Yes, every person is called by God to be a saint. It does not matter in the least what we look like, how smart we are, where we come from, what we do. A saint is one who day after day tries to love God and others in the same way that Jesus loved us. Sainthood does not mean a kind of artificial perfection. Sainthood is not about making ourselves into some kind of plastic statue that just happens to be also living. Sainthood is about being human in the most radical way possible – really living out our humanity to the limit. In marriage it means being a loving partner to another person in a sexual and compassionate way. For others, part of sainthood is learning how to cook and take care of others – spouses, children, elderly parents. Still for others, it is about doing our best at our job and trying to create a human atmosphere in the work place. Being recognized as holy has nothing to do with being holy. The few saints that the Church has proclaimed as official saints are a mere drop in the bucket compared to all of those who are now enjoying the bliss of heaven. Today is a great day of rejoicing for all those who strive to remain faithful to God’s calling. Today we remember all those who lived their lives faithful to the teachings of Christ. And in remembering we gain encouragement for our own following of Christ. This is a feast of solidarity. It proclaims that no matter what evil things happened to our brothers and sisters while they lived on this earth, in the end the last word belongs to divine love. God is the victor and God gives the victory over evil and death to all who remain faithful to the teachings of Christ. I hope that we all have our own personal saints to encourage us – people that we knew, perhaps a relative or a friend, who has died and whom we hope is in heaven. On this day we remember those who have played a significant role in our lives – anyone who touched our lives in some lasting way. These are our saints. As we remember them today, we as Church become conscious of the dignity and importance of every one of our members. There’s a story about Florence Chadwick the great swimmer. During her swim from Catalina Island to the Southern California coast she could see nothing but a solid wall of fog. Her body was numb. She had been swimming for nearly 16 hours. Alongside Florence in one of the boats, her mother and her trainer offered encouragement. They told her it wasn’t much farther. But all she could see was fog. They urged her not to quit. With one half mile to go, she asked to be pulled out. Later she told a reporter, “Look, I’m not excusing myself, but if I could have seen land, I might have made it.” It was not fatigue or even the cold water that defeated her. It was the fog. She was unable to see her goal. Two months later, she tried again. This time, despite the same dense fog, she swam with her faith intact and her goal clearly pictured in her mind. She knew that somewhere behind that fog was land and this time she made it. May this feast day be a strong reminder to us of our goal – one that seems hidden at times in a dense fog. May we have the grace during the times of discouragement to keep our goal in mind – the goal of life forever lived with God and all our sisters and brothers who have gone before us. Fr. Joe

We are all called to be saints.

2nd Grade Family Sessions are this Sunday, November 1 in the dining room, so parents plan on joining your child during their normal Faith Formation class for a great hands-on, faith-filled experience! As these sessions are intended for both the parent and child, please don’t drop your child off and leave because you’ll be missing out on a

wonderful opportunity to spend some quality one-on-one time with your child. To ensure mini-mal disruption, our nursery is available for younger siblings. PARENTS: These grade level Family Sessions ARE NOT associated with our sacramental preparation program, which is COMPLETELY SEPARATE. Our grade level Family Sessions are designed to give you an opportunity to actually ex-perience what your child is being taught and learn-ing in their Faith Formation class.

1st Grade Family Sessions are next Sunday, November 8 in the dining room.

Also this Sunday, class lesson plans focus on “All Saints Day.” Children in Faith Formation are invited to dress up as their favorite saint/patron saint in the spirit of the day. However, no Hallow-een costumes, please. Those were worn Saturday night at our Halloween Spook-tacular! If you still haven’t returned the purple Behavior Guidelines Form that was distributed at Parent Orientation, please complete one this weekend! We only have a few left to turn in, so let’s get a 100% return rate on these!

There will be no Faith Formation classes on Sunday, November 22 or Sunday, November 29 so that we can celebrate and enjoy the Thanksgiving Holidays! Weather permitting, our annual FIRE DRILL is scheduled for next Sunday, November 8 during both Faith Formation sessions. Please dress your child appropriately to be outside for roughly 10 minutes. With the flu season almost upon us, please be considerate of both your child’s catechists and fellow classmates and keep them home if they are sick or running a fever. Just give us a call and let us know so we can mark their absence ex-cused. Our annual Breakfast with St. Nicholas is just around the corner on Sunday, December 13, so start collecting those new child’s toys for donation to the local women’s shelter to help ensure a Merry Christmas for the children. Watch for more infor-mation in upcoming bulletin announcements.

Would you like to sing at the Children’s & Youth 5:30 pm Christmas Eve Mass &

Breakfast with St. Nicholas?

If you can read and are in the 2nd Grade or up, come and join in our joyful songs of praise! Practices begin Saturday, November 14 from 10-11:30 am in the church. A signup sheet can be found outside the choir/music room in the Church.

For more information, contact Mary Russell at

972.291.6213, 214.773.1293 or [email protected].
