Friendship In Christ — A Vision for the Consolidation of Parishes

WOW! - HOW GOD WORKS THAT “ALL MAY BE ONE” THIS WEEK I SPOKE WITH THE CHILDREN OF OUR SCHOOL about a man I know who went on vacation. He brought a beach chair and a book that he randomly picked from the shelf. Over these days the more he read, the more he discovered a story he wanted others to know. And the more he imagined how he would use his unique talents to tell it. Page by page, I like to imagine he sat there saying, “Wow!”, over and over again. What he learned about someone he didn’t

know fueled a passionate desire to tell others about this person, to share the energy and excitement that he found within himself.

This man on vacation was Lin-Manuel Miranda. I know him not because I’ve ever met him, but through others telling me about him — and by my remembering those experiences where I’ve found myself saying, “Wow!” Miranda is the prize-winning writer and actor in the Broadway musical Hamilton.

“I think of it as, What’s the thing that’s not in the world

that should be in the world?” Lin-Manuel Miranda, Playwrite & Actor

On the question, “What do we leave behind?”

I asked our children, “What did you do yesterday that made someone else say, ‘Wow!’?” “What will you do today?” Everyone of us has within us the ability to inspire others. I asked them, “When was the last time you said ‘Wow’?” “How did that experience change you life? Did you want to tell others?” Sadly, we all know what happens when we assume we know others. We don’t bother “to read the book”. We miss the story God wants us to know, often a moment of inspiration (grace) designed by God to bring the prize winning best out of us.

In the weeks to come we will continue here reporting on more of the details of the planning now underway for the consolidation of Our Lady of the Rosary and Holy Name of Jesus parishes. Parish leaders are working together on the pastoral plans and a budget for the coming year—always with an eye to the continuing long term presence of the Catholic Church in this part of North County.

I look forward to how our parish ministries will be enriched and expanded. I am grateful for the opportunity this consolidation gives us to develop more participation in parish organizations and activities. I expect to be surprised often by the inspiration of what I don’t know.

In the weeks, months, and years to come we must let ourselves be inspired. We already have every gift, talent, and resource we need—and the beginnings of a story that can inspire others far and wide to be one with us. We must open ourselves to and create moments of “Wow!”

Our Archdiocesan Appeal is an effective form of revenue sharing among parishes, insur ing the social outreach, charitable, and educational ministries of the Catholic Church in our community. In the past two years alone our parish and our school have benefited greatly from the Appeal receiving grants of over $550,000.

THE COURAGE TO LOVE for Pope Francis means doing something with all your heart or putting your heart into what you believe. When we do, our lives are an act of evangelization. Good news for other people! Even without our knowing it, they encounter Christ because we have the courage to love.

Thanks to all who have already made their gift or pledge in support of this year’s Appeal. For those who are still considering their level of support for the Appeal our parish volunteers will now attempt to contact you by phone or visit with you in person. If you are not able to take their call, please try to call back as soon as possible. Our callers will leave you a message letting you know who they are and why they’re calling.

You may also want to call Bruce or Ginny Saak (314-868-5183) who now serve as the Chairpersons for the Appeal in our parish. Please join me in thanking them and all the volunteers who have assisted them with the Appeal over the past three weekends.

We want to make sure that everyone has an opportunity to support the Appeal, so let us know if you have questions or if we can assist you in any way.

♫ “Those who sing pray twice.” ♫ - Attributed to St. Augustine NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME to join the Choir! The Easter Season is in full swing, so the music is joyful and the rehearsal pace is more relaxed than when preparing for Holy Week or Christmas. If you can match a pitch or someone has told you “you have a good voice!” and are high school age and up, you belong in the Choir. Consider using your talent and love of singing to enhance our parish liturgies. You will be happy you did - and happily welcomed! Also, if you know someone who sings well, encourage them to join, or better yet, join together! Give it a try.

Rehearsals are on Wednesdays at 7:00 pm. Contact: Theresa McWilliams by email [email protected] by phone (314) 869-8938 or

Missouri Catholic Conference ACTION ALERT The Missouri House passed a bill related to the State A+ Scholarship Program. As passed, SB 650 included an Amendment, offered by Representative Jay Barnes that would permit graduates of non-public schools to participate in the scholarship pro-gram. The bill now moves back to the Missouri Senate for further consideration. What You Can Do: Because amendments were added to SB 650 in the Missouri House, the full Senate must take up SB 650 for further considera-tion. The 2016 Legislative session ends in just two short weeks. Let your Senator know you support expanding the A+ Scholarship program to non-public school students!
