CRISIS IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH 2018 has been a very hard year. We Catholics have suffered greatly because of three public scandals - the grand jury findings in Pennsylvania; the revelation of terrible sins by Cardinal McCarrick; and the accusatory letter of Archbishop Viganò. It is normal to feel outraged, angry, ashamed, hurt, sad. We want a Church that reflects the goodness of Jesus. We want a Church especially where children and youth are protected, taught the moral life of the Gospel, and grow in the midst of a holy and safe community. May I urge several things: Pray for the purification of the Church: I believe that in this time of the 21st Century,

Jesus wants to purify the Church of corruption and abuse. For all the pain we are experiencing, the revelation of sin is an occasion for salvation by Jesus.

Pray for the Holy Father and the Bishops: One of the strangest aspects of the present crisis

is that it is the Bishops and the Pope himself who are being targeted - for what they knew; for how they handled abusive priests - going back over 60 years!

Be faithful to your Church: Whatever sins are revealed in the press, we

Catholics know that this is not ``ordinary'' Catholic life. True Catholic life is Jesus. It is the sacraments, Eucharist, baptism, forgivceness, mercy. It is salvation in Christ, mercy, works of charity. It is the witness and love of the Virgin Mary and the Saints. Catholic life is prayer, and parish life, and community and fraternity. Do not

lose perspective about what it really means to be a Catholic - to share the life of Jesus in the outpouring of grace of over 2,000 years. Be vigilant: The fact of the abuse of children and adolescents is a societal problem. There are many predators out there - and they are not just Church people. No institution is safe from people who have serious disorders - Church,

government, schools, organizations. In our Church, we must create a ``Safe Environment'' for youth, and we must create it in all places of our lives. Be holy as I am holy: Purity and chastity have always been difficult in

society. Certainly our society now has not progressed in following God's will. As Catholics, let us work for and pray for a society and a Church that clings to the values of the Gospel!
