Cathedral or Basilica? What’s the difference?
It’s a large, extravagant church. How do you know if it’s a cathedral or a basilica? What’s the difference?
The easy answer is that a cathedral is the bishop’s church while a basilica is the pope’s church.
The word cathedral comes from the Latin word cathedra, which means seat. It’s the “parish” of the bishop, in a way, and therefore the central church of a diocese. There is only one cathedral in each diocese.
A diocese can have multiple basilicas, on the other hand. These are churches which, for any number of reasons (architectural style, historic importance, etc.) are given the honorable title by the Holy Father and, in a sense, become the pope’s church in that area.

Fr. Bill Cantrell is leading a series of four sessions
related to his work with the Department of Veterans
Affairs. The sessions will be held on Wednesdays
after the 12 Noon Mass November 13 and 20 and
December 4 and 11 and we are asking for a class size
of 12- 15. There will be a sign up sheet for those inter-
ested, located in the Atrium. The content invites
participants to consider how faith communities can
create a welcoming spiritual home for both Veterans
and those who may be suffering from various types of
mental health related problems. While intended to be
educational, emphasis is placed on the discussion after
viewing a brief 20 minute video. It is important for
those who wish to attend to be able to attend all four
sessions. Your participation and feedback will contrib-
ute to a National effort to involve Faith Communities
in the care and support of both Veterans and those
struggling with mental health problems. For more in-
formation contact Fr. Cantrell at [email protected].
