Sermon The Rev Boyd Evans
(A period of silent reflection follows the sermon.)
*Hymn Oh, Praise the Gracious Power
*Nicene Creed BCP p 358
We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from
Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one
Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For
us and for our salvation he came down from heaven; by the
power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin
Mary and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under
Pontius Pilate; He suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the
Scriptures; He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right
hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the
living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who
proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the
Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the
Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We
look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to
come. Amen.
*Prayers of the People
Called together in the Spirit’s embrace, let us pray for the mending of God’s
world. (Brief silence)
O God, we pray for the church. Set its people free from the bondage of slavery to sin. Deliver us into the freedom and courage of service in your kingdom. Hear
us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for the earth and its creatures. We pray for endangered species and all
wildlife. We pray for human life and the earth we depend upon. Sustain life, and
guide our stewardship of all that you have made. Hear us, O God. Your mercy
is great.
We pray for these United States as we celebrate the founding of our nation. We
pray for the president, the Congress, and all local elected officials and staffs.
Grant wisdom and hearts for justice, that all our people flourish in harmony with all nations. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.
We pray for those in need. For those who seek meaningful work, shelter, food,
healthcare, and love. We pray for those known to us in need of care, especially
those we name aloud or in our hearts… (pause). Meet their needs through your
bountiful compassion and our community’s action. Hear us, O God. Your
mercy is great.
We pray for all who worship you today. For wise elders and curious seekers,
joyful spirits and burdened souls. Give holy welcome and inspire holy
conversation. Deepen trust in your goodness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is
great.
We give thanks for those who have died in the faith and received the reward of
the righteous, remembering especially Aquila and Priscilla, martyrs, and Jan
Hus, martyr. Bless their memory among us, and their life with you. Hear us, O
God. Your mercy is great.
Presider adds Collect
*The Confession and Absolution BCP p 360
Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
People Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned
against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our
whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We
are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son
Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight
in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name.
Amen.
*The Peace
Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And also with you.

St. Thomas Episcopal Church Founded in 1846
Fourth Sunday after Pentecost July 2, 2017
Welcome to all who worship here this morning, and a special welcome to our
guests. We invite you to fill out a visitor card (located in the pews) and
drop it in the offering plate. If you have any questions, do ask an usher.
Worship at St. Thomas is intergenerational, and families are welcomed to
worship together. Nursery care is available during Sunday morning
worship, if needed. Children are invited to help with the ringing of the
bells after worship.
Hearing assistance devices are available in the narthex from the ushers.
All are welcome to come forward at Communion. Holy Eucharist is for all
baptized people. Those who wish to receive a blessing alone should
cross their arms across their chest. The wine may be taken as a
“common cup” (sipping) or it may be taken by intinction (dipping the
wafer into the chalice). If you prefer grape juice or gluten-free wafer, please make your preference known at the railing.
The St Thomas “Life of Christ” icon collection is a unique feature of our
worship space. If you would like to learn more about these or schedule
a tour for your small group, please call the church office.
