Natural stone has long been the landscap-ers’ material of choice. Relatively new pav-ing materials such as concrete unit pavers and exposed aggregate slabs have enjoyed popularity for some time, as have wall ma-terials like pressure-treated lumber and pre-cast concrete wall systems.

True to the saying though: "Everything old is new again." The use of natural flagstone paving and stone walls has grown by leaps and bounds in recent years. Stone has been used as a paving material since the days of the Roman Empire.

Today, flagstone is available in a variety of shapes colours and textures. Square-cut flagstone refers to paving that has been cut to a square or rectangular shape. This mate-rial is best used in a formal garden style or for stepping stones. Square-cut flagstone is available in light and dark grey, black, taupe and varying shades of natural tones. The texture varies from smooth to a rough cleft finish.

Random flagstone has an irregular shape and is of much value in a natural-style land-scape. It is available in the same colours and textures as square-cut flagstone. Large over-sized random flagstone can add drama to informal walkways and sitting terraces.

Flagstone paving can be laid on a gran-ular base, or over concrete paving. In-stalled correctly, flagstone paving can last as long as the life span of your home. It’s appearance is enhanced over time as the elements in the stone oxidize and add great depth to the colours within the stone.

Natural stone can also be used for steps. Ontario limestone provides an appro-priate step material in most natural gar-dens, especially if used as part of a natu-ral rock outcropping. We often overlook the beauty of such an arrangement be-cause it is a naturally occurring sight in the local landscape. Its beauty, however, is not lost in familiarity to the many tour-ists who visit this area every year.

The prized feature of any landscape is a natural stone wall. Again, stone walls are available in similar colours to flagstone, and can be installed in a wide variety of patterns and styles. The enduring quality of this material is without equal. Used in conjunction with a water feature, a natu-ral stone wall will distinguish any garden.

The beauty of natural stone is unsur-passed. Age only enhances its natural colouration, a feature no other material can match. While cost is often thought to be a drawback to natural stone, it of-ten costs less than a wooden deck, and on a par with many new styles of precast concrete pavers.

To bring new life to an existing sitting ter-race, try adding the Old World elegance of natural stone paving and walls to en-hance your outdoor living areas.

(NC) Before rushing outdoors to break cabin fever after this histori-cally cold winter, don’t go too far. Ex-perts tell us that a little spring clean-ing can go a long way when it comes to pest control.

“With this year’s bitter winter, it’s possible that more pests than nor-mal will be in search of the shelter, food and water homes offer,” says Al-ice Sinia, PhD, a resident entomolo-gist for leading pest control compa-ny, Orkin Canada. “As temperatures rise, pests become more active, so homeowners should take the nec-essary steps while cleaning to help protect their homes against possible infestations.”

Spring is the perfect time for pests to exit their hiding spots and become more visible. To prepare for this says Sinia, establish an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to-ward pest control. IPM incorporates proactive techniques such as exclu-sion, sanitation and home mainte-nance to help keep pests out of your home.

“As temperatures rise, pests become more

active, so homeowners should take the necessary steps while

cleaning to help protect their homes against

possible infestations.”

The following tips – motivated by SPRING – will help to keep your home pest-free

Screen and SealInspect for potential entry points. Structural deterioration may have occurred during the harsh winter conditions so those spots may have to be screened or sealed. Install or repair window screens and seal any cracks and crevices with steel mesh and caulking to prevent easy access to the inside.

Property Clean-upDense landscaping can provide cov-er and harbourage points for pests. Clean out gutters and trim vegeta-

tion near the home to eliminate hid-ing places and identify any access points.

RelationshipBuild a relationship with a pest man-agement provider (unlike pests, they won’t bite says Sinia). A reliable pro-vider is a good partner in pest man-agement and will take the time to create a customized IPM program for your home.

InspectionAs temperatures increase above 15 degrees Celsius, inspect your home for spring pests such as spiders, ants, centipedes and cockroaches. If you have any sightings of these pests, you could have a larger infesta-tion. Immediately contact your pest management provider.

Nix clutterNix the clutter that has built up over the winter months. Old card-board boxes, containers and unused equipment piled up in basements and garages can create harbourage for pests. Consider replacing all card-board boxes with plastic storage bins. Pay attention to clothes piled in closets and storage rooms as these areas are a common hiding spot.

Go GreenBy taking preventative measures to manage pest risks, you reduce not only pest pressures, but also the po-tential for treatments in and around your home. Simple spring cleaning chores like dusting, vacuuming, and cleaning out closets can help reduce pests in and around your home.

Your local pest management provider can help you get started on a customized program.

By Pieter Venema , Royal Homes

Traditionally home building is embracing Pre Fab building. The possibilities of build-ing design with Royal Homes is infinite – driven by your lot and your budget.

A Custom Prefab Home is designed with Modules or Blocks. You can use as many Modules as you like. Some of our Custom Designs use up to 12 Modules on 3 Levels.

Lot owners are taking a closer look at the power of custom Pre Fab homes.

There are good reasons to choose to Pre Fab:

1. The building time is shorter. The factory has many advantages over building on site. Building times are shorter because the factory isn’t held hostage to the whims of the weather. Two weeks of relentless rain does not slow the building process – because it is primarily indoors.

This winter is a great example – just when we thought spring was near, we were pelted with another layer of snow and cold weath-er. That does not impact factory building.

2. The Pre Fab Module build is off site. One of the biggest challenges of on-site construction is to live in a construction site for multiple months – or years, in some cases. We all know how frustrating it is to work around construction. With Pre Fab, that time is drastically reduced. The build-ing is built off site – and delivered in nearly completed units. There is no elongated dis-ruption of services.

3. The build is greener. For companies concerned about their en-vironmental impact, factory built is the way to go. Standardized processes make the build ultra efficient, eliminate needless waste. It just makes sense.

4. Stringent Quality Control.Every prefab Royal Home must meet four different quality control standards through-out design and construction, the Ontario Provincial Building Code, Local Municipal Bylaws, the Canadian Standards Associa-tion (CSA) and the toughest of all our own 250 point inspections.

5. Design is driven by You. The factory does not constrain the design. The design drives the factory and this was

made possible by modern CAD programs that were embraced by our management team to say “Yes” to clients we will make it happen.

6. Options and Custom Materials. You can select from thousands of options displayed on Royal Homes website and at our Design Centres or just tell us what you want and we can source it for you and make it part of the build.

Warranty and Service up to a Decade. Royal Homes has been building Prefab Homes for over 45 Years so our Warranty means something.

Top 5 renovation tips to create More sPace(NC) As real estate prices continue to climb, the cost to trade up an existing home for a larger one has increased sub-stantially. As a result, more and more Canadians are choosing to renovate their homes, rather than relocating. In fact, it was recently revealed that renovation spending in Canada reached a record $68 billion last year, outpacing spending on new home construction.

"While the hunt for more square footage can be

challenging, homeowners shouldn’t feel like a costly second story or complete

addition are the only options."

Here are five great ways to create or optimize space in your existing home:

1. Finish the basement. This one renovation holds limitless po-tential and can increase the resale value or income potential of your home. Think about the possibilities: a home theatre, office, spare bedroom, basement apart-ment or recreation room.

The key to doing it successfully is to fo-cus on what’s behind the walls, espe-cially since moisture is a common issue in basements. Choosing the right insula-tion is critical. Look for products that are vapour permeable, dimensionally stable and mould and moisture resistant. Many contractors say they use Roxul prod-ucts for that assurance. For example, the Comfortboard IS semi-rigid sheath-ing board paired with Comfortbatt batt

insulation combats thermal bridging and protect against mould and mildew growth. An added benefit of this type of stone wool insulation is that it’s also fire-resistant to 1,177˚C (2,150˚F). As well, for interior walls and ceilings, Safe ‘n’ Sound insulation is ideal because o f its ability to absorb noise and indoor traffic sounds, ensuring your new-found space is a peaceful one.

2. Create an open-concept feel with light and colour. If your home wasn’t blessed with tow-ering windows, installing French doors and pot lights can encourage light to travel more freely, creating the illusion of space. Likewise, choosing a paint colour for walls, trim and moldings that is light-er and cooler in tone (think soft grays or blues) will help to reflect light and give the room a more open feel.

3. Remove non-load-bearing walls. Homeowners have the opportunity to rethink the layout of their home by removing non-load-bearing walls. Removing structur-ally unnecessary walls can make your whole home feel larger and improve the flow, light-ing and function of your home.

4. Convert your garage. For many homeowners, the garage becomes an overflow room for storage––and is often a walk-in headache. Instead, convert it into another living space, like a guest bedroom or home office. Install carpet and quality ther-mal insulation such as Comfortbatt to keep in warmth and block outdoor noise.

5. Choose furniture and accessories care-fully. Adopt a minimalist’s eye. Begin looking around your home for furniture or acces-sories that overwhelm the space. Interior designers recommend choosing low-profile or small-scale furniture for rooms with less square footage. Dual-purpose items, such as ottomans with storage chests inside, are a budget-friendly way to save on space while staying organized.

4 questions to ask yourself Before startiNg a reNovatioN

(NC) One of the worst mistakes a home-owner can make when tackling a major renovation is to jump in sledgehammer first without a plan. Whether you’re an aspiring homeowner looking to enter the housing market with a “fixer upper,” or coming into the New Year looking to renovate and add function or value to your space, a renovation can be a good solution, but it can also be mess.

Dust and hard work aside, a renovation has obvious appeal as it generally brings a higher resale price. Many don’t realize that planning for a renovation some-times requires even more work than the execution itself, but if you’re up for it, the end result is a bigger and better home.

So, here’s what you need to ask yourself before any renovation:

1. What is your budget? When planning for a renovation, al-ways be conservative. If your budget is $100,000, plan to spend $80,000. Reno-vations are almost always guaranteed to go over budget, as unforeseen issues pop up. Having a contingency plan from the start will get you through when you

check in to see if the work is on track.

2. What is your timeline?Knowing this in advance as well as the scope of work being done will help you determine whether you stay in your home during a renovation or go else-where. Living through a major renova-tion is never easy, but if you decide to do it, keep in mind the added cleaning at the end of the day to make the space livable again. It’s always a good idea to request a payment schedule that is tied to your timeline and project milestones.

3. Have you done the required re-search?In the case of renovations, there is no such thing as over-asking or over re-searching. It’s good to have a rough idea of what materials cost in advance, as well as what is needed for a particular job. Also, don’t be afraid to do your home-work when it comes to picking the right contractor. Get several quotes and refer-ences and check out any sites in progress to get an idea of how they work.

4. What is my resale goal?Ask yourself how much you’re looking

to increase your home’s value. This will help determine how much you should be investing in order to hit the target. For owners renovating with resale in mind, investing in spaces like the kitchen, bath-room or new flooring, although more costly than minor cosmetic changes, can pay off big time when it comes time to sell. If you’re not sure of how long you’ll be staying, it is always safe to renovate for the future.

Investing in classic, quality finishes now will keep you happy in your space and increase its value in the long run.If you’re planning a renovation, take your time and plan ahead to do it right.

(NC) A relaxing deck gives you the great outdoors without the need to venture too far from the comforts of home. When done right, a deck improves the appearance and utility of your home and can add to its resale value.

Homeowners shoudl pay special at-tention to the plan for any new deck. To ensure the structure enhances your property, both now and in the future, a good design and quality materials should be your guiding principles.

Whether you plan to build it yourself or hire a contractor think of these ques-tions:

How will you use your deck? Consider the activities you typically do outdoors and how a deck could make them more enjoyable. Barbecuing? Sunning and lounging? Supervising the children at play? Enjoying nature? Setting off a pool or spa?

How can you enhance your house and yard? A deck usually sits against your house and alters the landscape of your yard.

Always keep the surroundings in mind and consider the combination of visual elements. Think about the view from the deck, and if it is raised, how it will look from ground level.

How large and what shape? The deck should suit the scale of your house and yard. Going too large or too wide for the space can visually over-whelm and detract from the setting. Avoid a plain, boxy rectangle by add-ing interesting angles or changing the orientation.

What materials will you use? Cedar and redwood are popular choic-es, but for the budget-minded, look for pressure-treated pine and select your pieces with care. Composite deck materials are growing in popularity in some areas.

With careful attention to your needs and landscape, a deck creates a wel-come transition between your indoor and outdoor spaces. And, it might clinch the deal when it comes time to sell.

Build a great deck with a solid plan

Make sure that the surface is thoroughly clean and that the wood

is dry.

Go to extremes to get the wood clean: pressure-washing, sanding,

and detergent scrubbing.

Remove all loose nails and replace them with the next larger size.

Fill the resultant nail hole with a high-quality, exterior-grade putty.

Use a hinge pin (removed from a door hinge) as an oversized nail set

— it’s much easier for a novice to use than a common skinny tipped

nail punch.

Fill all other holes with a high-quality, exterior-grade putty.Remove all excess putty to keep

sanding to a minimum.

Apply a high-quality polyurethane caulk at all joints.

Prime all bare areas and puttied spots with a high-quality, oil-based

primer.

Finish decks with a high-grade, oil-based finish.

Handrails can be finished with a good-quality acrylic paint.

Never paint a wood surface that has previously been oiled.

The paint won’t stick, and you’ll have a mess on your hands forever.

If you insist on painting an oiled surface (or on oiling a painted

surface), you must first take the time to use a paint remover followed by

thoroughly sanding the wood.

Good Luck!

When the times comes that you are ready to purchase your hot tub, keep a few things in mind.

Hydrotherapy and Comfort: Your new tub must provide you with the best massage therapy, in the most comfortably designed seating.

Efficiency and Construction: Knowing that your tub will stand the test of time while maintaining low monthly operating costs further helps to reduce the stress of a new purchase.

When considering the purchase of a hot tub the professionals will help determine your reasons for the desired purchase.

• Are you wishing to entertain youryoung family and their friends? Size and efficiency may be more important to you than therapeutic benefits. • Are you looking for a quiet calmplace to relax with your favorite person? The ambiance of soft lighting and gentle music may be your focus. • Are you looking for a therapeuticmassage after a workout or just to relieve the aches and pains which plague us in later years?

Jet placement and ergonomic comfort would then be a big consideration. The amount of jets often seems to be the focus of our consumers when in fact, if massage therapy is your purpose, the position of jetting and the ability to manipulate the flow and choose your style of jetting would be more important than the number of jets.

Motors are another hot topic with the shopper. Hot tubs generally have two types of motors. One is designed for therapy. This motor pushes the water through the jets which creates your massage. The other motor is designed for water circulation which aids the filtering system in helping to ensure good water clarity. Some of these circulation pumps are also connected to the heating system; the advantage is that the larger massage motor would not be needed to heat the water. Less horse power means less hydro consumed, that in turn means more money left in your pocket.

Water depth is also important when considering your perfect hot tub. You neither want to be under water needing a snorkel to breathe, nor do you want the water level to reach only your biceps and leaving your upper body exposed to

the elements. Keeping this in mind it is very important that you test drive your tub prior to purchase. Move from seat to seat until you find that perfect fit. While moving from seat to seat, you will have the opportunity to make sure the jets are in position to best deliver your ultimate massage. You can also ensure that none of the jets are projected so that you feel them sticking into your back. The jets should be recessed so that you do not feel them.

Another important issue to decide is where you will be positioning your hot tub. As close to the door as possible is always the right answer. The further you need to go in the cold weather, the less you will be inclined to venture out. Keep in mind that the placement of your hot tub has a lot to do with energy consumption and personal enjoyment. Try to choose a sheltered location whenever possible, high winds are the enemy. Also if you are thinking about submerging your tub in a deck or enclosing it in any way, please remember the service man! Easy access to the equipment translates to lower labor costs for you should the unit require service. Some tubs are more convenient for servicing than others with respect to equipment positioning.

Four important factors to consider before you purchase your New hot tuB

Health Benefits of Hot TubsThe simple act of immersing yourself in hot water sets a wonderful chain of events in motion that underscores just how closely our health and well-being is attuned to water. In hot water, your circulation adjusts to create a slight increase in blood pressure and blood rushes to the skin, where it’s further warmed. The blood vessels expand and the pressure drops back down. The warmed blood penetrates deeper into the tissue below the skin, bringing more oxygen. As more vessels expand, you notice a soothing sensation. Your muscles start to relax and your body becomes more efficient at cleansing carbon dioxide from muscles. Your immune system kicks in, increasing antibody production; endorphins –the body’s natural painkillers are released, melting away aches and pains.

Hydrotherapy is also associated with the relief of several debilitating health ailments. These ailments include constant joint pain from arthritis, muscular pain and stiffness, migraine

and tension headaches, poor circulation, relief from premenstrual cramps, and healing from sports injuries. For sufferers of these ailments, a 20-30 minute soak can actually contribute to long-lasting relief from their symptoms.

“Soaking in hot tubs can also combat the negative impacts of diabetes, and even the common cold.”

A study by the McKee Medical Centre in Loveland, CO suggested that soaking in a hot tub for 30 minutes a day could reduce the amount of insulin used to control diabetes by as much as 18 percent. The enlarged blood vessels that come with immersion in hot water also bring relief to soakers suffering from the common cold, helping unclog nasal passages. Increasing the body’s temperature to 103º F / 39.4º C in a hot tub can increase the number of virus and bacteria fighting white blood cells three-fold. Most cold and flu viruses don’t multiply above 101.6º F / 38.6º C.

Now that you have an idea of the benefits of a hot tub and what to consider while shopping, lets discuss where to shop...Shop Local! “Shopping local means keeping money in your community by employing your friends, family and neighbours. For you it means customer service and support from your store located just around the corner. It also means quick attention from the service department which will stock a full inventory of parts, no need to wait on part deliveries.“

Paddlesports, any on-water activity involving self-propulsion, are a pastime enjoyed by people all around the world. For some, being on the water in a canoe, kayak, or stand up paddleboard offers a joy that is hard to find anywhere else. It’s a passion that crosses all boarders and has no boundaries.

“As Canadians, we are proud of our nation’s Provincial Parks,

abundant paddling destinations, and extensive backcountry

adventures.” It is no surprise Canadian heritage is rich in paddling with iconic canoeist and filmmaker Bill Mason’s name flowing throughout the history of the sport.

Kayaking itself is a form of paddling that spans centuries, and its popularity is spread worldwide. This traditional paddlesport continues to grow as modern technology and building materials evolve making kayaks more accessible.

Even more recently, the explosion of stand up paddleboarding, or SUP, has created a whole new generation of paddlers.

So why do many people fall in love with paddling?

The answer, or more accurately, answers to this question are as diverse as those who submerse themselves in paddlesports. That in mind, and knowing that time on the water is fleeting, I have attempted to simplify things with my self-proclaimed Top Three Pleasures of Paddling:

Top Three pleasures of PaddliNg

Page 26: Home, cottage and boating guide 2016

home, cottage and Boating guide 201626 home, cottage and Boating guide 2016 27

1. To Recharge and ReconnectThe hustle and bustle of the modern world and a hectic city life is a recipe for stress and unrest. Most of us know the bitter taste of such a dish and its overwhelming aftereffects, but luckily there is an easily administered cure!

For some, being on the water in the wilderness provides tranquility. Paddling over a calm, crystal-clear lake as the sun crests the horizon easily returns one to a state of wellness, and a weekend canoe trip with family or friends provides a much-needed escape from the daily grind.

Simply put, paddling helps us recharge our batteries and allows us to find happiness in our busy lives.

Participating in paddlesports also helps

us reconnect, both with nature and with each other. The most intimate moments with wildlife come from the quiet, unobtrusiveness of being in a canoe or kayak, while bonds of friendship are forged and re-tempered by a shared passion for paddling.

2. The Meaningful Memories Any paddler, canoeist, kayaker, or paddleboarder, will tell you that some of their fondest moments in life involve paddlesports. Photo albums and home videos are filled with paddling adventures and camping trips, experiences are shared as lore, and lessons are passed like trade secrets.

Being fortunate to grow up with a family cottage on a lake, my childhood is full of paddling memories. Portaging with my

dad and grandpa to go trout fishing, having canoe races with my sister and cousins, and purposely dunking my friends for a laugh all bring a smile to my face as I recall them.

For those without such a luxury as kids, there were always scout camps or paddling clubs available that offer similar recollections. Friendships and traditions that last a lifetime are made on the water, and the lessons learned are ones that help shape our lives for years to come.

3. A Healthy Body, Mind, and SoulThere’s no questioning the fact that paddlesports of any form have a multitude of benefits regarding your health. Physical or mental, any time spent on the water will improve your well-being.

Physical benefits are obvious in that paddling is a great workout to improve strength, stamina, agility, and balance just to name a few. And on the contrary to popular belief, most paddlesports, especially kayaking and SUP boarding, provide a complete body workout. Proper technique utilizes core muscle groups with feet, legs, and hips working together to retain control and stability. Believe me when I say arms and shoulders are definitely not the only tired part of a paddler’s body after an extended outing.

Not only does paddlesports put your body through a workout, but it also puts your mind through the paces as well. Learning something new like how to roll a kayak or SUP yoga is like flexing your brain muscles in order to make it stronger – an active mind is a healthy mind.

Apr. 29-30 / May 1, 2016

“Physical or mental, any time spent on the water will improve your well-being.”

Lastly, and maybe more importantly, as a paddler and by working with paddlers, I have seen firsthand the positive effects being on the water can have relating to mental health.

The peacefulness of paddling and closeness to nature brings about a calmness some struggle to find anywhere else.

No doubt you can think of several more pleasures of paddling, but I’m sure we can all agree on one thing: time on the water is an experience second to none. Whether it’s a canoe you care for, a kayak your crazy about, or a SUP that stokes your fire nothing beats paddlesports.

The joy of paddling is shared universally,

with company or without, and no modern advancement compares to its simplistic richness. Give me a paddle and a boat or a board, and I’ll find contentment going with the flow. So what are you waiting for?

See you on the water!

(NC) Camping has changed a lot over the past 50 years, but one thing that has remained the same is the wonder-ful memories families make together during their outdoor adventures. In Canada’s national parks and other hidden gems including several na-tional historic sites, campers can re-serve a variety of accommodations, as basic as a rustic tent-only site, a fully equipped campsite, a roofed accom-modation such as an oTENTik, a cabin, or even a tipi.

Seeking a more urban escape?

Look no further than the new camp-ing accommodations offered along Ontario’s historic waterways. Parks Canada has introduced new programs and activities for new and seasoned campers alike. The Rideau Canal and Trent Severn Waterway national his-toric sites are ideal getaways from the hustle and bustle of city life without having to load up on camping gear

and refill the gas tank. This year, the Rideau Canal is adding cabins along its shores for the perfect level of com-fort for those travelling through the historic locks by canoe or kayak or if you want to drive just outside of the city for some piece of quiet.

Looking for a cowboy adventure?

Visitors can now book their getaway at Grasslands National Park in southern Saskatchewan. This often underrated gem in Canada’s national park system offers one main campground with amenities plus the option of booking one of their four tipis for a truly unique camping experience under the stars.

Dreaming of heading west?

Fort Langley National or Fort Rodd Hill national historic sites in British Columbia offer unique settings where you can stay in an oTENTik and im-merse your family overnight in Cana-

dian history. The oTENTiks are defi-nitely a family favourite. When the other visitors have left the grounds for the day you really have the run of the place. Kids have so much fun they won’t be asking for screen time while they’re here.

Willing to take the road less travelled?

Mingan Archipelago National Park Reserve is well worth the trip. Re-nowned for its unique islets and reefs, this is truly an out of this world landscape. After being gently lulled to sleep by the soft sounds of the sea, you’ll be ready to explore the region.

Stay away from tick habitats to PreveNt lyMe disease

(NC) Are you gearing up for a long weekend at the cottage, a camping trip, or a hike in the woods this summer? Regard-less of your outdoor plans, be sure to avoid contact with tick habitats, often the cause of Lyme disease.

Lyme disease is a serious illness caused by the bite of an in-fected blacklegged tick. They're usually found in forests and overgrown areas between the woods and open spaces. As tick populations are spreading in Canada, it's possible to be bitten outside of these locations.

"Ticks can't jump or fly"They like to sit on vegetation like tall grasses or shrubs and climb on to passing humans or pets that may rub against them.

The best way to protect against Lyme disease is to pre-vent tick bites. If you're planning on trekking through the forest, remember to:• Avoidshortcutsthroughthickbrush and grass.•Walkinthemiddleofmaintainedtrails to limit your exposure.

Also, don't forget to:• UseinsectrepellentcontainingDEET(activeingredientto keep bugs away) or Icaridin (always follow directions).• Wearclosed-toeshoes,long-sleevedshirtsandpants. (NC) For many Canadians, relaxing in the boat is a summer tradition. From engaging in water sports to cruising around the lake, boating is an activity the entire family can enjoy.

Before heading out on the open water, it’s important to familiarize yourself with boating rules and regulations to keep you and everyone aboard your vessel safe.

As with driving a car, you never know when a boating accident may occur.” Erring on the side of caution is recom-mended so you can be prepared for any situation.

If you’re planning to take a boat out, ensure you have your Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).

In Canada, it’s illegal for anyone to op-erate a powered recreational vessel unless they pass the required boating safety course. Check that your card is on board with you each time.

It’s legally required to have one prop-erly-fitted life jacket for each passen-ger. Encourage passengers to wear their life jacket in case they suddenly go overboard, regardless of swimming abilities.

Drinking and boating is another issue to keep in mind. Statistics from MADD Canada show that alcohol is involved in approximately 40 per cent of boat-ing fatalities every year. Be aware of your surroundings and be vigilant when sharing the water.

stayiNg safe when boating this summer

Here are a few tips to consider before you head out on the water:

• Performregular, routinesafety checks, including examining the battery and its connections.• Confirmyourvesselissuitable for the body of water you intend to travel on.• Ensureyourboathasafully stocked emergency prepare- ness kit.

Every boater should have signaling devices, like a whistle or air horn, close by in case of distress. Having items like a waterproof flashlight or signal flares can make all of the dif-ference in an emergency situation.

(NC) Boating season is upon us. With cottages up and running and the sun shining, getting out on the lake is a top priority for many boat owners.

There are several safety precautions to ensure a fun and safe boating season, like reviewing the weather forecast, and checking fuel levels and personal flotation devices. But carrying a proof of competency for your boat is also a crucial element.

Did you know that anyone oper-ating a motorized pleasure craft must carry proof of competency (except in the Northwest Territories and Nunavut)?

Transport Canada introduced the proof of competency requirement in 1999, to help reduce boating deaths and injuries.

Proof of competency can be:✔ a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC);✔ proof you passed a boating safety course in Canada before April 1, 1999;✔ a specified marine certificate; or✔ a signed Rental Boat Safety Checklist.

Transport Canada recommends you take a boating safety course to learn the:✔ minimum safety equipment you must carry on board✔ Canadian Buoy system✔ rules for sharing waterways✔ laws and regulations that apply to boating✔ best ways to respond in an emergency

tips to take care of your boat this summer

(NC) Days spent on the lake can be the highlight of the summer for many cot-tage goers and boat owners. However, there are several responsibilities that boat owners need to be aware of to keep themselves, their boat and the waters safe. Transport Canada outlines boat safety, maintenance and disposal as the top items to keep in mind.

Here’s a brief look at tips for your boat’s entire life-cycle:

1. Plan. Learn as much as you can about the pa-perwork, training and safety equipment you’ll need before you begin your boat-ing adventure.

2. Buy your boat. Make sure to get all the required safety equipment for a boat of its size as well as proper proof of competency.

3. License any boat with a 10 horsepower (7.5 kilowatts) or more motor. You’ll have to display this unique licence number above the waterline on both sides of the bow.

4. Be responsible. Keep your boat in good condition; en-sure you keep your licence information up to date; know and follow safe boat-ing practices; respect the environment and have the proper safety equipment on board.

5. Dispose of your boat. There may come a time when you no lon-ger want or need your boat. If it is still in good condition and you choose to sell it, make sure the ownership documents and the licence is properly transferred.

If the boat is not worth selling, don’t let it become a wreck:• Findaboatrecyclingfacilityinyour area.• Searchforcharitiesorcompaniesin your region that may want your boat.• Askthenearestlandfilloperatorifthey accept old boats.• Asklocalboatretailersiftheytakeold boats in trade.

Abandoned boats pose serious risks:• Leaksfromtheseboatsorwrecksmay pollute the water and harm people and the marine environment.

atv safetytiPS

(NC) Riding an ATV can be an amazing outdoor experience. But before you hit the trails, make sure safety is part of the plan, especially around tracks and trains.

“All railway property - including railway yards and bridges - is private property,” says Stephen Covey, police chief for CN.

“You should never ride an ATV (or snowmo-bile) on railroad property or take shortcuts across it, as these activities are dangerous and illegal and trespassers can be charged and/or fined. Safety is very much a shared responsibility if we are to avoid accidents.”

Here are some tips for riding your ATV safely:•Crossonlyatdesignatedlocations.• Rideonapprovedtrailsonly (look for signs about approaching a railway crossing).• Expectatrainonanytrack, ineither direction, at any time.•Beespeciallycautiousatnightorin snowy conditions (both make it difficult to see obstacles, passing trains or railway crossings).• Stopatrailwaycrossingstoensureyou don’t ride in front of or into the side of a passing train.

•Contacttherailway(usingthe emergency number prominently posted at crossings) or call 911 immediately if your ATV or snowmobile gets stuck on a track or railway line.•Keepinmindthathelmets, engines, wind and weather may muffle the sound of an approaching train.•Donotridenexttothetracks (locomotives and railway cars are wider than the rails).

Keep your communities safe and report any unsafe behaviour on railway property by calling CN Police at 1-800-465-9239.
