New for our Fabulous Front Desk Volunteers!!
It was brought up at a recent Advisory Council Meeting that some of our newer (and older) front desk
volunteers have a desire to have continued training in their roles as your Hollin Hall Concierge. They do an
awesome job and put a lot of effort in being able to be as informative to members scanning in as well as
walk-in potential new members. They are the first impression of our center and take their responsibilities
very seriously. It is up to the staff to continue to give them the tools needed to manage the front desk.
Starting in March, the staff will host a series (4 X a year) of informal meetings for our front desk volunteers to
keep them informed of center activities, facility updates (when possible), changes in policies and
procedures, and more. A light Continental Breakfast will be served. The meeting will be from 9-10 a.m. in
room 217 immediately before the monthly Advisory Council meetings on March 5th, June 4th, September 3rd
and December 3rd. Our front desk volunteers should be on the look-out for an e-mail invite!
New to the Area? Want to check out Hollin Hall Senior Center?
Hollin Hall offers a free, 1-time, complimentary visit to our Center to check out programs and activities or to
come spend the day with us! Calling ahead of your visit is helpful, but not necessary. When you come in,
simply sign in at the Concierge desk and come into the main office to see a member of our staff. You’ll need
to fill out a brief form with your contact information as well as provide an emergency contact for yourself
while you are participating at the center. Bring a friend or neighbor to show them all we have to offer!

The Demographic History of the Mt. Vernon Area: 1940-2010, presented by Campbell Gibson. The U.S. Census has been conducted
every 10 years since 1790 and this year we will participate in the 24th decennial Census. Around 1940, The Mt. Vernon area began to evolve from predominantly rural to suburban. Using color graphics, this presentation will reveal interesting information regarding the characteristics and origins of the
people living in our community. We will see trends in population growth, labor force, housing status and educational levels over the last 70+ years with specific detail from 1940 on four small communities in the Mt. Vernon
area: Belle Haven, New Alexandria, Gum Springs, and Springbank. Campbell Gibson retired from the U.S. Census Bureau in 2006 as Senior
Demographer, after a 36-year career, and is a member of HHSC.

Mt. Vernon Genealogical Society General Meeting – Arriving in America presented by Sharon Hodges, Past MVGS President
Discussion: Millions of immigrants have come to call America home. For some the process was easy. For others it was more difficult and
more restrictive, but none more so than New York City. Knowing what it was like to arrive in New York City gives an understanding of arrivals in
other cities and the process for admitting aliens. This session is the culmination of immigration to this country. Each port maintained some sort of private or government-run immigration station, but none was as rigorous as Ellis Island. The initial reason for the opening of reception
centers such as Castle Garden, Ellis Island, or Angel Island in California, was to protect and aid new arrivals to this country. This
presentation covers arriving in New York City, pre-1855, through the Barge Office, Castle Garden, and Ellis Island, as it was more difficult for an alien to be admitted in this city than anywhere else. A good overview
of what the process was like for an alien coming to America. This program is Free and Open to the Public
