Years ago Tina Turner, a famous

singer, sang a song called,

“What’s love got to do with it.”

She referred to love as nothing

more than an unbridled emotion.

If we think of love in this way

then she is right; what’s love got to do with it. But this is

not the type of love Jesus speaks of in the gospel. The

singer was addressing the Greek word for love called

‘Eros’. This type of love is a deep felt emotion of attrac-

tion. A deep feeling within us desiring to possess the oth-

er. Jesus is speaking of a much deeper love than Eros. He

is speaking of love as ‘Agape’. The deepest and long last-

ing love.

“It was not you who chose me, but I who chose you

and appointed you to go and bear fruit that will remain,

so that whatever you ask the Father in my name he may

give you. This I command you: love one another." John 15

This type of love is the servant love for which each of us is

created. But even this type of love can lead us astray and

ultimately to disaster if it is not used through submission to

another. This is why Jesus says in today’s gospel that if we

remain in him and he in us then we will grow in sacrificial

love of neighbor. It is this type of love in which we die to

self for the other. ‘There is no greater love than to lay

down one’s life for another.’

The richer and more fulfilled we can be is when we grow

in understanding and accepting the reality that it is Jesus

who chose us, taught us to love and through the Holy Spirit

guides us in the ways of love. In the end this type of love,

Agape, is everything both in this life and the next.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Prayer shawl ministry is a group of dedicated parishioners who knit or

crochet prayer shawls to give to people going through an illness, a death

in the family, homebound parishioners, or anyone in need of comfort. If

you or someone you know has need of a shawl, please take one. They are

available in the church and in the Parish Office. If you would like to find

out more about this ministry, contribute supplies or money, or even join

us in making the prayer shawls, please contact Karen Litzinger in the of-

fice at 746-1454 or Jolie Ewens at 775-6149.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the

dinner at the Northlands Rescue Mission on

Tuesday, April 24, a success (servers, those

who brought desserts, and Black Gold who do-

nated the potatoes). The residents always enjoy

the roast beef dinner with all the trimmings

served by loving hands. It is enjoyable for all

and we appreciate all the help.
