When I first encountered the Gospel reading for today, I
was a bit taken back by the way Jesus treats Peter, who
objected when Jesus said he was going to die at the hands
of the Jewish hierarchy. It seemed to me that Peter was
only trying to be nice, that he was just “looking out” for
Jesus, wanting him not to be hurt in any way.
But Jesus calls him “Satan”, and tells Peter that he is an
“obstacle” to him. Is this any way to treat the man who was
to be the “rock” on whom the church is to be built?
The writer Elizabeth Nagel explains that to Jesus, Peter’s
words are a temptation to reject his Father’s plan for the
crucifixion, and that the cross was the very reason for his
coming to mankind in the first place.
But not only is the cross for Jesus, but it’s also for us. He
tells his disciples “Whoever wishes to come after me must
deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” These are
words we don’t really want to hear.
I remember a deacon saying he was willing to carry his
cross, but he was asking the Lord to make it out of
Styrofoam!
This year in particular, due to the pandemic, there has
been much suffering in world, and many are bearing heavy
crosses. The suffering caused by the illness itself,
business closings, unemployment, child care issues,
anxiety, fear and depression, are just some of the ways
people have been experiencing the cross in their lives.
Jesus wants us to unite those sufferings to his, so that he
can lead us through them to the resurrection, his victory
over sin and death and the pain we all experience.
What we remember today is that we have a God who
understands our suffering, because he went through it too.
Only love can make sense of suffering, can give it
meaning, and we know that God loves us, no matter what
happens around us.
I think a good way to alleviate some our anxiety and worry
in these troubling times is to focus on assisting others with
their burdens, directing our minds away from our own
problems to help someone else with theirs, even if it’s
simply praying for them.
Finally, we can and should pray to
Jesus on the cross, but what about
the one who stood by him through
all his suffering and was with him at
the foot of the cross-his mother
(and ours), Mary.
Please consider saying the rosary
frequently, for an end to the
pandemic, and for peace in our
country and throughout the world.

Deacon Joe Vannucci
Holy Family Parish
A Short Note from Father Kevin –
I thank Deacon Joe this week and all the clergy and staff
for sharing in these bulletin columns. I hope that it is
helping all our parishioners to get to know all of them
better. I also wanted to share something that I have been
thinking and praying about for some time now, with all of
you. That is the gratitude I have for all of you, our faithful
parishioners. First, I thank all those who have been
supportive of all of our procedures for return to Mass in
Church. Wearing masks during Mass, keeping social
distance, getting temperature scanned, and following all
usher directions. I know some don’t agree with all these
protocols nor want to do these things, but I hear regularly
from parishioners and visitors who share with me how
much they appreciate all of our efforts to keep them and
their families safe. Also, I wanted to share with everyone
how thankful that how generous our offertory and,
especially Parish Share, collections have been, even over
these summer months. I know some of our families have
lost jobs or income in various ways, but so far, we have
been able to keep all of our Holy Family Parish staff
employed and all of our bills paid. Dave Hall has been
working diligently to reduce many of our expenses at the
same time. We remain financially healthy as a
Parish. Thank you all for all of your safety efforts for your
neighbors in the pews and for your faithful contributions
and prayers for our Holy Family community!
In Christ’s love, Father Kevin

SCRIPTURE READINGS FOR THE 22ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
READING I JER 20:7-9
You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped; you were
too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an
object of laughter; everyone mocks me. Whenever I speak, I
must cry out, violence and outrage is my message; the word
of the LORD has brought me derision and reproach all the
day. I say to myself, I will not mention him, I will speak in his
name no more. But then it becomes like fire burning in my
heart, imprisoned in my bones; I grow weary holding it in, I
cannot endure it.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM PS 63:2, 3-4, 5-6, 8-9
R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
O God, you are my God whom I seek;
for you my flesh pines and my soul thirsts
like the earth, parched, lifeless and without water.
R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
Thus have I gazed toward you in the sanctuary
to see your power and your glory,
For your kindness is a greater good than life;
my lips shall glorify you.
R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
Thus will I bless you while I live;
lifting up my hands, I will call upon your name.
As with the riches of a banquet shall my soul be satisfied,
and with exultant lips my mouth shall praise you.
R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
You are my help,
and in the shadow of your wings I shout for joy.
My soul clings fast to you;
your right hand upholds me.
R. My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.

READING 2 ROM 12:1-2
I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God,
to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to
God, your spiritual worship. Do not conform yourselves to this
age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that you
may discern what is the will of God, what is good and pleasing
and perfect.
R. Alleluia, alleluia. MT 11:29AB
Take my yoke upon you, says the Lord,
and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart.

R. Alleluia, alleluia.
GOSPEL MT 16:21-27
Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to
Jerusalem and suffer greatly from the elders, the chief
priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day
be raised. Then Peter took Jesus aside and began to rebuke
him, “God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to
you.” He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan!
You are an obstacle to me. You are thinking not as God
does, but as human beings do." Then Jesus said to his
disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny
himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever
wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life
for my sake will find it. What profit would there be for one to
gain the whole world and forfeit his life? Or what can one give
in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with
his angels in his Father’s glory, and then he will repay all
according to his conduct.”
LAS VIRTUDES TEOLOGALES (quinta parte).
Fe, esperanza y caridad. Fueron infundidas por Dios en nuestra alma
el día del bautismo.
G) La caridad no pasará jamás.

HOLY FAMILY SCHOOL GIFT CARD (SCRIP) PROGRAM
Updates are being made to our Scrip Gift Card Program to simplify it. Once we sell all the current inventory of gift cards
we will be offering ONLY Giant Eagle/Get Go ($25 / $50 / $100), Community Market ($25 / $20) , Shop N Save ($50) ,
Speedway ($25) and Sheetz ($25). Also, starting after Labor Day, we will offer these same cards at certain Masses
(which we will list in future bulletins). Cards for additional vendors not listed may be purchased online.

What is the Scrip Program?
As a loyalty program, the parish buys a bulk of cards encourages purchase through our Scrip program and the parish gets
a percentage of the sale of the cards directly from the store or company card. The funds raised entirely support our Holy
Family School. However, since the Holy Family Parish financially supports Holy Family School, this support reduces the
parish’s financial subsidy to the school and thus saves the parish by participating. All parishioners and school families are
encouraged to take advantage of this program to raise funds and save our community resources. The more that use it, the
better it works. You may delegate the funds to a certain school family or apply it to the general fund.
This is a great opportunity to do your shopping and still be able to support our school. NOTE: The value of the card doesn’t
change with the reimbursement to the school
Who can participate in this program?
Participation in this program is for parishioners, school families, friends of parishioners or school families.
Ways to use Gift Cards
These cards are just like any other gift card. You can use these cards for your everyday shopping or as gifts. Also, the
Giant Eagle cards can be used at GetGo equally or also to purchase other vendor’s gift cards at a Giant Eagle store. Use
your Giant Eagle card to purchase those gift cards and you will receive fuel perks.
It’s a win/win/win!
Questions? If you have any questions or issues on this program, please contact Colleen at the
school at (412) 793-4580.

Volunteers Needed
Holy Family Parish SOS
(Serving Our Seniors) Ministry
Jesus calls us to care for the elderly and give them our
greatest respect. The Holy Family Parish SOS Ministry
Home and Transportation and Services (HaTS) is a
volunteer based service that provides non-medical services
that assist and aid Holy Family senior parishioners that are
55 years of age and older. Our mission is to help our seniors
so that they can remain living in their homes and
communities and remain independent and healthy.
Assistance may include transportation to medical
appointments, caregiver relief, friendly visits, minor home
repairs, help around the house, minor yard work, errands,
shopping, etc. The SOS COVID-19 protocol prevents SOS
volunteers from performing services within recipients’ homes.
The SOS HaTS Ministry needs volunteers to assist us in
providing these services to Holy Family senior parishioners.
The amount of time that you spend per week can vary
between 0 to 3 hours or more-whatever you prefer.
However, you can be involved as much as you want because
you always have the option to accept a recipient request or
not. This will provide our seniors with comfort and help when
their family members cannot be there.
If you would like to be an SOS Volunteer,
simply call the Home and Transportation
Services at the Rectory
(412-793-4511, ext-107) or
Barb at 724-327-3996.

Did you know that you can register to attend Masses a week or more ahead of time? We post two weeks of daily
and weekend Masses on our website to give you the opportunity to plan your schedule ahead as you like.
Signing up ahead of time is recommended due to social distancing limits on the number of people who can be in
the church at one time. On our website, go to the “Mass Times” link and scroll down to find the links for registering.
It is real simple to register! Just enter your name, e-mail address, phone number and answer a couple questions.
You can even register for a number of Masses all at one time versus one by one! And if you don’t have access to
the internet, just call the Holy Family Parish office and someone will help to sign you up to attend Mass.

On Mission Prayer
Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! endow us with your gifts of courage, collaboration, and
compassion. Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and his Church through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. Raise up
selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and with care. May we the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver,
Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties be sustained and strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to
love Jesus and to live Jesus. Hear this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear Blessed
Mother, under the mantle of her love. Amen.
