Council targets the firstphase. Phase I includespaved parking, a bridge tothe island, a handicapaccessible kayak/canoelaunch, a fishing dock andrain gardens.

In the 1940s and 50s,it wasn’t unusual to findDimondale residents on theisland picnicking with theirfamilies near the smalllighthouse.

Over the years, the islandbecame less of a destinationand became overgrown withvegetation

In 2004, the Villagepurchased the dam in theGrand River and the islandfrom the Lansing Board ofWater and Light. After thedam was removed in 2006the Village turned its focusto researching ways to makethe island more usable.

Lions host spaghetti dinner

The Holt Lions hosted their annual Spaghetti Dinner on February 11. Allproceeds raised at Lions Club fundraisers are used within the Holt communityto supply vision screening, eyeglasses, hearing aids, scholarships, andgrants in aid for the needy. Pictured are Holt Lions Dave Bennett, TimFauser, and John Elsinga serving some guests who just happen to be HoltKiwanians. They are Les and Margret Turner and Steve Dougan.

The project would costabout $5 million, half ofwhich would be forgivenbecause of “green” stimu-lus dollars.

Township Manager JohnElsinga said it would behard to pass up on thatkind of free money, as wellas a low-interest loan forthe rest of the costs.

“I’ll take 50 cents onthe dollar for a major proj-

ect like this,” Elsinga said.“That’s simply a good deal.”

Hubbell, Roth and Clarkofficials have said the 50percent forgiveness aspectof the loan would likely notbe available in the future, given the current economicclimate.

Trustee Derek Bajema, who voted against spend-ing $160,000 on the engi-neering study, has said hewould be hard pressed tovote to approve the project

because he believes town-ship taxpayers should notcarry the burden of payingfor it.

“This is a $5 milliondollar solution aimed at a$55,000 per year ‘problem’that farmers call fertilizer,”Bajema said.

“In the Delhi sewer ser-vice world, we should beinvesting our constantly in-creasing sewer bills intoaging infrastructure to en-sure the toilets flush, not

Sludge: Dryer would be rare ‘green’ technologyContinued from page 1 putting up a $5 million Ger-

man spa to dry a productthat is already a benefit tolocal farms.”

The project would callfor a sewer rate increase of$1.20 per month for the av-

erage household.“Many folks that I have

talked to said a dollartwenty isn’t that bad,”Trustee John Hayhoe said.Hayhoe voted against theoriginal study, but said he

may change his mind onthe project.

The township and theengineering are also pursu-ing other state and federalgrants to help pay for thecost for the project.

College Signing Day

at Holt High School

Eleven Holt seniors signed letters of intent to play at the college level atthe signing day ceremony held in the John Chi library at Holt High Schoolon February 4th. Pictured are: (Back row, L. to R) Joey Myers-Baseball/Olivet College, Nick Thomas-Football/Saginaw Valley, Mike Smith-Football/Wayne State, Kenny Rogers-Football/Central Michigan, Brendan Finnerty-Soccer/Wheaton College (Wheaton, Illinois), Ben Gates-Soccer/LipscombUniversity (Nashville, TN), Collin Mohr-Soccer/Detroit Mercy. (Front Row,L. to R) Nicole Borek-Soccer/Detroit Mercy, Emily Klauka-Basketball/HopeCollege, Mandy Johnson-Basketball/Western Michigan, Jordan Rakas-Soccer/University of Iowa(Iowa City, IA).

While Holt’s varsity wres-tling team did not have thetype of finish to their sea-son that many had hoped, they still do have five wres-tlers who will be competingat the Division 1 IndividualState Finals at the Palace ofAuburn Hills.

Seth Hanton (160), TylerCulp (285), Shayne Wire-man (103), A.J. Presley(119) and Dominic Trevino(125) will all compete in thefinals, which took place thispast weekend.

This is the first timesince 2007 that the Ramshave not competed in theTeam State Finals, whichtook place last weekend

in Battle Creek. Holt waseliminated in the regionalround, which has giventhese five wrestlers moretime to focus on their indi-vidual matches ahead.

“It’s strange because weare so used to being there, and all of a sudden, youhave two weeks with nocompetition,” Holt coachRocky Shaft said. “Wres-tling in probably the mostgrueling sport we have inhigh school in the senseof the physical punishmentthese kids take. So with thatsaid, this does give themtwo good weeks to repairtheir bodies and time towork on some particulars.”

Of the five individualscompeting for Holt, Hantonwas the lone winner at the

individual regional tourna-ment, and therefore, willbe rewarded a No. 1 seedin his weight class. ShayneWireman took second inthe regional, and Culp, Pre-sley and Trevino all placedthird.

Shaft is optimistic abouthis wrestlers chances thisweekend, but believes thatanything can happen onceyou get to this point in thetournament.

“As a coach, you justhave to feel the kids outin the senese of how theyare acting, and these guysseem to be doing everythingright,” Shaft said. “The hard-est part, really, is gettingthere. After you get there,it’s all about whoever is hotat that given moment.”

Holt football team members Collin Klisch (from left), Christian Gibson and JoshMarsh load boxes of food Feb. 26 that will be distributed to needy families in theLansing area. Hundreds gathered to help the needy in and around Lansing.

Robert Killips/Lansing State Journal

HOLT — Hundreds ofstacked cardboard boxescircled Holt High School onFeb. 26, waiting to be load-ed into the 500 vehicles inthe parking lot.

The boxes - each holdingabout 31 pounds of food -were set to be delivered to2,700 needy families acrossIngham, Eaton and Clintoncounties.

More than 1,000 volun-teers filled the high schoolfor the third annual FoodDrop, organized by TheChurch of Greater Lansing,a network of 45 Lansing-ar-ea churches.

About 30 of those church-es were represented at FoodDrop 2011, said Tim Eng-lish, executive pastor ofDeWitt’s Northpointe Com-munity Church and FoodDrop project co-leader.

“When people of goodfaith can partner with peo-ple of good will, we can

make a difference in ourcommunity,” English said.

Volunteers lined up inthe high school’s hallwaysto grab a map of the foodrecipients’ addresses. Eachvehicle was expected to de-liver five boxes of the food, which could feed a familyfor one to two weeks, oran individual for five to sixweeks.

Those in need of foodcalled in requests during aweek in November. Englishsaid about 2,400 reserva-tions for food were madethat week.

The churches raisedmore than $92,000 from No-vember to December for theFood Drop, English said.Any money not used forfood is divided among morethan 30 nonprofits.

Susan Whittington andLorraine Brandon, both ofLansing’s Christian Celebra-tion Center Church, wereback Feb. 26 for their sec-ond year delivering food.

Brandon said last year’s

event showed her how muchthe delivery was appreciat-ed when she befriended a91-year-old woman in need.

“She was so excited andit was such a blessing totalk to her,” said Brandon, who is a youth pastor at thechurch.

“(The Food Drop) reallyshows love in action.”

The two brought some ofthe teens from the churchto help in the delivery.

“It just lets you see howblessed you really are,”Whittington said.

The event has becomemore efficient in the pastthree years, English said, byestablishing call-in food res-ervations and moving to alocation where volunteerscan participate in both a pre-drop rally and food pick-up.

“I love to see so manydifferent people coming to-gether,” Brandon said. “Noone church stands out. It’sabout us all coming togeth-er as one to help.”
