Hail to the Life-giving Cross of the Lord

Hail to the Cross, the wooden scepter on which the blood of the lamb was shed. Hail to the Cross on which our Saviour was crucified, and He lifted His hands

and invited everyone. Hail to the Cross, the indispensable sign in the hands of the Highest like a decorated crown. Because of a tree, Adam was chased out of the paradise, and because of the blessed Cross, he returned to his rank once more. We ask the c o m p a s s i o n a t e Lord to grant us the forgiveness of our sins.

From the Coptic Liturgy

Hail to the Cross, the sign of victory that was given to Christians for strengthening . Hail to the Cross the tree, lifted up to the heavens, whose sweet-smelling branches give life to everyone, Hail to the Cross that was diligently sought by Queen Helen until she found it with the nails. Hail to the Cross that was put in the bitter water, which was rendered sweet to quench the thirst of the faithful. Hail to the Cross that deserved to be believed in by Is s a c t h e Samaritan and all who were with him. Hail to the Cross, the pride of the Christians, on which the Lord was crucified to save His people. Hail

Grandparents Day is celebrated this

Sunday

Joachim and Anne, who are the parents of the

Virgin Mary, and therefore the grandparents of Jesus. The greatest gift that you can give your grandparents is a visit or a call always being

attentive to their needs. Remember, grandparents will always ask about you first and listen intently to everything you have to say. They are never rushed or in a hurry to hear about your adventures; they

are there just for you.

Addressing the wife of a priest

The manner in which we use titles of address tends to

cause a great deal of confusion. It should be

remembered that titles of address are nothing more than courtesy titles. They

are polite ways of speaking to the wife of a priest. So, addressing Fr John’s wife

you would use the Ukrainian term Dobrodiyka Mostivsky

(Mrs. Mostivsky)

The New Saint of Mercy - Mother Teresa

On September 4, Pope Francis canonized Mother Teresa, whose life sent the world a single, urgent message: that love and caring are the most important things in life. Perhaps we can best understand why she is worthy of veneration and imitation by reflecting on some of her own words: “The biggest disease today is not leprosy or tuberculosis, but rather the feeling of being unwanted, uncared for and deserted by everybody. The greatest evil is the lack of love and charity, the terrible indifference toward one’s neighbour who lives at the roadside, assaulted by exploitation, corruption, poverty and disease. “Those who are a burden to society, who have lost all hope and faith in life, who have forgotten how to

smile and no longer know what it means to receive a little human warmth, a gesture of love and friendship—they turn to us to receive a little bit of comfort. If we turn our backs on them, we turn our backs on Christ. “Our love and our joy in serving must be in proportion to the degree to which our task is repugnant.” Our prayer today: Mother Teresa, Saint of Mercy, pray for us that we may truly see the image of God in the spiritually most deprived and disfigured of our brothers and sisters.

UKRAINE PREPARES FOR FINAL RUSSIAN INVASION

Ukraine’s President, Petro Poroshenko, reading the signs of Russian military build-up all along Ukraine’s borders and with the already-occupied territory of Crimea, spoke of Ukraine entering a state of total preparedness. He stated today, “The likelihood of escalation of the conflict remains very high. And we are not ruling out a full-scale Russian invasion. Today we have a sharp aggravation of the situation in Crimea and in the East. The situation in the East has changed significantly. In the last 10 day, the heavy artillery of the terrorists is firing at headquarters and bases 20-25 km behind the line of contact. If the escalation continues, by my decree mobilization will be announced and martial law declared. There is nothing more important than Ukraine, the independence of our country, our freedom and our democracy.”

[Personal observation: It is truly sad that the NATO nations, aside from their continuous almost bellicose language, really offer little support other than sanctions of questionable effectiveness. When push comes to shove – and every sign suggests that it will sooner than we think – what will be the fate not only of the country of Ukraine, but her citizens that have already suffered the bloodshed of millions due to the meddling of foreign powers that are really more interested in their own ends rather than the lives and souls of God’s People in Ukraine!]

Divine Liturgy is not Entertainment

We sometimes hear the complaint, “Church is boring.” The reason people feel that worship is boring is that usually when we go somewhere these days we expect to be entertained. Not long ago, a young boy talked me into playing video games with him. This 12 year old had plenty to choose from. The games were noisy, had blinking lights and strange sounds. This is entertainment to the max for kids his age. We played for two hours and he couldn’t get enough. Unlike video games or TV, our church services were never meant to be spellbinding, thrill-a-minute entertainment. Maybe we need to change our expectations. Again, we go to church to worship God. In contrast to the Video Game, this is a place to come to be quiet, to have our souls soothed. If we are looking for entertainment, the liturgical services likely will be boring. But if we have an attitude of thanksgiving and worship, like the one the

thankful leper had toward Christ, we will want to be close to Christ – and church is the place to be. If we’re there to give thanks and worship to God, we will find ourselves - in proximity to heaven itself. Some people say, “I don’t get anything out of church.” In fact, you do get something out of it. For openers you commune with God! You receive the Body and Blood of His beloved Son. You hear the Gospel (Good News) read and preached. You sing to Him angelic songs (replacing the angels themselves). You get to say “thank you” for His cleansing of your sins. Look, we come to church not first and foremost to get our needs met. We come to worship and praise God. If we’re there for selfish reasons, worship doesn’t make sense. But if we come to give thanks and glorify God, as the one leper did, it’s the most wonderful hour in the whole wide world. [from St. Anne’s Bulletin – Harrisburg, PA]
