THE SHELL GAME Note: This activity may be done at the end of a lesson or at the reunion as a review of key concepts. Objective: Participants will review diabetes information and skills. Length of Time Needed: 10-15 minutes Materials Needed: Ping pong ball, coin or small shell and four styrofoam cups List of questions What to Say and Do: Line four cups up on a table. Place the ping pong ball, coin or shell under one of the cups. Mix the cups up by sliding them on the table. The contestant gets up to four chances to guess the right cup. Chances are won by answering the DWD review questions correctly. If all four choices are correct, the contestants automatically wins.

What to Say and Do:Line four cups up on a table. Place the ping pong ball, coin or shell under one of the cups. Mix the cups up by sliding them on the table. 2. People with diabetes, just like all other people, should avoid substituting sweets for healthy foods at every meal. (True)

3. In using the plate method, vegetables should cover less of the plate than meat. (False- using the plate method, no more than one quarter of the plate should be covered by something from the meat group. Vegetables should cover more of the plate than the meat.)

4. People with diabetes have twice the risk of heart attacks as other people. (True- Also people with diabetes who have a heart attack are much more likely to die or to have a second fatal heart attack than people with out diabetes. The experts think that high blood glucose and high blood pressure in people with diabetes may cause some changes in the blood vessels.)

5. Not all fats are high in calories. (False- all fats are high in calories, so people who are trying to lose weight will want to go easy on oils while limiting saturated and trans fatty acids whenever they can.)

6. Hidden Salt is not a source of sodium in our meal plans.(False, it may be the biggest source of sodium in our meal plans. Hidden salt is found in fast food, restaurant food, and canned food.)

7. Foods rich in carbohydrates can not raise blood sugar.(False- food rich in carbohydrates CAN raise blood sugar.)

8. All fats are created equal. (False- not all fats are created equal, eating too much saturated fat and trans fats may increase the high risk of blood vessel disease in people with diabetes.)

9. Osteoporosis a disease that results when bones become too thin happens most often to me.(False- this can happen with any age, and happens most often to women. Getting enough calcium all through life is important.)

10. Soluble fiber is found in berries, oats, and dried beans It may help the body get rid of some cholesterol in ourmeals. (True – It also helps slow down the rate at whichsugar is absorbed into the blood after food is digested.)

Questions may also be taken from the pre and post questionnaires. This would be a good review for the participants.
