PICTOGRAM’S KEY

• Sires whose daughters will be well-suited to an automatic milking system

• To help livestock farmers select reproducers that will transmit desired features, a ‘Ro’ pictogramme is now placed by the sire’s name.

• This qualification mainly takes into account the morphological traits of the udder, as a major factor of incompatibility with automating milking systems. Special attention is also paid to other related critical traits.

• This same range is also adapted to Rototandem milking. Straightness of hindshanks is included in locomotion traits.

How does it work?

Horned cattle have in their genes a ‘pp’ allele pair, and hornless cattle either a ‘PP’ or a ‘Pp’ allele pair. The hornless trait is dominant, so any offspring with a ‘P’ in its inherited genes is born without horns. Because every calf inherits one allele from each of its parents, 50% of offspring will be born without horns when a ‘Pp’ bull mates with a ‘pp’ cow.

WHAT IS KETOSIS?

Ketosis is a common disorder that typically occurs in dairy cows in early lactation. It is most consistently characterized by:

- Reduced milk yield (up to 500 kg less in primiparous cows)

- Impacted reproduction (delayed ovulation and a near 20% drop in success rate at first AI)

- Increased risk of retained placenta and displaced abomasum

Prevalence figures point to an estimated 5% of dairy cows carrying severe clinical signs and 20% carrying subclinical signs (elevated ketone bodies).

Ketosis costs money: up to 6 000 € for a french herd of 100 dairy cows, adding up a lost of around 250€ per ketotic cow! (it means adding up veterinary fees and inherent all-herd Ketosis-related losses)

WHY SELECT ON THIS TRAIT?

Because this trait is heritable! Livestock farmers who factor the Ketosis index into their female herdstock selection and mating programs will quickly cut down the number of ketotic cows in their herd.

Targeted selection geared for direct pay-off in farm revenues:

- Right from the first generation: 21% reduction in Ketosis cases, i.e. 1 200 € in per-annum savings for a french herd of 100 dairy cows (or 12 € savings per ketotic cow).

- Right from the second generation: 36% improvement in health, i.e. a cumulated 2 100 € in savings for a french herd of 100 dairy cows (or 21 €/dairy cows).

GÉNOSANTÉ: A VALUE-CHAIN-WIDE CONSORTIUM PROJECT TO IMPROVE DAIRY CATTLE HEALTH

For the very first time, 10 stakeholder–partners in the French dairy-cattle industry (breed selection businesses, livestock extension services, industry leaders and research institutes) have joined forces in a consortium: to improve dairy cattle health! The consortium project is set to run for a 4-year period, and project outcomes will progressively bring depth and breadth to our panel of indexes and help deliver better outreach and improvements to livestock farmers.

WHERE DO I FIND THE NEW PROOFS?

The new proofs ‘Ketosis’ and ‘Health synthesis’ proofs are found in the health traits column. They are easy to locate in the sire summaries and in the proofs tables where they are flagged by the GENOSANTE logo

For the very first time, representatives from up and

down the French dairy industry value chain have joined forces to

put together indexes designed to promote better dairy cattle health. The first outcomes of

this project are “Ketosis” and “Health composite”—two new

indexes released in August 2016 for breeders working

with Holstein, Pie Rouge and Normande cattle!
