Celebrating Our Calling to Community

Our Parish—A Message of Salvation UNLESS WE ARE IN CLOSE COMMUNICATION with God through prayer, how will we know what God expects of us? Throughout 2015 across the Archdiocese there is a special focus on prayer—especially developing a daily routine of prayer. Why? Because prayer is the foundation of evangelization and good stewardship.

Prayerful people are more likely to invite others to get involved with our parish and involvement leads to a stronger sense of belonging. In turn, people who feel like they belong somewhere want to give more of themselves—insuring their own sense of belonging and that of others. They invest in something important for themselves and they want it for others. And all of this helps to guarantee that our parish can fulfill it fundamental reason for being here in the first place—to proclaim Jesus Christ as the Light of the Nations and the source of salvation for all peoples.

Here’s a simple Prayer Process that many Catholic in St. Louis are now putting into practice in order to become more a part of the mission of the Church, especially among those who are most in need of Good News.

1 Gratitude — Thank God for whatever you are grateful for today.

2 Awareness — Talk to God about the past 24 hours. What went well? What did you learn?

3 Significant Moments — Identify something you experienced today and explore what God might be saying to you in this event or person.

4 Peace — Ask God to forgive you for wrongdoing and give you peace.

5 Freedom — Speak to God about how you are being invited to change your life for the better.

6 Others — Pray for others and ask God to bless and guide them.

7 Quietly Pray the Our Father

Open your heart through prayer—every day, constantly, in good times and bad, and share this daily prayer process with your family, friends, and neighbors.

“The Christian community is, after all,

a community of women and men truly linked with humankind

and its history, bringing a message of salvation

intended for all people.”

Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World

2nd Vatican Council

Our Parish Giving Evidence of God “Where Is Their God?”

On Ash Wednesday the Prophet Joel (1st Reading) calls the People of God together for repentance and wonders why people should be asking, “Where is their God?” In other words, by the way we live as a community the presence and power of God ought to be clearly evident, easily found.

This is the Lenten question for us as a community of faith. If God is to be more evident to others through our parishioners then we must remember and celebrate that we are called to —

COMMUNITY

This Lent pray that the Spirit will help us to know how to come together, to know when and how to bring people in our families and neighborhoods closer to each other and to God—to a sense of belonging and “being connected”. When people are asking about us, “Where is their God?” true evidence of community is one of the best ways of insuring that the question gets asked less often.

Lord Jesus, help us to be well known for our sense of community.

Health Advisory

Your commitment to Mass is a sign of the vitality of our parish. However, for the health of our whole community, if you are not feeling well, be attentive to these recommendations:

Don’t Come To Church …

• With a fever—be fever free for 24 hrs. • When you’re not feeling well— achy, tired, sore throat, no energy • When you’re coughing and sneezing a

lot with a runny nose or headache

When You Do Come To Church …

• Use hand sanitizer at church entrances • With slight symptoms of cold or flu —

• Don’t take communion from the cup • Offer the sign of peace with a friendly

wave or simple bow

Thank you for your cooperation in taking responsibility for the health of our community. Remember , it’s sad to miss Mass when you’re sick or taking care of someone who’s sick, but not sinful.

10 OUT-OF-THE-BOX

IDEAS FOR LENT

♦ When shopping, buy only what you absolutely

need.

♦ 40 things in 40 days. Throw away or donate one thing from your home that you no longer need.

♦ 40 days of home organization. Everyday organ-ize one drawer, closet or…..

♦ When having a conversation, take time to listen to the other person.

♦ Keep your meals simple.

♦ Take time to be grateful for at least one thing a day.

♦ Say something nice to your children, husband or co-worker every day.

♦ Visit or call someone you know needs “a friend.”

♦ Replace 30 minutes of TV time with 30 minutes of devotion/prayer time.

♦ Try to be positive about life situations. These “out-of-the-box “ suggestions can only lead to one thing. A wonderful Easter and a whole new way of living. If we , as a community all practiced these ideas…..what a transformation would occur If all 10 seem overwhelming, , simply try doing a different one each day. Have a wonderful time of renewal this Lent. S. Rose, SSND. RN

Meet Life Program Sponsored by the Knights of Columbus This program—aka the Baby Bottle Program— is a statewide effort to help the Pro-Life goals. Our local Santa

Cruz Council of the Knights of Columbus will be participating in this program over the coming weeks.

The objective is to help provide ultra-sound machines to birth centers to discourage abortions. We feel that once an expectant mother sees the images of the small human in the pictures from their womb, the details in the developed child, they will change their minds on terminating the life.

The way this program works is to pass out baby bottles to serve as the collection receptacles (for financial donations), thus the name the Baby Bottle Program.

We are hoping for one of two levels of participation. The easiest level is to bring your donation to church and put it in a bottle at church. The other level is to take a bottle home with you to collect donations over the next couple of weeks.

You could also solicit from your neighbors, friends and family. Keep the bottle on the table, so when people visit, it becomes a topic of conversation, suggesting that their donation would be appreciated.

Baby Bottles With Donations should be returned to church on

Saturday / Sunday February 21st / 22nd, 2015

I’m grateful to John Jordan for taking the initiative to organize this program to our parish. I encourage your generosity in whatever ways might be possible for you to participate.
