UPCOMING EVENTS
From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners,
We began Holy Week last Sunday with a
blessing of palms, the Passion reading, and an evening
Passover meal with over eighty attendees. I truly
enjoy Palm or Passion Sunday as it begins for me a
week of deep reflection into the Paschal Mystery, that
is, the suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ Jesus.
The Passover meal is a highlight of the day for me. It
takes several hours of preparation by a handful of
people to get things just right. What we experience at
the Passover meal is a window into the Last Supper.
The Passover meal began over 3,300 years ago! In the
Book of Exodus, we read of the night that God sent His
angel of death to ‘passover’ all of Egypt so as to free
His Chosen People, the Israelites, who were enslaved in
hard labor and oppressive conditions. God used Moses
to free His people and when they won their freedom,
God commanded them (Exodus 12:1-14) to r emember
this night in perpetuity with a special meal. Two
thousand years ago, Jesus was partaking in that special
meal along with His disciples. However, Jesus changed
the ancient ritual meal of Passover. The priest repeats
the words that Jesus said at the Last Supper during the
consecration of the bread and wine at Mass. Through
these prayerful words, the bread and wine become the
Body and Blood, soul and divinity of Chr ist. The
Passover meal that Jesus and His disciples ate the
night before He died, was the FIRST Mass. Our
Passover meal brings this fact to light for all who
participate. I wish to thank those who made this
evening meal possible including our staff Kiley
Giacomelli, Virginia Trujillo Smith, and Greg Sánchez
as well as parishioners Anna Lessau, and Missy and
Darrell Giacomelli. Next year may you be a part of this
special meal.
We have been blessed to have Fr. Joel helping with
Mass these past several weeks. Fr. Joel has recently
retired and, as with anyone making a major adjustment
in life, is trying to find his niche where he can best live.
Unfortunately, Fr. Joel has decided to return to Tucson
for a while and therefore, will not be helping in the
parish. Remember him in your prayers as he hopes to
return to Las Cruces in the near future.
Though Christmas might be the most wonderful time
of the year, Easter is the most important time of the
year. The fifty days of Easter begins today and the
Church will celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ
from now until Pentecost. As we hear about the life of
Jesus after He rose from the dead in today’s Gospel, we
reflect on His journey to the village of Emmaus and
how his disciples’ eyes were opened as they recognized
Him in the breaking of the bread. Jesus opens the eyes
of anyone who desires the truth. May we pray for
20/20 visions.
Happy Easter, Fr. Richard

Respect for Life
These things are promoted by the pro-death politicians: Abortion, contraception, divorce, euthanasia, feminism of the radical type, and genetic experimentation and mutilation. The
continuance in public office of such politicians can be a danger to our survival as a nation.
We must vote pro-life.
