Abeatingheartisaprecioussymboloflife. This project proposal celebrates the ability to look inside the body and heal the driving force of life: the heart.

How?

*Ashiftinthegridpatternallowsthebuildingtorevealitsinteriorcomposition

*Likeaheart’sleftandrightatriumwhich separates oxygen-rich blood from oxygen-poor blood, the circula-tionbetweenmedicalpersonnelandthepatientsandtheirvisitorsisseparatedbythe building’s massing strategy.

*Verticalcirculationhappensinthein-ner mass and is revealed in the exterior facade.

*Eachpatientcareroomhasachartingstationandavisitor’ssuite.Thelayoutisdesignedsothepatientcanseeboththenurse and their loved ones, but the visi-torsandthemedicalstaffhaveprivacyfrom one another.

Becauseofitshistoricsignificance,location,andpotentialtofurtherunitethecommunity,thisdesigninvestigationaimstocreate a community equestrian center for the citizensofLasVegas,NewMexicoonthesiteof an abandoned WPA project—King Stadium. TheexistingStadiumruinswillprovidethesiteforinvestigatingtherelationshipbetweenthelandscape, history, the local community, and visitors.Thescaleandfunctionoftheprojectmustaccommodatecompetitorsandspecta-tors of the Great Santa Fe Trail Horse Race, local equestrian events, and concerts.

To understand opposing views in a debate, one must observe and be aware of oc-currenceswithinatopic.Studentsattendingthe Birmingham Charter School of Debate will be aware of the occurrences within the build-ing.

How?

* An open plan- The hallways on all three levels overlook the lunch room, anddebateauditorium/gymnasium.

* A play in transparency- The walls intheactivitiessectionaremadeofLitracon (a translucent concrete), so when students climb the rock wall, theirsilhouettecanbeseenbythoseinside the school. Glass bricks make up the exterior cladding of the hallways, and visually separates the massing betweenclassesandactivities.

*Interactivelevels- the 3 massings of the building step down in the direc-tionofthe16thStreetBaptistChurch.Thistieredeffectnotonlyallowslightto evenly enter the building, but also encouragesactivityontherooftopoftheactivitiestier.

How?

•Axialflowwithinthesiteandbuildinggivenoticetothecrater’sdirectionofimpact.

•Thereflectiveskinaroundthecrystal-line structure connects the atmosphere andgroundbyreflectinghowthesitemeets the sky.
