In your list of
voting priori-
ties, where
does a candi-
date’s position
on Israel rank? If this policy
outlook is important to you,
then the immediate challenge
is to determine what the candi-
date really feels about Israel.
And that’s not always easy to
do, given the difficulty of finding
an unfiltered interpretation of a
candidates’ stated position.
That’s why one of my recent
reads, and the subject of this
month’s issue of The Rabbi’s
Nightstand, is a book by Bar
Ilan University’s chair of the
political science department,
Jonathan Rynhold. The book,
The Arab-Israeli Conflict in
American Political Culture,
tracks current trends in Ameri-
can politics through the lenses
of party ideology and faith. It’s
a data-based study that doesn’t
fall prey to emotional analyses.
It’s sober, but it doesn’t need to
be sobering, for like Dennis
Ross in his book Doomed to
Succeed, which I reviewed in
this space a few months ago,
Rynhold is secure in his belief
that America will always be a
loyal ally to Israel. In his own
final words: ―…the underlying
cultural foundations of pro-

tary. All faiths are welcome.

I am now sitting at my desk in
my home putting together some
of my thoughts as we approach
the New Year. In the back-
ground, I can hear the tumult
downstairs…June is starting to
prepare for the holidays and as
she finalizes the menu, she is
taking stock of what she al-
ready has and putting together
a list of what she needs to get.
Oy…what a list! If I gain an-
other 5 pounds, you’ll under-
stand. The only thing I asked
her to make sure we have is
honey…I love the custom of the
new fruit with honey and I al-
ways keep some on the side for
challah. Delicious & Traditional!
I am praying for a sweet year
for all of us!
As we approach the New Year
(5777) I find myself reflecting
on the past year with tremen-
dous warmth, nostalgia as well
as incredible hope for the fu-
ture. It was a beautiful and re-
warding year for our congrega-
tion. I had just completed cele-
brating my Jubilee year at my
beloved Synagogue and I will
never forget the beautiful times
we shared together during the
Dinner Dance, Concerts, etc.
Now we are embarking on a
new phase as we join with our
friends of the Bayside Jewish
Center and set sail together on
our new journey as the Hollis
Hills Bayside Jewish Center
(HHBJC). Thank you to all for
making this happen! As I said
before, I believe this was
BASHERT! It took some time
but now we are one family!
I want to take this time to re-
member the very dear and pre-
cious members whom we lost
this past year. They were very
special people who were an
integral part of our congrega-
tional family for many years
and they will surely be missed
and remembered. May Hashem
watch over them as they rest in
peace.
As we plan the New Year, I
would like to give you some
dates to mark in your Calen-
dars. **SAVE THE DATE** Our
GALA CONCERT will be held
on SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th
at 3:00 PM. I have some sur-
prises planned for this concert.
Not only will we experience and
hear some beautiful voices in

with an array of eclectic musi-
cal genres, but get ready for
some hilarious laughter! This
concert will not only be a Musi-
cal Extravaganza but it will also
be an afternoon filled with hu-
mor & laughter! Reserve the

Israel sentiment in America are
so robust that the special rela-
tionship between Israel and the
United States will remain virtu-
ally unbreakable‖ (p. 188)
That’s the easy part. Particu-
lars of party and religious out-
look aside, Israel will always be
closely allied with the US, re-
gardless of who sits in the Oval
Office or holds a majority in the
House. Now comes the hard
part—determining how a candi-
date’s ideology and even faith
will color his or her attitudes
toward Israel. This next para-
graph describes the intersec-
tion between American identity
and feelings about Israel, and
may help explain why some
think that party affiliation deter-
mines one’s outlook. Rynhold
writes:
―Indeed, the Arab-Israeli con-
flict evokes such passionate
debate precisely because it
touches on core elements of
American identity. Thus, for
liberals, sympathy for Israel is
rooted primarily in the Ameri-
can creed, specifically Israel’s
identity as a democracy. Be-
cause liberalism is at the core
of that creed, they expect Israel
to live up to those values…On
the other hand, while Conser-
vatives also support Israel be-
cause it is a democracy, they
give greater weight than liber-
als to the place of Israel in the
ethno-religious dimension of
American identity…‖ (p. 182)
Rynhold notes a significant dif-
ference in pro-Israel attitudes
between evangelical Christians
and mainline Protestants. For
(Rabbi Wise Continued from page 1) example, citing a 2012 Pew
Research Center study, 67 per-
c e n t o f E v a n g e l i c a l s
―sympathize with Israel over
the Palestinians,‖ compared
with 47 percent of Mainliners.
What are the religious roots of
such a discrepancy? For Evan-
gelicals, ―a sense of being bibli-
cally commanded to support
the Jewish people coupled with
a sense that support for Israel
is linked to biblical prophecies
about the end times undergird
that support‖ (p. 114). On the
other hand, for some Mainlin-
ers, anti-Israel sentiment is in-
formed by a variety of religious
influences, such as Liberation
theology, which celebrates
Jewish exile and does not allow
for Jewish national self-
determination (p. 129). But,
Rynhold notes, the anti-Israel
faction of Mainline Protestant
denominations is not even in
sync with their clergy and the
mainline public. Besides, their
numbers are dwarfed by the
Evangelicals.
These theological issues may
explain why some Jewish vot-
ers struggle to identify with cer-
tain candidates for office, be it
for President or other elected
positions. What if we’re entirely
in sync with a candidates’ do-
mestic policy, but wonder about
his/her pro-Israel bona fides?
What if we know a politician is
staunchly pro-Israel, but find
his/her domestic platform
anathema to our values? Ryn-
hold’s book won’t solve those
inner conflicts, but it can help
us understand the impact of

Ohr Chadash News
Welcome Back To
Ohr Chadash
Sunday September 11th
,
marked the start of the new
school year at Ohr Chadash.
After weeks of preparation, reg-
istration and completion of the
summertime move to Hillcrest
Jewish Center, the new year of
learning began.
This year, the first day of
school coincided with the 15th
anniversary of the 9/11 trag-
edy. During the brief opening
ceremony, at which children
and parents had an opportunity
to meet the staff and reunite
with friends, a moment of si-
lence was observed. Morah
Judy presented a brief program
for Kitot Aleph-Gesher about
the importance of remembering
and learning from such life al-
tering tragedies. Each class
held their individual age appro-
priate commemoration with
their teacher.
The very popular Rabbi Parent
learning series resumed this
year. On September 11th, Rab-
bis Fryer Bodzin, Kogan and
Wise presented ―How to Talk to
Your Children about Tragedy
and Suffering. The parents who
attended found the talk infor-
mative and helpful. Four more
sessions are planned covering
topics including, bullying, God,
Israel and children’s bodies.
This year, with Rosh Hashanah
(Jewish New Year) and the
many holidays in the month of
Tishrei being celebrated in Oc-
tober, the teachers had an am-
Shalom! Now that the cool
days of fall are upon us, and
we have celebrated the High
Holy Days, we are looking for-
ward to another year of exciting
events with the Sisterhood.
Our paid-up membership
brunch was a great success.
Everyone enjoyed good food
and hearing Maris Blechner
speak.
The Pink Ladies of the Hollis
Hills Bayside Jewish Center will
be participating in the Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer
walk on Sunday October 16th.
We will be meeting at the cen-
ter at 8am to car pool.
Our Torah Fund brunch will
take place on Sunday, Novem-
ber 13th at 10am. The Torah
Fund honoree will be past
president and active member
Carol Lieber, who has worked
tirelessly for the Sisterhood.
The Torah Fund is an integral
part of the Sisterhood and the
National Women’s League of
Conservative Judaism allowing
us a direct avenue to support
Conservative Judaism and the
Jewish Theological Seminary.
We are looking forward to Sis-
terhood members supporting
this function.
On December 11th we will
have a Chanukah bazaar.
There will be vendors selling a
variety of goods making your
holiday shopping easier.

ple opportunity to teach and
prepare the children for Rosh
ha Shana, Yom Kippur, Sukkot
and Simchat Torah. A special
Sukkah program is planned for
all the children on Hoshana
Rabba which occurs on Sun-
day, October 23.
On behalf of the staff of Ohr
Chadash, I wish the students a
stimulating and exciting school
year and wish students, parents
and all members of HJC,
HHBJC and ICCJ who support
and host our school and very
happy and healthy New Year.

H2I is off to a great start and
looking forward to an incredible
year ahead! We kicked off our
year with a Leadership Training
Shabbaton from 9/9-9/10 at
Hollis Hills Bayside JC with our
high school chapter board
members, who spent a Shab-
bat learning valuable leader-
ship skills that they will use as
they plan and execute our USY
programming this coming year.
On Sunday, September 11, our
regular programming kicked off
with the O-Rio Olympics for our
younger groups, who had their
own Olympic Games full of
events that used Oreo cookies,
while our USYers had a
―Summer’s Over…Back to Re-
ality‖ program in which they
took part in our take on some
of their favorite television reality
shows. Later in the month, our
younger groups participated in
Couch Potato, a video trivia
competition, as well as a Rosh
Hashanah cooking program in
which they learned how to
make a number of treats for the
holiday. Our USYers ended
summer with H2I Does H2O, a
program full of water games,
and enjoyed METNY USY
Kickoff at which they partici-
pated in a scavenger hunt at
the Museum of Natural History
with peers from across the NY
Metropolitan area.
Because of Jewish and secular
holidays, October is a quiet
month at H2I, although we are
looking forward to our Sukkah
Dinners on Thursday, October
20 – from 5-6 PM for Grades 2-
8 and 6:30-8 PM for Grades 9-
12 at Hillcrest Jewish Center.
Our Sunday programming re-
sumes after the holidays on
October 30, when our younger
groups will participate in laser
tag, while our USYers partici-
pate in a Social Actions pro-
gram coordinated by METNY
USY.
Looking ahead, our November
calendar includes great pro-
grams like Tie-Dye Night, Israel
Basic Training, and a Social
Actions Supermarket Sweep
scavenger hunt for our younger
groups, and Tie-Dye, Judaism
Around the World, and our an-
nual Social Actions Shul-In,
which will focus on the environ-
ment this year.

Our annual Sisterhood Shabbat
will be held on February 4. This
is one of our most spiritually
fulfilling events, where our
members lead the Shabbat
services from the beginning to
the end. Please begin to think
about a part that you have
never tried before, and for
which you would be comfort-
able volunteering. It has been
wonderful watching our mem-
bers change their roles each
year and experience new
pieces. We always look forward
to a beautiful service.
We are working on something
exciting for February. We will
keep you posted.
In March we celebrate the joy-
ous holiday of Purim as Sister-
hood prepares with our Purim
Project. Please be ready to
volunteer to assemble Purim
baskets on March 5th at
10:00am for distribution on
March 11th after the Megillah
reading. In April we will con-
tinue our tradition of the
Women’s Seder. This inspiring
event is a learning experience
as well as a social one.
We are planning a special
event in April that we are sure
you will enjoy. May will bring a
country-western hoedown with
the Men’s Club. June 14th will
be our end-term Challah bake.
Please join us at our upcoming
planning meetings on Wednes-
day, October 13th at 8:00pm.
We look forward to seeing you
at our upcoming events.

An Update From
the Green Team
By Maris Blechner
Engagement Committee
Hollis Hills Bayside Jewish Center
Every year we collect used
toys, books, and clothing for
children at several battered
women’s shelters that we know
about, through a specific Black
Hebrew Tabernacle. The items
are given out at a specific late
fall event to which the women
and children are invited.
This year, the Tabernacle is
asking our help with something
specific. The children at the
Tabernacle hardly ever, if at all,
get anything new. This year,
the goal is to provide them with
NEW toys and books. If you
have any new children’s toys or
books in your home that you
could donate, please bring
them to the office, where a box
will be provided to hold them.
If you need them picked up,
please just call 917-941-8640.
If you have no new children’s
toys or books to donate but still
want to help, we would greatly
appreciate your buying just one
item and bringing it in. It is
truly a mitzvah to improve the
life of a child in need.
Thank you on the children’s
behalf.
We are happy to tell you that
we have sent two more boxes
of eyeglasses to the Lions’

Program. We have sent at
least several hundred to date.

A Yarn About Yarn
By Rebecca Reich
To use an old-fashioned term I
am going to tell you a yarn
(story) about yarn.
Our hat project began over two
years ago. We have made
hundreds of hats, our crafters
are wonderful. I was prompted
to start the project when my
cousin’s grandson signed up,
because he felt it was the logi-
cal course of action after the
September 11th attacks. We
began our project with hats for
soldiers; they are not only for
warmth but also for comfort
under the helmets they wear.
The synagogue paid for the
yarn, our crafters provided the
hooks, needles and labor and a
member paid for much of the
shipping to the charities who
see the hats get delivered to
the soldiers.
We expanded to include tiny
hats for children in a local hos-
pital NICU after two of our
grandchildren spent some time
in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit). Anyone who has
ever walked into one of those
units knows what it feels like in
the pit of their stomach when
they see those little babies and
how much it helps seeing the
tiny hats made by volunteers
that give the babies some indi-
viduality. Our initial yarn was
donated by a grandmother
whose latest grandchild was a
girl – everyone kept asking for
something other than pink for
hats. That is where Rabbi
Pamela Barmash came in,
thanks to her patience, time
and generosity we now have
many soft colors, she gave us
some soft and beautiful yarns
from her Mom’s stash. Her
mother Sarah Barmash left one
of the most amazing stashes I
have ever seen and Rabbi
Barmash was kind enough to
spend part of a day this sum-
mer helping me go through it to
pick out the perfect yarns for
babies.
Thanks to Rabbi Pam we are
now in multi-colored shape and
ready for anyone interested in
continuing this project. Pat-
terns for hats (both large and
small) and yarn can be picked
up in our Synagogue office and
completed hats dropped off
there. I am sure every soldier,
parent, grandparent and great-
grandparent who feels the com-
fort of our efforts will thank us.
Enjoy the cooler weather.
