CANOSSIAN SISTERS It’s that season of change again! Sr. Cristina, who has completed her six years (2001-2007) as local leader of the Canossian community here and as Pastoral Associate at Holy Name, will move on to a new assignment. Sister will leave San Francisco on June 30th. Her last day at Holy Name will be on Sunday, June 24th, when the parish will hold a farewell reception in the Flanagan Center after the 11:30 AM Mass. To replace Sr. Cristina in both positions will be Sr. Stella Negri, an Italian who worked in the Canos-sian missions in Mexico for many years. Sister is not new to Holy Name, she substituted for Sr. Cristina in 2004, when Sister went to the Philippines for a family emergency. Sr. Stella will begin her work in the parish on August 15, 2007. The Canossian community on 38th Avenue will be composed of: Sr. Stella Negri, Sr. Maria Hsu, Sr. Esther Ling, Sr. Connie Martinez. We thank Fr. D’Angelo, the staff, and the whole parish, for their loving support of our religious congregation through the years. Please continue to help us to pray for more good and generous vocations.

LAY CANOSSIANS An important part of the large international Canossian family is the Association of Lay Canossians. There is an active group of LCs here in Holy Name. If you want to know more about them, who they are, what they do, why they are called “Lay Canossians, how to be come one, please don’t hesitate to ask for information. You may talk to any of the Lay Canos-sians you know, especially Josephine Dito, Caridad Wright, Angela Testani, Jim Regan, or their Spiritual Director, Sr. Cristina. They welcome new candidates for membership. The Association is for men and women, from 21 years of age and above.

MINISTRY FAIR THANK YOU Fr. D’Angelo and the parish staff wish to thank all the leaders and volunteers of parish ministries and organizations, for the beautiful and presentable exhib-its put up for the Fair. Congratulations, for a job well-done. The Flanagan Center was almost transformed into an art gallery. We also thank the parishioners and guests, who took time to view the exhibits and to so-cialize after all the Masses on Pentecost Sunday. May the Holy Spirit inspire more and more parishioners to use their talents for the service of God and God’s people.

ALTAR LINENS VOLUNTEERS Have you ever wondered why there are always clean altar linens for Masses and other liturgical celebrations in our church? This is made possible by generous women behind the scenes. As the saying goes, “gratitude is the act of a noble heart”, it’s about time that we thank them publicly, as a parish. We know that they would rather remain anonymous. But their service to our church is very valuable. We ask God’s blessings on each of them and their families: Teresa Hurley, Lily Louie, Cecilia Wong, take turns to wash and iron the purificators and hand towels, Anne Burke takes care of the corporals and altar cloth, Roonie Flaherty sees to it that we have altar covers for special occasions. God loves cheerful givers, and all of them are!

The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

A SIMPLE ACT

In one parish in which I was involved in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, a man named Jack was pre-paring to receive the sacraments of initiation. Part of the process in that parish was to have the catechumens (those preparing for the sacraments) join other parishioners in various ministries and activities in the parish and in the wider community. Jack was a gregarious, comical, wonder-ful man who always gave the group a spark of enthusiasm. He was never at a loss for words. One week the group of catechumens went to the local homeless shelter to prepare and serve the evening meal. When we returned from this outing, Jack did not speak for about six weeks. We became concerned, but decided, at the urging of his sponsor, to al-low him to take the time he needed to break out of this si-lence.

A LIFE CHANGED FOREVER Finally Jack shared what was going on in his life.

He told us that at the homeless shelter, he was front and center. He had positioned himself so that he could ladle the sloppy joe mix onto the hamburger buns and hand the plate to the person in line. He said he was just loving the work, grasping the ladle, spooning the mixture onto the bun, then handing the plate to the next person, when all of a sudden a deep reality struck him. He said, “This is what my hands were meant to do.” Then he shared with us that many of the things his hands had done in his life were sinful and didn’t bring life to anyone. He told us again and again that what he was doing at the shelter was what his hands were created to do. Jack’s story is a great reminder to each of us on this feast. As people who regularly consume the Body and Blood of Christ, we are called to do what we were cre-ated to do: become Christ for one another. Today’s Readings: Genesis 14:18–20; Psalm 110:1–4; 1 Corinthians 11:23–26; Luke 9:11b–17 Copyright © 2006, World Library Publications. All rights reserved.

FED BY THE LORD Jesus’ words “This is my body” and “This cup is the new covenant in my blood” were only part of his table blessing. Jesus twice said: “Do this in remem-brance of me” (1 Corinthians 11:24, 25). This is the good news of today’s solemnity. Like the five thousand hungry souls, we are fed by our Lord. This is not food that satisfies for only a short time, until the next meal. It is food that lasts and changes us. It is food for sharing in much the same way as Melchizedek did when he brought bread and wine to the returning Abraham. As children of God’s reign, we are blessed to be able to receive and share God’s gift. And we do so in the way most appropriate to our state in life—as par-ents, children, husbands, wives, or religious. © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Unless Professor Einstein’s theory of relativity can be translated into any useful kind of time-travel, most of our clues about life in the early church will have to come from ancient letters and ancient prayer texts. A prayer text from a dusty library may yield, for example, an un-derstanding of what “presbyters” actually did. We have such a prayer from the early third century from the hand of Hippolytus of Rome. While our modern prayers de-rive a great deal from his, some of the practices of the ancient church have fallen away. In his day, bishops were chosen by the people, and the other bishops merely con-sented. Presbyters, by contrast, seem to have been cho-sen by the bishops. This makes sense, since it allowed the bishops to hand-pick their most trusted advisers. It seems that bishops were at first reluctant to share their presiding at the Eucharist with presbyters. In fact, by the time of the fourth-century church’s growth spurt in Rome, the bishop sent deacons out with fragments of the host from his Eucharist to drop into the chalices of the presbyters at the outlying eucharistic celebrations. We still have a vestige of this fermentum in the Mass today, a reminder of the early bishops’ desire to give a powerful sign of the unity of all celebrations of the Eucharist with their ministry, and a clue to their reluctance to delegate a sacramental ministry to the presbyters. —James Field, © Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

THE EUCHARIST Just as the bread, which is made from the earth, when God is invoked is no longer common bread but the Eucharist, both earthly and heavenly, so our bodies, after we have received the Eucharist, are no longer cor-ruptible, since they hold the hope of the resurrection. —St. Irenaeus
