suite bath now that both kids are downstairs, said Kristen. The Goerdts feel fortunate to call this place their home. There are still days when I drive up the driveway thinking, How did we get so lucky? said Kristen. So each time we finish a project, all the hard work is worth it because we get to call this place our home. Plus, theres satisfaction knowing their children are growing up in an atmosphere similar to what they did. Its the little things in life they enjoy. Like seeing their children spend days outside bringing them frogs, worms and any other treasures they can find. Kristen and John are happy to have found their haven that they are making their home.

*FarmhouseThe term farmhouse doesnt refer to style, but rather to location and function. They were originally built on rural land with an emphasis on an agrarian lifestyle. Many farmhouses were modeled after popular architectural styles at the time they were built, such as Victorian and Colonial. However, farmhouses were built for need rather than design, often featuring functional porches as a transitional space creating a much more informal and inviting exterior.

Advice from a professionalJensen explains low-maintenance landscape options

Bobby Jensen, co-host of: Grow with KARE PHOTOS by JENN JANAK

Im a lazy gardener, proclaimed Bobby Jensen, co-host of Grow with KARE. When Im preparing a garden, it has to be low maintenance. On March 14, Jensen spoke to a large crowd of gardening enthusiasts at the Todd County Garden Day in Long Prairie. As spring is just around the corner, Jensen reminded audience members of how simplistic a landscape can be, with the same appeal of one thats high maintenance. A low-maintenance landscape allows you to pick a plant, plant it in the right spot, using the correct soil, and stand back, Jensen said. Before altering your current landscape, think about what you have, what you want and what needs to change in order to get there. Look at your landscape in the eyes of a child, like youve never been there

before, Jensen said. This will help you establish a plan. A plan is essential, even if its scratched together on a napkin. Think about a color scheme, what plants will

fare well in the climate and the space available. You have to ask yourself the question, Am I willing to take care of this plant? Jensen said. Native plants are some of the best options available when redoing a landscape. Not only can they tolerate the climate well, but also for very little maintenance, they become a thriving flower. Information regarding what plants are native to your area can be found through your local Minnesota Extension. Perennials were not available 10 years ago, Jensen said. Now, theyre a beautiful motion picture throughout the seasons. It takes some planning to

decide which perennials will fare best, but the tags that come with each plant explain how to give proper care for growing success, Jensen said. We can read whats horticulturally correct, he said, but that only tells us half the story. In real life, we have to make decisions that will work for our unique situations. Deciding what types of plants to use can be one of the most difficult decisions. However, the planning and execution isnt over yet. As Jensen described during this presentation, borders have become essential to the visual appeal of a landscape. Traditionally, landscapes were blunt with very little depth, he said. Now, were focused on curving borders and adding dimension and color to the landscape. While its key to create a unique border, one that catches the eye of an onlooker, its equally essential to maintain simplicity. Jensen suggests limiting the pallet, curves and depth of the landscape. Work in odd numbers of plants, he said. Likewise, use no more than 11 plants and the depth of landscape no more than 3 feet. As planting and designing ensues, make sure to group plants together based on their nutritional needs. It also becomes pleasing to the eye to plant families together, even though different plants may be used. Landscaping is meant to imitate nature, Jensen said. I caution you to not go overboard. There is such a thing as too

much. Take time to consider ease. Trees and bushes are common plants to use for filling space and adding dimension, but they can become difficult to maintain. Jensen recommends grasses as a healthy alternative. Grasses are fabulous plants, he said. Perhaps the most important aspect of creating the perfect landscape is the mulch. Everything should be mulched to form a weed barrier and hold in moisture. Wood chips, leaves, chopped grass or compost make for excellent mulches. Minnesotans love rock, Jensen said with a chuckle. Rock is not mulch. These key points will help create a low-maintenance landscape. However, Jensen warns that no landscape is low maintenance the first year and will take time and patience before youre satisfied; but that is all part of being a gardener. Yes, we want to create that perfect landscape, but it becomes so much more than that, Jensen said. We enjoy getting our hands dirty and working towards something. Create a landscape thats not only visually appealing, but also one that you can take a kid out and instill in them what we know; to cultivate the love for gardening.

They were inspired by Britains thatched cottages, but built with steeper roofs and larger chimneys to withstand cold Northeastern winters. Windows flanking the front door, dormer windows up top and cedar shingles are also typical of the style. Most of todays Cape Cods were built after World War II; they were the first style used in modestly-priced housing developments.

SAUK CENTRE Ive always believed that it is your family that makes your house a home - not the structure itself. With that in mind, making the decision to renovate was a pretty easy one, actually. Our current home once served as a radiator repair shop and office among other things, but was completely renovated over the course of the past several years to fit our familys needs. With some vision and a lot of hard work, mostly on behalf of my very handy husband, it is now the place my family of four calls home.

    From twigs to treasures

For many, many years, Jo Meyer has been rummaging the ditches and woods around her home near Dent in hopes to find the perfect branches, wild grasses and other pieces of nature that help create the most beautiful wreaths and home dcor. Once you find the perfect combination of branches, you can create fun centerpieces or gifts, Meyer said. Why pay $45 or more at a boutique when you have all the resources in your backyard? On March 14, Meyer spoke to an interested audience about her expertise in creating inexpensive, timeless dcor for the home at the Todd County Garden Day in Long Prairie. While Meyer sells many of her creations through private buyers and sales, such as the Gold Rush Days and Willow Wood Market, she especially enjoys inspiring others to do the same. Before jumping the gun, it all begins with a little scavenger hunt around the land. Ironwood, small branches, no more than the width of a pencil, and pussy willows all create astonishing, simple pieces of art. Pick anything, Meyer said. Dogwood, switchgrass or any kind of alfalfa. I love using it all.

ditches, youve been paying too much attention to the road, Meyer said. As one collects the items, secure them together with a large rubber band. Not only will this make travel easier, but it also aids in keeping the fragile grasses intact. The best part about collecting is you can do it all year-round. Well, except during hunting season, Meyer said with a laugh. One of Meyers favorite projects, and perhaps what she is most well known for, is wreaths. After purchasing a small, wire frame, Meyer will lay small grasses and branches on top of the frame. Similarly, she may take 5-foot ironwood branches and bundle them together. Using the strength in her arms, Meyer will bend the wood into a circular shape, creating a wreath without the wire frame.

Ironwood is really fabulous for those type of things, Meyer said. Its durable, but easy to work with. In some instances, Meyer will take spray paint to the branches or other items to add a touch of color. Using a burgundy color reveals a more natural look to the branches, while a splash of lime green helps incorporate the feeling of spring. However, in recent projects, Meyer has begun to not use spray paints, giving her work a primitive look. The goal is to create a piece that looks like its a part of nature; thats what we want, Meyer said. The artistic woman is always thinking of new ways to incorporate nature into wreaths, centerpieces and any type of home dcor. At the Garden Day event, Meyer demonstrated how easy it is to turn a wire garbage can into a presentable piece of art. First, one should paint the can with a desirable color. Then, turning the can upside down, begin adding different twigs and grasses through the wired holes. Meyer suggests enhancing the display with decorative pine cones, berries or eggs. My philosophy is that dcor is like a choir, Meyer said. Sure a soloist might have a good voice, but a choir sounds much better. Dont be afraid to add more to the dcor; it looks better with more. For more information on Meyers work, how to create a wreath and where to purchase similar dcor, please visit www.meadowsofminnesota.com.

*ContemporarySome folks consider contemporary and modern architecture to be essentially the same. However, contemporary refers to todays building styles, which can vary in design and appearance. Both styles are similar in that they look to connect indoors and outdoors, but contemporary homes tend to emphasize energy efficiency, sustainable materials, lots of natural light and the use of recycled non-toxic materials.

REMODELING NEW CONSTRUCTION From Start to Finish!the winter months before transplanting them outside.

If done right, your kitchen can look like spring all year round, Wienhold said. Throughout his presentation, Wienhold touched on three main points to ensure a successful growing season: choosing a flower, prepping the growth environment and transplanting.

Choosing a flower There are many different types of bulbs that can be planted and nurtured prior to spring; however, Wienhold recommends tulips, daffodils or hyacinths. Daffodils and hyacinths do well inside and outside and force nicely, Wienhold said. While tulips are doable, they can be difficult to force; especially the middle and late types. Any size bulb can be purchased and used. If one is planning ahead, it can be economically beneficial to purchase the bulbs at Thanksgiving, when they are less expensive and still fresh. Bulbs in storage now will not mature to a full bloom. Most importantly, when choosing bulbs, make sure they are all of the same variety so that within a pot, the bulbs bloom near the same time. Pay attention to the type of bulb you are purchasing, Wienhold said. Different bulbs will bloom at different times.

Steiner LUMBER CO.Prepping the growth environment The most important part of forcing bulbs is to have the right environment, Wienhold said. That environment includes a proper planting procedure, including fertilizer, and a cool, dark growing space. Bulbs have an internal clock and will grow slower in dark, cool environments. Ideally, the temperature of the storing space should be 40 degrees. This is key to having perfectly-timed blooms for transplanting in the spring. Before doing anything, find a space with these conditions that will allow optimum growth of the bulb, Wienhold said. Then, using a large water trough, or some other container, create a soil that will benefit the bulbs. Wienhold suggests taking black, sandy loam soil and mixing a half handful of 19-19-19 fertilizer into the trough. 19-19-19 fertilizer works really well, or bone meal, for that extra boost, Wienhold said. Dependent on the type of flower, determine how many bulbs can be placed in a single pot. Hyacinths shouldnt be overcrowded, with three bulbs per pot at the most; daffodils can be arranged to fit as many bulbs as possible into the diameter of the pot. Fill 2/3 of the pot with soil and then arrange the bulbs. Before placing the pots in the storage area, sprinkle dirt over the tops of the bulbs. Monitor the bulbs and add water whenever they appear dry.

Transplanting As soon as the bulbs are placed near a window, or any small amount of sunlight, they will begin to bloom. My kitchen looks like a garden, its beautiful, Wienhold said. Choosing the right spot to plant the bulbs can be critical for subsequent years. Think about the future of your bulbs, Wienhold said. If planted in the right spot, the bulbs can continue to grow year after year, for 30-plus years. Wienhold suggests planting each bulb about eight inches below the ground so that they are protected from the harsh winter elements. Likewise, upon planting, sprinkle some fertilizer over the top. Just as the bulbs were chosen based on their blooming time and similarity, those bulbs should be planted in similar groups. Following these guidelines could result in the most beautiful flower gardens for when spring finally arrives. For now, though, the bulbs will create a colorful sanctuary in the household.

*PrairieDeveloped in the Midwest by architectural trailblazer Frank Lloyd Wright, the prairie style was built based on the idea that a home should serve all practical needs without being overly embellished or showy. It was influenced by the Arts and Crafts Movement and features many of the same concepts such as built-in furniture, simple materials and open floor plans. But prairie-style homes also feature long flat roofs, rows of windows, horizontal lines and organic patterns.

*RanchFirst built in the 1930s, ranch homes were originally modeled after rural Western ranches. Ranch architecture bears a slight resemblance to the modern style with open floor plans and easy connections to the outdoors. Focused mainly on practicality, most ranch homes also feature an attached garage. Exterior details may vary, which allows for personalization. Single-floor and split-level floor plans live under the ranch style.

*TudorOriginating in England, the Tudor style is one of the most recognizable home styles. Best known for steeply-pitched, multi-gabled roofs and decorative half-timber framing, Tudors were mostly built in established neighborhoods during the first half of the 20th century. The steep-pitched roofs are perfect for rainy and snowy climates, which is why many of these homes can be found in the Midwest and along the East Coast.

Tall columns and pediments, painted plaster exterior, horizontal transoms, symmetrical shape, bold moldings and embellishments are all key to the style. Large and imposing, this home style is commonly found on large estates and historic plantations.
