2018 ARCHBISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL Next weekend, June 9 - 10, is Gift Commitment Weekend throughout the Archdiocese for the 2018 Archbishop’s Annual Appeal - - Our Faith, Our Future.

This is an important moment in the Appeal to ensure its success, and at all Masses there will be a brief 8-minute video that highlights, in a very personal way, some stories of your contributions at work in the lives of others, furthering the work of the gospel.

This outreach can only continue thanks to OUR collective support of the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal. So, if you’ve not already made a contribution, please complete a Gift Envelope before Mass and place it in the collection basket.

If you are making your 2018 gift for the first time, or perhaps increasing your 2018 gift, please accept our sincere appreciation.

Last year more than 42,000 households participated. Please help us achieve or even surpass that number of supporting households this year. Your support is vital, no one can replace you.

Thank you!

REFLECT In our modern times, symbol can seem to have lost its value. The most recognizable "signs" are ones we see on the road or the branding in advertisements. The logos for major companies don't do much more than perk our interest or disdain. They surely don't deliver on their promises for our lives to be happier, healthier, and easier. On this feast of Corpus Christi, we hear the account of the Last Supper. This was Passover, an ancient sign of the covenant of Moses. The Hebrew people celebrated God's providential care for His people. To the listening disciples, Jesus makes a very bold claim. "This is my blood of the covenant." At the time of the first Passover -- the redemption of the Hebrew people from slavery to the Egyptians -- the blood of the sacrificial lamb was spread on the lintels of the doorpost. Tomorrow, some of the disciples would witness the blood of the new covenant spread across the wood of the cross. Christ's Body and Blood are more than a sign. They are a sacrament. In the sacrament, the sign makes real what it signifies. More than ritual, a sacrament enacts truth of the covenantal love of God and His promise of fidelity. It's a promise God keeps. The same bread and wine of that first Holy Thursday liturgy becomes -- throughout the centuries and until the end of time -- the very Body and Blood of Christ. On this feast, we celebrate the unfailing covenantal love of our God. As you partake in the Eucharist today, and next Sunday, and the Sunday after that, remember that you receive neither a meaningless sign nor an empty offer. You receive God Himself, as He fulfills His promise to remain with us always.

ENFIELD YOUTH SERVICES AND ST. BERNARD SCHOOL COLLABORATE ON RADIO SHOW

Enfield Youth Services' mission is to enhance positive youth development, where youth, families, and community can grow together. One of the Youth Council's regular undertakings is hosting a bi-monthly radio show out of Asnuntuck Community College. According to their website, they "offer the best local interviews and a synopsis of what's going on in the Town of Enfield."

They recently interviewed members of the St. Bernard School community. Listeners were able to learn about what makes St. Bernard School a special place; all about the many extra-curricular activities offered, such as robotics, drama, basketball, soccer, band, crafts and more; the benefit of wearing a school uniform; the benefit of having kindergarten through 8th grade in one building; and financial aid, among other things. There is even music and public service announcements as part of the show. One of the members of the Youth Council, and an alumna of St. Bernard School, Aurelie Barry, was just named as Valedictorian of Enfield High School!

To listen to a recording of the St. Bernard interview, go to the school website at sbsenfield.org and click on the link provided. Normally, shows are broadcast on 107.7 FM (WACC.)

(L to R): Vicki Mitchell (St. Bernard School), Rebekah Vick (St. Bernard School), Josh Desjarlais (St. Bernard School), Andrea Mashiak (Enfield Youth Services), Adam Rivers (Operations Manager, WACC), and Nadeen, Angelina, and Wen Bing, all from the Youth Council.

Rebekah Vick and Josh Desjarlais are happy to answer questions during the interview.

A 'TEE-RIFIC' TIME AT ST. BERNARD SCHOOL GOLF OPEN

The 12th Annual St. Bernard School Golf Open was held at Twin Hills Country Club in Longmeadow, Massachusetts. 140 golfers enjoyed a barbecue lunch, raffles, a silent auction and dinner, in addition to the camaraderie and challenges of the golf course. There were several "specialty holes," with a chance to win prizes such as free braces, a spa, a year of free tuition at the school, golf clubs, and even a new car!

The golf committee, headed by Kristen Frost, did a great job making this event a huge success, and they are very grateful to all of the generous sponsors who contributed to this success.

This year's Golf Open was dedicated to Michael Mongillo (1973 - 2018,) a steadfast supporter of SBS and a longtime player in the tournament. He is sorely missed and remembered by the school community.

Principal Charlene Mongillo (2nd from right) helps with registration and raffle sales.

Committee head Kristen Frost reads a "golfer's prayer" before the noon shotgun.

Carts started rolling at noon, full of happy and hopeful golfers on a beautiful day!

CANDY BAR SALE!

Our St. Jeanne Jugan Youth Group is having a candy bar sale on June 9th and 10th after all Masses at Holy Family Church and St. Bernard Church to fundraise for their Steubenville trip. Why should you buy a candy bar to help our Parish youth attend the Steubenville Youth Conference? The answer is “revealed” in this year’s Steubenville Conference theme:

REVEALED

“In this way the love of God was revealed to us: God sent his only Son into the world so that we might have life through him.” 1 John 4:9

We live in a world where there are voices shouting at us from all sides, trying to tell us who we are and who we aren’t, who we should be and who we shouldn’t be. If we pay too much attention to these voices, it won’t be long before we forget our true identity altogether.

But amidst all the noise is our loving Father, who wants to make Himself known to us and speak truth about who we are. God’s love is deeper and His plan for our lives is greater than anything the world has to offer – will we allow Him to reveal it to us?

This summer, over 50,000 Catholic teens across North America will participate in 25 Steubenville Youth Conferences, and we want you to be one of them! Come experience the love of God in a new and more profound way. He has so much in store for you.

Let’s help our Youth Group experience the love and revelation of God!
