CELEBRATIONS

This is a weekend of grace in our parish. We celebrate two significant aspectsof our faith.

First, this weekend we keep the Feast of Jesus Christ, Universal King. The litur-gical feast was instituted by Pope Pius X1 in 1925. The Pope took a long view ofhistory and saw that the world had been in turmoil for centuries: the FrenchRevolution, the Industrial Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the growing senseof negative Nationalism, all these had created great upheavals in society. ThePope wanted to recall Christians to a fundamental insight into the Gospel. Jesushad proclaimed himself King and had initiated his Kingdom, a Kingdom of graceand truth which no early political system could destroy.

Pius X1 simply used the title “Feast of Christ the King”. In 1969 Pope Paul V1moved the feast to the last Sunday of the Church’s year and called it “The So-lemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Universal King”. At a stroke Pope Paul evokedthe truth that the Kingship of Jesus will be fully manifested at the end of time.He is King of all creation, a reality which is true already even though not yet fullymanifested.

Secondly, this weekend a large group of children from our catechism classesmake their first Holy Communion. We are all twice blessed in these two cele-brations. The children who make their first Holy Communion receive Jesus, Kingof Kings and Lord of Lords. They become more deeply established in His King-dom and they are strengthened for the rest of their faith journey.

This weekend is also the celebration of the end of the Church’s liturgical year.Since last Advent we have lived together the mystery of faith, we have experi-enced grace and truth and even if our response has not always been what wewould have liked, we are still living in a context of grace and love. The beautifulconclusion of the Church’s year is a hint of the beautiful conclusion to our wholelife. May that be pure grace. And may those who have gone to God this year, enjoy the fullness of grace and truth.
