It is hard to believe I recently passed the two-month mark since I began my time at the Holliston Senior Center. I must be having fun because time is flying! In my first two months, I have had the pleasure of meeting so many wonderful, warm-hearted residents of Holliston. I immediately felt welcomed and have been making new friends ever since! It has been delightful working with our team—Lisa, Marty, Debbie, our drivers and volunteers as we continually adapt our programming to these changing times. In this time, I have seen so many old favorites return -- from the Tune Timers to our weekly bakery drop offs. I am excited to see what the Fall will bring. The time draws near to our Annual Fall Fair on September 11th. While I am excited to see it for the first time, I am equally impressed and grateful for all the time and hard work the Senior Support Foundation (SSF) and our volunteers have dedicated this summer to making it a fun time for all. I hope to see you there. Although I have met many of you, I would still like to share a little background for those who I havent had the chance to meet yet. I come to the Senior Center with a nonprofit background. In prior roles, I supported seniors in finding employment, learning computer basics, and organized fun events and programs. I also worked in causes dedicated to improving the lives and expanding resources for immigrants, refugees, school-age children and low income mothers. My career plans have always revolved around doing good for my community so I am very grateful for this role and the opportunity to support Holliston residents. If we have not met, I hope we can soon. OUTREACH CORNER BY MARTY SCHNEIER

For the last couple of weeks as I’ve been getting ready for the day, I’ve been hearing this bird sound outside my window that I have been unable to identify. The sound has been loud and insistent and finally I have discovered the source of all that noise…a Carolina Wren perched atop the railings of my back deck. It has given me pause in my rush to get out the door. I take the moment, listen to her song, and realize that in that moment...I’m finding joy.

What is joy? I think for most people, it’s what you find happiness in. It could be a family celebration, a vacation to a new or familiar destination or the appreciation in sharing in someone’s success. But as we know, with what our world has been in the midst of, much of what we found joy in in the past, has not been possible today. So where do we turn to find joy? In the small things. A fresh bouquet of flowers, a beautiful sunset, a heartwarming conversation with an old friend.

Appreciating and recognizing a small moment of joy in your day will bring a smile to your face. And when we take pause to recognize these moments, “be” with these moments, we may even see that this joy is really part of a bigger picture.

I realized why this little Wren would sing to me each day. She’s made a nest in my windowsill, next to the air conditioner, laid some eggs and just this morning, I hear the peeps of a nest full of babies. And my sense of joy, became that much fuller.

My door is always open. Be well, Marty

MODERN PRONOUNS: “THEY” IS CORRECT

Using “they and them” in the singular may

seem to go against what you learned about

grammar in grade school, but you’ve

probably been noticing a lot of people using

the pronouns they/them instead of he/him or she/her… so

many people that Massachusetts now offers M, F, and X

gender markers on driver’s licenses, and terms such as non-

binary and genderfluid have made it into mainstream media.

Wondering what it all means? Would you like to learn more

about how using affirming language and pronouns can help

you create a more inclusive community?

SENIOR CENTER ANNUAL FALL FAIR!!! September 11, 2021, 9:00-3:00pm

Although most folks think of the Fall Fair, as the Senior Center’s Fair, it is actually run by the Senior Support Foundation (SSF). Like most things in 2020, the Fall Fair was cancelled for the first time in 33 years. The Fair is the primary source of revenue for the SSF. In spite of not having the Fair last year, the SSF continued to fund classes as well as monthly breakfasts and special events. The Fair offers something for everyone, from our huge yard sale, to baked goods, books, art and frames, linens and things, raffles, and so much more. It is great for the whole family, and 100% of money raised support the Senior Center and the Seniors of Hollis-ton. What many people do not realize is that it is the SSF, along with participants’ donations, pays for all classes and programs at the Center. No taxpayer money is used for our pro-grams. They also support other senior needs in the community.

Please join us on September 11th for a fun filled day, supporting your neighbors!
