Peter, originally named Simon, was given the name Cephas, or Peter, (which means ‘Rock’), by Jesus, because he would become the rock upon which Christ would build His Church. Peter was the first to recognize that Jesus was the Messiah, and pledged his fidelity to Christ unto his death. In Peter, though, we also clearly see his humanness. His bold personality led him to some hasty actions, such as betraying Jesus during His passion, and losing faith when walking on water. Yet Jesus chose this man to shepherd God’s flock! What hope this should bring to us all, as we see that Christ understands and accepts us for our human weaknesses! Peter was crucified upside-down, because he claimed he was not worthy to die in the same manner as his Lord. Among many things, Peter is the patron saint against frenzy, fever, and for longevity. Paul, originally known as Saul, was a Jewish Pharisee who zealously persecuted Christians in Jerusalem. He and Jesus never crossed paths, until he was on his way to Damascus to persecute the Christian community there. He was blinded and fell off his horse as the Risen Christ called to him and asked, “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Upon his arrival in Damascus, Paul was baptized and regained his sight, spending the remainder of his life preaching the Gospel and converting the Gentiles. Paul also is patron saint for many things, including writers, public relations and against snakes.

Did You Know? Don’t just rely on “reputation” of summer programs, but seek information

Sometimes parents rely on the reputation of a particular summer program from past yearsto determine whether they allow their children to participate. These historical perspectivesfrom other parents and young people should always be a factor to consider in the deci-sion making process, but if you find that the monitoring and screening processes in placeare inadequate to assure your child’s safety, do not let the “reputation” of the program orits apparent success be the guiding principle for whether your children are allowed to par-ticipate. For more information, visit: http://archla.org/safeguard “Summer Safety Tips canhelp prevent Sexual Abuse, Virtus,” or call the Archdiocesan Victims Assistance Ministry,(213) 637-7650.

SACRED HEART OF JESUSEarlier this week, on Friday June 27th, we cele-brated the Feast Day of the Sacred Heart ofJesus. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is a movablefeast celebrated “9 days after PentecostSunday”. Devotions have been made to theSacred Heart of Jesus since the 11th century;however it wasn’t until August 31, 1670 that thefirst Feast was celebrated, due to the efforts ofSt. John Eudes, in Rennes, France. The sourceof our modern celebration was an apparition ofJesus to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque on June16, 1675, in which Jesus requested that theFeast of the Sacred Heart be celebrated in repa-ration for the ingratitude of humanity for the sacri-fice that Christ had made for them. In 1856, Pope Pius IX extended the Feastto the universal Church, to be celebrated 19 days after Pentecost Sunday.Pope Benedict wrote that the “heart” indicates the center of the person, whereone’s sentiments and intentions dwell – thus in the heart of Jesus, we adoreGod’s love for humanity, His will for universal salvation, and His infinite mercy. The deepest longing of Christ’s heart is that we discover how much He lovesus; however it is as though we are afraid to let ourselves be loved uncondition-ally by God, who asks for nothing, but gives all. In the 20th century, Jesusappeared to St. Faustina with the words, “I have opened my heart as a livingsource of mercy, from it all souls draw life… my heart burns with the fire ofcompassion for sinners”. According to Benedict, the best way to expressdevotion to the Sacred Heart is to spend time in the presence of the Lord inEucharistic Adoration.Pope Francis is even more encouraging, telling us that the Lord is alwayswatching us with mercy. “Let us not be afraid to approach Him! He has a

The 50th Anniversary of the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy: A Parish Celebration © 2013 Archdiocese of Chicago: Liturgy Training Publications. Orders: 1-800-933-1800. Written by Kyle Lechtenberg. Text from the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy © 1982, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation (ICEL). Imprimatur granted by the Reverend Monsignor John F. Canary, Vicar General, Archdiocese of Chicago on June 5, 2013.

“The faith of those taking

part is nourished” (Constitution on the Sacred

Liturgy, 33)

W e are created by and yearn to grow

ever deeper in communion with God. One of the

joys of the gift and challenge of free will is that we must grow in that communion. It doesn’t always come naturally. We believe that, above all else, the liturgy is “the worship of the divine majesty” (33). Yet it is a gift of God that, in praising God, we grow. We find nourishment in giving ourselves in praise back to our Creator. Is this not also true, if to a more limited extent, in other relationships? When we love and honor those in our lives who are in need, do we not grow in love? In worship, we honor God with external and internal prayers, songs, or actions, and in doing so, we create space for God to nourish the recesses of our hearts.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION SPONSORS NEEDEDWill you sponsor the formation and religious education of a child? Families come toReligious Education with hope and motivation for their child's formation, but not all ourfamilies can afford to pay the tuition cost ($125). Please consider sponsoring anRE child. All prayers help fulfill our mission of echoing our faith to build disciples ofJesus Christ.Financial donations benefit a child in need. Last year we raised $2500 that was dis-persed into the community and helped over 15 children participate in RE, many ofwhom were preparing to receive the sacraments. MINISTRY OF THE ARTSAround TownHeaven and Earth: Art of Byzantium from Greek CollectionsThrough August 25, 2014Getty VillaByzantine artists drew from pagan and early Christian foundations to fashion the opulent

and deeply spiritual world of Byzantium (A.D. 330 - 1453.) The establishment ofChristianity as the state religion inspired the creation of luminous icons, textiles, archi-tectural sculptures, frescoes, and mosaics to adorn basilicas throughout the empire.

The Ministry of the Arts’ mission is to develop, implement and sustain a holistic arts pro-gram that is an integral part of Holy Family Church and creates an enriched, vibrantenvironment that deepens people's connection to God.

ENVIRONMENTAL MINISTRYOn the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker in2013, Pope Francis said, “Work is funda-mental to the dignity of the person.” But incountless places around the globe, workingconditions and organizational practices dovery little to honor the inherent dignity ofworkers. Now is the perfect time to make or renew acommitment to purchasing fair trade prod-ucts. When you buy items that are fair tradecertified, you support:● Safe and healthy work conditions● Payment of a fair price for the

exchange of goods● An end to child labor and forced

labor● Respect for the environment● Skills and growth for marginalized

producersThe simple act of choosing fair trade prod-ucts creates opportunities for the economi-cally disadvantaged, allowing them to moveout of poverty and into self-sufficiency,according to the World Fair TradeOrganization. The words of the Holy Fathercontinue to resonate: “Work, to use animage, ‘anoints’ with dignity, fills us with dig-nity, makes us similar to God who hasworked and still works, who always acts. …I (make) a strong appeal that the dignity andsafety of the worker always be protected.”Curious about fair trade products? OUTREACH

MISSION HAITIIndependenceWe continue our shorthistory of Haiti to betterappreciate Haiti’s currentturmoil.Throughout the 18thcentury, we have seenthe development of threebasic classes of inhabi-tants on SaintDomingue, now knownas Haiti: the whites, theblacks, and the mulat-toes. The white people,a small minority, had allthe power, controllinggovernment positions and owning most of the land. The blacks, an overwhelmingmajority, were the slaves who were treated very harshly by their estate landlords. Themulattoes, comprising about 5% of the population, were of mixed blood but severelyconstrained by the white authorities and forbidden to hold most professional jobs. When the French Revolution occurred in France in the late 1700’s, the mulattoesbecame restless. Protests led to the execution of a leading mulatto. Slaves soon joinedthe revolt and staged their own rebellion; they were led by Francois Toussaint. TheSpanish colonists on the eastern portion of the island supported the revolt, hoping toregain control of the entire island. The British also supported the rebellion, looking for afoothold on Saint Domingue. Both Spain and Britain sent in armies. The French, weakened by the revolution at home, decided to make peace with theslaves and grant them their freedom. In turn they asked the slaves to stave off theSpanish and British armies. Toussaint with his slaves joined the French army and heldoff the invaders. By 1795, the Spaniards admitted defeat and ceded the entire island tothe French. Toussaint declared himself the President for Life of Hispaniola and bannedslavery. The French did not look kindly at Toussaint usurpation of power. Napoleon Bonapartesent a large army under Napoleon’s brother, Charles Leclerc, to subdue Toussaint. In1802 Leclerc defeated Toussaint and sent him to prison where he died the followingyear. Leclerc then restored French control. However, this did not last long. Jean-Jacques Dessalines, one of Toussaint’s generals, took control of Toussaint’s followersand continued the revolt. Meanwhile, a surprising ally, yellow fever, decimated Leclerc’sarmy and Dessalines defeated the French forces on November 18, 1803.Dessalines, a former African slave, declared himself Emperor Jacques I of Hispaniola. The slaves had successfully gained their independence, for the first time in history. The Mission Haiti Committee

BLESSED CAESAREACHRIST CHURCH DISCIPLES ELIJAH FATHER GOD HEAVENLY JESUS

KEYS KINGDOM LIVING PETER PHILIPPIPROPHETSREGION ROCKSIMON SON

CALL TO PRAYERBegin by calling upon God: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolySpirit, Amen. Let us pause for a moment, and listen attentively to this week’s passage.

THE WORD OF GODMatthew 16:13-19 When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi he askedhis disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Somesay John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “Youare the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed areyou, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, butmy heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I willbuild my Church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I willgive you the keys to the Kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall bebound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”

FAITH SHARINGChildren: Who do you say that Jesus is?Teens: Describe a time when you felt that God had revealed some knowledge orinsight to you. How did it feel to know that God was communicating with youdirectly?Adults: By correctly answering his “Jeopardy Question”, Simon was awarded notonly a new name (Peter), but was given the “Keys to the Kingdom of Heaven” andbecame the leader of the Church. What questions is God asking you? How areyou answering? In grace: In today’s Gospel, Peter became the rock upon which our Church wasbuilt. What role, or roles, do you feel that you are called to play in God’sKingdom? At Holy Family?

Called to LeadershipJacquiline Wagner’s vibrancy and energy, as well as her belief inthe importance of women in leadership roles, have helped her findher niche at Holy Family! As an Employment Law attorney with the LA Unified SchoolDistrict, Jacquiline represents employers in sexual harassment anddiscrimination cases. She believes that current employer vulnera-bility to law suits actually presents an opportunity for employersand employees to find a common ground of respect, communica-tion, and behavioral standards, a perspective she shares throughpublic speaking and webinars.Married for 8 years, Jacquiline and Karey De Leon have 2 “gor-geous children”, one starting Kindergarten this fall at Holy FamilySchool. She is proud of her family and her egalitarian marriage, in which her husbandencourages her independence.Jacquiline’s attraction to Holy Family is related to her life-changing experience in 5thgrade. As a traditional cradle-Catholic, she felt called to be an altar server. After beingdenied by the pastor, who told her that girls were not allowed to be altar servers, she wasdetermined to anchor herself as a lay leader in the Church. She eventually found thisopportunity at Holy Family. For Jacquiline, volunteering at Holy Family is an essential expression of her faith. “Ibelieve we are the hands of Christ in serving those in need. Servant leadership also keepsme included in the nucleus of my parish. This is significantly important to me.” Her serv-ice began on the Board of Toddler Co-Op, enabling her young daughter to learn her faithin a language she could understand. As new, enthusiastic parishioners, she and Kareyalso chaired part of the parish’s Fall Festival. Shifting focus to Sunday Preschool, Kareyspearheaded the Spanish Immersion Program. Jacquiline’s next project will be as HolyFamily’s Project Coordinator for the Get on the Bus program. “It is such an honor toserve children in our community,” she adds. “I am truly blessed.”Jacquiline views Cambria as the future of the Church. She believes Cambria is able touniquely connect and inspire people as a layperson. Her strength lies not only in her spir-ituality but also in her executive leadership, a trait necessary for young girls to appreciateand emulate. “My parents gave me my faith in a language I could understand. This is the legacy thatHoly Family provides its parishioners and future generations. Hopefully, the CatholicChurch will keep pace with our evolved leadership.” Jacquiline Wagner.
