Families in Faith—Listening: an Act of Love

In 2003, a talented audio producer began the project, Storycorps, which continues to this day. David Isay invited individuals of varied backgrounds, throughout this nation, to share and preserve the stories of their lives. These stories, preserved in a recorded interview, are collected in the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. Tens of thousands of interviews relate the lives of farmers, military members, physicians, nurses, lawyers, as well as parents and children, estranged families and reunited friends to name just a few. These diverse stories all have one thing in common. They are all told by those who have lived them to those they love. In the telling the speaker is truly heard by the other and the listener's wonder becomes a part of the tale. Twice in our Lectionary readings this Sunday we hear situations in which communities listened as others spoke. From the Book of Nehemiah we hear of the extended reading of the Torah by Ezra to the entire gathered community of Israelites. In the Gospel of Luke we hear Jesus stand before his own community in Nazareth reading and preaching from the prophet Isaiah. In both situations those who listened were moved. Nehemiah tells us the people wept as they heard the words of the Torah. In Luke's Gospel the community is cut to the heart with awe and wonder. In the act of listening, the moment was transformed and grace embraced those gathered. They encountered beauty and truth, which bear the presence of the living God. When we truly listen to another we humble ourselves. This movement toward humility opens us to the experience of wonder and draws us closer to love. When we listen to another we willingly quiet our own voice and put aside our incessant internal chatter. We shift our focus from the self and concentrate upon the one who is speaking. We recognize the dignity inherent in them and wait upon the gift and graces that may attend their words. In this act of listening we are reminded of our shared humanity, and we find common ground where none was anticipated. We bear witness in our l istening to the divine truth that every life matters. When we listen to one another, to God, we make time and a space for them in our life. We work to understand others and walk for a moment with others. Listening acknowledges the singular and unique presence of the other in the world we share. Each Sunday our liturgy offers us a banquet of biblical texts. We are called to do more than just hear them or be present while they are proclaimed. We are called to listen to the words of Scripture, to put aside for a few brief moments our preoccupations with the past, present or future, that we may receive the grace of God for our l ives. To listen to Scripture is to walk in and with the Lord. Listening changes our hearts and minds, making us aware of those places where our l ives sti ll lack God's healing, teaching, and animating presence. The Word of God calls us to listen not only to the Spirit but to those around us. It calls us to be especially mindful of those who have no one to hear them, who have been overlooked, whose voice has been weakened by illness or silenced by imprisonment. This week, may we find time to love one another well through the simple act of l istening, deeply and fully, and in doing so, may we mirror the love of God. May we remind those we listen to of the beauty of their lives. May we marvel at, and rejoice in, the way God has acted through the stories of their lives.

I wanted to thank you and your church for sending me and my fellow soldiers a couple of packages during this past year. It is very nice to have people that care that us Americans are stil l fighting over here. As you know, the days are long and our flights are sometimes long and excruciating. Where we are, tucked in the mountains, the scenery is beautiful. Sometimes it's hard to believe that there is a war going on. The FOB is pretty small, but we have hot showers and hot chow on most days. It's nice to have junk food and candy to split up the monotony of military chow for sure. I did share with the rest of my troop and they are very appreciative. The baby wipes are quite the luxury as well! Unfortunately our internet here is not very good and I cannot attach any pictures, but I will try and get one to you. We are conducting our Relief In Place at the end of this month and we will be replaced by a unit out of Savanna, GA. We are all excited to get home and be with our families. Again, thank you and your church for sending us care packages and bringing a little bit of home to us that are so far away. CW2 Colin P. Hightower B Troop, 2-6 Cavalry Squadron OH-58D Pilot-In-Command I would like to express our collective thanks for the care package we received this past week here in Regional Command Southwest, located in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. The cloth squares with a crucifix sewed in between the fabric was particularly touching.

So from all of us here in the Civilian-Military Stabilization Team, I would like to wish your congregation a Holy and wonderful Christmas. M. Bugler 1st Marine Expeditionary Force Forward C-9 Unit 42511 FPO AP 96427 I'm writing in response to your letter that made its way to us here in 4-9 Infantry Battalion through the care package that your Church recently sent (it was deferred to us as "Any Chaplain"). I must say that we really appreciate all the things Holy Cross is doing to support us, especially the thoughtfulness of the items we received in the package. The Soldiers appreciate it as well. Anyway, I am part of the Unit Ministry Team of our unit and I've CC'ed this to our Chaplain, CPT Will Alley. We're working hard and having fun in regard to Soldier ministry and religious support here, and it's the first time to Afghanistan for both of us. We have about 8 months to go. If you and Holy Cross Catholic Church would like to send more care packages our way, it would truly be a blessing; please see our deployment address below. Of course, there is no pressure if there are other requests that you all need to address first. Again, thanks and may God bless you! NATHAN M. SCOTT SGT (P), USA Battalion Chaplain Assistant, CTF Manchu 4-9 IN, 4-2 SBCT FOB Zangabad, Afghanistan

AMIGOS FOR CHRIST

Amigos for Christ mission trips consist of groups from schools, churches, and companies. The focus of

Amigos mission trips is to serve God by w orking alongside and building relationships w ith Nicaraguans. The

activities vary, but usually consist of construction w ork, community development, health clinics, spiritual

programs, sports, and visiting orphanages. Over 50 groups go to Chinandega, Nicaragua each year.

Testimonies include one from a middle-aged w oman w ho is not particularly strong or in good shape. "God

kept knocking on my door, telling me to go to Nicaragua. Not one to argue w ith my Lord, I signed up for the

trip and took my f irst trip w ith Amigos for Christ in July of 2008. What I found w hen I arrived there is that

Amigos is all about building and digging, but they are also about building relationships, improving education

and providing hope for moms, dads and children. The tasks are construction oriented, but the goals are for

better lives for the families of Chinandega.

The w eekend Amigos for Christ founder, John Bland, spoke at Holy Cross masses sixty-f ive members

indicated they w ere interested in going on a mission trip. Of those sixty-f ive, forty will go on the f irst Holy

Cross mission trip to Nicaragua June 1-8 of this year. The

remaining tw enty-f ive had other plans for that June w eek

but w anted to be kept on the list for a future mission trip.

Anyone w ishing to have their name added to this list, w hich

has already expanded to forty-eight, should call Deacon

Dick Suever, 404-259-9180 or email, [email protected].
