MISSION STATEMENT Holy Family Catholic Church is a spiritually and socially active parish. Rooted in the Word of God and nourished by the Eucharist, we cele-brate the life of our Lord Jesus Christ by proclaiming the Good News and providing spiritual growth, support and service with love. Founded by Italian immigrants a century ago, today our parish continues the tradition of extending a loving, caring and affirming welcome to all who join us as we Continue Our Journey of Faith.

6th Sunday of Easter C - 2019

My brothers and sisters in the Lord!

In today’s Gospel we encounter the disciples at a dark time. They simply could not comprehend why God might allow their Messiah to be killed before His mission was fulfilled. Their hopes of a glorious future were crushed and nothing made sense to them. To them it felt that the door of hope had been slammed shut in their face. They were looking so long at the

closed door that they did not see the glorious possibility opening up before them. Jesus tried to patiently explain this to them. The Holy Spirit was going to be their constant companion, bringing His teaching to mind, helping them to understand and comprehend it. Jesus was not only preparing a place for them in heaven, but He was preparing a place within them for Himself and the Father to make their home.

St. John’s Gospel, which was written in Greek, uses a particular word for the Holy Spirit: the word Paraclete. Literally, it means “called to one’s side.” God’s Spirit is the patient teacher at our side, bringing enlightenment, helping us to make sense of events in our lives. It transforms us as people, calming and sanctifying. Jesus speaks of it as a “shalom,” a Hebrew greeting which means more than peace. It conveys a sense of well-being, of things “starting to come together.” This is Jesus’ parting gift to His disciples.

We have all heard the story of Helen Keller, one of the most famous Americans of the twentieth century. Her work as an advocate for peace and human rights is proudly remembered. These words of hers sum up the message of today’s Gospel: “When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but so often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which has been opened for us.” Helen knew what this felt like. Her illness as a baby left her both deaf and blind. She would bite and kick in frustration. Her family hired a young woman, Annie Sullivan, to be her companion, even though Annie was almost blind herself. Patiently she would place an object into Helen’s hand and trace the name of the object in her other hand. Even though she was uncomprehending, Annie persisted and remained constantly at her side to calm and encourage her. Annie remained the ever-patient teacher, encourager and friend. Through the touch of running water, Helen began realizing that everything had a name and she began learning words.

A lot has been written about the life of Helen Keller and her companion, as well as films and TV dramas. One of them called, “The Miracle Continues,” seems like a good title for today’s Gospel. People with disabilities continue to find inspiration and support from their friends as well as to discover strength and resources within themselves. As we become aware of the Spirit of Jesus at our side and at home within us, the miracle continues for all of us. Life may seem very dark and confusing at times, we might even feel closed in. Patiently, however, the Spirit traces those words of Jesus into our hearts and minds, helping us to make sense of the events in our lives, shaping us to fulfil our potential as God’s own holy people. God’s Word, dwelling deep within, changes us until it is Christ Himself whom people see in us.

We, too, are called to the sacred work of being a companion to others, to be at the side of suffering people as advocates for those who cannot speak up for themselves; as encouragers to the despairing, guides to the lost and comforters to those who are hurting. It requires us to keep trying when people give up on themselves and to forgive when they seem ungrateful. This is how Jesus loves. And this is why we must allow all He teaches to become part of who we are. He tells us today, “If you love me, you will keep my Word.”

Peace, Fr. Joe

The Final Day of The Great Mission

During this Easter season we celebrated the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. This event compels us, as Christians, to announce this glorious Good News to the whole world. Many Catholics throughout the world have responded by embarking on a Great Mission to announce the Gospel to the whole world in the streets and public spaces. Our Holy Father Pope Francis has always encouraged the faithful to go to the public squares to announce the Gospels, announcing the love of Christ to everyone and the good news that death has been overcome and the gates of Heaven are now open! Here in the Archdiocese of Newark as well, many of our brothers and sisters in Christ have gone out to public parks and streets to announce this Gospel. In Nutley, parishioners proclaimed, “Christ risen!” on five consecutive Sundays. We conclude today, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Join us near the playground in Yanticaw Park, just off Centre Street. Brothers and sisters, there is no greater news than to announce the love of God and Jesus Christ’s victory over death, and eternal life being offered freely to all. Everyone is invited to attend and I encourage you to pray that this mission produces much spiritual fruit.

The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark invites all parents who have suffered the death of a child of any age, by any means & at any time to attend Emmaus Ministry: A One Day Retreat for Grieving Parents on Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Notre Dame RC Church, 359 Central Avenue, North Caldwell, NJ. This full-day retreat affords bereaved parents the opportunity to join together in a caring, spiritual setting for prayer, witnesses, discussion, fellowship and Mass. Please register ASAP at https://www.emfgp.org/registration/ as space is limited. For information, please contact Lauren Egan at 973-497-4327 or [email protected]

We are looking for people to volunteer at the above retreat to help out on the hospitality committee. Volunteers are needed to help with serving the

Parishioners currently utilizing WeShare electronic giving must discontinue using that company and enroll with ParishGiving.

This is mandatory. We have tried to make the transition as seamless as possible. First, go to our website (www.holyfamilynutley.org) and click on the link to ParishGiving. You can then establish your account and set up your annual donations in a matter of minutes. Then sign into your account on WeShare and print out all your year-to-date donations for 2018 tax filing purposes as ParishGiving can only provide a statement for donations made through them. At that point, call WeShare at 800-950-9952 and tell them to cancel your donations going forward and e-mail a confirmation of the cancellation to you. And that’s it - - you’re good to go! For those new to the service, simply click on the link on the website and establish your account. It’s that easy.
