present your palm, flat out and high enough to receive

Communion. Intinction is not permitted.

Knights of Columbus Council #764 Sponsors Silver Rose

in Honor of Life and Our Lady of Guadalupe Saturday, August 8th, following the 5:00 PM Mass

A silver rose on a nine-month pilgrimage will be the centerpiece of a special prayer service at Holy Spirit.

The Program honors Our Lady of Guadalupe and expresses both international unity and dedication to the

sanctity of human life.

The journey of the silver rose begins each year in March and ends on December 12, the Feast of Our Lady

of Guadalupe. During that time, Silver Roses travel from town to town along eight routes throughout North

America. Several of those routes begin in Canada and end in Mexico. One route ends in Washington,

D.C., and another ends at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, where the Knights of Columbus

was founded.

The Silver Rose Program began in 1960, when the first rose - a real, live one - was blessed by a bishop in

Ontario. The rose then traveled to New York and then to Texas where it was taken across the border into

Mexico. The rose ended its pilgrimage at the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Monterrey on

December 12. To better ensure future annual trips, a silver rose was ultimately made. Today, due to the

popularity of the Program throughout the North American continent, eight silver roses travel unique routes.

In 2001, when Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of the Knights of Columbus, expanded the Silver Rose

Program, he commented: “Through [the Silver Rose Program] we honor not only Our Lady of Guadalupe

and express the unity of the [Knights of Columbus], but we also reaffirm the Order’s dedication to the

sanctity of human life. It is to the Blessed Mother that we turn in prayer as we work to end the Culture of

Death that grips our society. As we think in terms of ‘One Life, One Rose,’ it is most appropriate that we

turn to Our Lady of Guadalupe who made known her will through Juan Diego and the miracle of the roses.”

The Transfiguration of Christ is the culminating point of His public life, as His Baptism is its starting point, and His Ascension its end. Moreover, this glorious event has been related in detail by St. Matthew (17:1-6), St. Mark (9:1-8), and St. Luke (9:28-36), while St. Peter (2 Peter 1:16-18) and St. John (1:14), two of the privileged witnesses, make allusion to it.

Stephen Ministry provides focused care to those in need while relying on God to provide the cure. Many of us could use the non-judgmental care of person, a Christian friend…a Stephen Minister. Our Stephen Ministers provide one-on-one lay care to help meet the needs of individuals who are hospitalized, terminally ill, bereaved, in a job crisis, disabled, homebound, lonely or in a spiritual crisis. Stephen Ministers also provide care to those facing life transitions and to new members of our Parish.

For a Stephen Minister, please call the Church Office at 881-4781 and you will be paired with a Stephen Minister of the same gender who will meet with you weekly until your situation improves.

Eucharistic Adoration Due to the confines of the Adoration

Chapel and the distancing requirements

imposed by the coronavirus pandemic, Eucharistic

Adoration has been relocated to the church. The days

and hours for adoration are: Monday thru Friday:

8am to Noon and 4pm to 6pm Adoration during these

hours may be preempted by other services (funerals,

etc.), so check the church’s web site for updates. To

assure someone is always present before the Blessed

Sacrament, committed adorers who have one of these

hours are urged to continue their attendance.

USCCB Prayer - Coronavirus

Holy Virgin of Guadalupe, Queen of the Angels and Mother of the Americas. We fly to you today as your beloved children. We ask you to intercede for us with your Son, as you did at the wedding in Cana. Pray for us, loving Mother, and gain for our nation and world, and for all our families and loved ones, the protection of your holy angels, that we may be spared the worst of this illness.

For those already afflicted, we ask you to obtain the grace of healing and deliverance. Hear the cries of those who are vulnerable and fearful, wipe away their tears and help them to trust.

In this time of trial and testing, teach all of us in the Church to love one another and to be patient and kind. Help us to bring the peace of Jesus to our land and to our hearts.

We come to you with confidence, knowing that you truly are our compassionate mother, health of the sick and cause of our joy.

Shelter us under the mantle of your protection, keep us in the embrace of your arms, help us always to know the love of your Son, Jesus. Amen.

Spiritual Adoption Update - Mrs. Gisela Dyer

Under normal circumstances, Holy Spirit parishioners would be in the middle of our 8th cycle of

Spiritual Adoptions of children in danger of abortion. However, with the arrival of the Corona virus, life has

become anything but normal.

So, it is not possible to sit in the church vestibule and invite parishioners to sign a pledge to

spiritually adopt an endangered unborn child. However, prayer for the unborn must continue more than ever.

You are invited to make a silent binding pledge to pray for 9 months for one specifically named

unborn child, known to God, and cut out and use the prayer printed there on. Some of you may have prayer

cards from previous years’ adoptions. Use those, just substituting the name of the new baby. Prayers should

start in August and end in May 2021.

To God, every life is precious, because life proceeds from Him and returns to Him. This is a given.

For the last 37 years (since Roe v Wade) a largely silent holocaust has swept our country. Sixty-one million

surgical abortions have been performed; 61,000,000 - a number that staggers the mind and should result in

outrage. Not so

Fully affirming that to God black lives, and indeed all lives matter, perhaps some parishioners will

consciously adopt a black unborn child in their 9-months prayer, because:

To God, that child matters.

This emphasis points toward our deep human longing for transcendence, for a glimpse of divine light such as that experienced by Peter, James, and John. Friday, Aug 07, 2020 MEMORIAL OF CAJETAN, PRIEST Faith takes courage Since the first followers of Jesus, the church has had its struggles, but always, the Holy Spirit keeps the church faithful. Courageous people in every age rise up to lead renewal within the church. In the early 1500s, that person was Cajetan, who felt the pain of the Body of Christ and dedicated himself to doing something about it. With friends, he founded a group of clergy dedicated to trusting in God’s providence and claiming no property nor money from the people—the opposite of clergy at the time who were becoming wealthy off the backs of the people. In time, the same church that Cajetan sought to reform rec-ognized him as a saint. Who are the courageous ones in your life who help you stay faithful? Draw strength from them to help institute necessary reforms in our time.

Saturday, Aug 08, 2020 MEMORIAL OF DOMINIC, PRIEST Listening is the first step in preaching Into a 13th-century world where few knew basic theology, and wealthy, mediocre preachers traveled with retinues, Dominic brought dramatic change. He encouraged his friars to study the essentials of the faith, preach eloquent-ly, live simply on what they could beg, and leave enclosed monasteries to reach out to people where they saw the need. By putting himself amid people, Dominic found op-portunities to brilliantly counter the Albigensian heresy, a popular dualism that saw spirit as good, matter as evil, and denied the Incarnation. Sunday, Aug 02, 2020 EIGHTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME The glass is still half empty August is National Water Quality Month, which may not sound exciting, or even like a religious issue. Yet the sa-cred character of water is attested from the Creation sto-ry, in which God’s Spirit hovers over the waters, during the corrective flood in Noah’s time, at the Red Sea’s free-dom crossing, up to the cleansing sign of Baptism. Isaiah issues the divine invitation: Come to the water! But what if that water is risky to drink, as it is for some of our nation’s citizens and a sizeable percentage of the world popula-tion? Support clean water projects, because water is life.

Monday, Aug 03, 2020 A port for any storm Jesus’ mother Mary has many titles—one of them is Our Lady, Star of the Sea. Under this name, she is a protector of seafarers. But Mary is a guiding star for all of us as we seek her son through the storms of life. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux wrote: “If the winds of temptation arise; if you are driven upon the rocks of tribulation look to the star, call on Mary. If you are tossed upon the waves of pride, of ambition, of envy, of rivalry, look to the star, call on Mary.” Don’t lose sight of her, and you won’t lose your way to Christ.

Tuesday, Aug 04, 2020 MEMORIAL OF JOHN VIANNEY, PRIEST Come to the curer of souls Most male Catholic saints were priests. Some were priests whose great intellect sparked important theological concepts. Others traveled to exotic places to teach about Christ. Still others died as courageous martyrs. But the French saint John Vianney—commonly known as the Cu-ré of Ars—became a saint simply by being an ordinary, but extraordinarily dedicated, parish priest. In French, the word curé means “pastor,” or one who is "charged with the care of souls." Vianney cared for thousands of souls who sought spiritual healing in the confessional, where he spent up to 16 hours a day. Seek ordinary ways to be ho-ly today.
