Home Collection2011
The VitraHaus, designed by the architects Herzog & de Meuron, accommodates the Vitra Home Collection. A walk through the seven rectangular houses – which are stacked upon one another – is a journey through de-sign history, where visitors can encounter and reflect on important contemporary designers. The designs that make up the Vitra Home Coll ec tion are presented in various living and work spaces: classics by Charles & Ray Eames, George Nelson, Isamu Noguchi, Jean Prouvé and Verner Panton are combined with con-temporary pieces by Maarten Van Severen, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Antonio Citterio, Hella Jong erius, Alberto Meda, Jasper Morrison and others. Vitra sees each and every arrangement as a collage that blends the old with the new, that brings handcrafted and industrially made products together, that mixes technology and art, and that consists of decorative and practical pieces as well as both found and collected items. Not before all of the pieces are brought together in a personal collage are the arrangements as unique as the people who live with them. As time passes, the arrange-ments change due to the tastes and living situations of their owners. Yet one thing always stays the same: a few favourite pieces remain the centre pieces of the collage – often for a lifetime.
