Caribbean waters and impalpable sand provide the ideal habitat for the Loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), which breeds here without disturbance.

Archaelogical heritageBut Sicily is far more than this stunning array of natural beauty and beaches. The archaeological heritage is quite unique. Selinunte, Segesta and the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento are without doubt the most impressive remains from Magna Graecia. Magna Graecia (Latin for ‘Great Greece’) is the name that was given by the Romans to the coastal areas of Southern Italy that were populated by Greek settlers.Selinunte is a very extensive site with remains of imposing grandiose temples from antiquity, set in a landscape of olive and palm trees overlooking the sea below. Segesta boasts a majestic and solitary temple, silhouetted against the clear blue

sky, and a small theatre at an altitude of 400 metres, overlooking a lush valley. Walk through the stunning Valley of the Temples, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, and be transported back to the fifth century B.C., when it hosted one of the most feared and richest powers in all the Mediterranean. The city of Siracusa is worth a special mention, as this pearl among Greek settlements has a wonderfully preserved theatre, which is a privileged location for watching classical Greek plays. But its true gem is the Duomo, a riot of various architectural styles and historical layers, with the Greek temple of Athena that was converted first into a Christian basilica and later into a Baroque cathedral.

1. Natural beautyProof of Sicily's outstanding natural heritage is its 77 nature reserves and protected areas. From Zingaro with its fascinating trails, both at sea level and up in the mountains to Stagnone, with its remarkable Phoenician site of Mozia and complex system of salt flats. And don’t forget Vendicari, a magnet for birdwatchers, or Torre Salsa, with its dazzling white marlstone.

2. Montalbano Elicona A municipality in the Province of Messina that is mainly known for the castle built in 1233 by the Emperor Frederic II.

3. EtnaAn active stratovolcano on the east coast of Sicily, Italy, in the Province of Catania, between Messina and Catania.3

here’s only one place in the world where, after an original granita-based breakfast, you can spend the morning walking amid

the magnificent mosaics of a fourth- century Roman villa, and then tuck into a lunch delightfully put together with the delicacies of the area, such as excellent fresh fish, accompanied by a wine that will take you by surprise. Or how about you take a stroll through mediaeval villages and pristine historic centres, whether you’re on your way down to breath-taking blue seas lapping white sandy beaches, or to a nature reserve with the beautiful Mediterranean vegetation providing a backdrop of colour and fragrance to the nests of breeding, colourful flamingos. End the day surrounded by the sheer perfection of a Greek amphitheatre, and watch a classical play of unparalleled charm. Or spend the evening discovering enchanting streets, in the footsteps of Federico Fellini and Greta Garbo, Oscar Wilde and Goethe, overwhelmed by the extraordinary presence of Europe’s largest active volcano. That place, with all its seductive beauty, is Sicily.

Explosive forceA universally recognized icon, Etna, is the quintessential volcano. Locals call it iddu (‘him’), out of respect and love, as if talking about a family member or unmentionable deity. Because Etna is a mixed blessing: on the one hand, it is an alienating black lava basalt desert, but on the other hand the volcano creates highly-fertile soils for citrus, almond, and pistachio and for Sicily’s world-famous vines from which the delicious wines are created. And last, but not least, the volcanic yellow brooms as dazzling as the sun. At over 3,300 metres high, Mount Etna is a must for trekking enthusiasts, with trails where nature explodes with the beauty of lush forests and is then forced to give way to a surreal landscape, dominated by continuous eruptions. The volcano, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2013, gives its name to the National Park, which develops on environmentally sustainable criteria. The

2 4

volcano rewards visitors by preserving its natural beauty, which can be enjoyed in many different ways. From bike tours to winter sports, Iddu’s northern slopes even offer skiing with a sea view.

Cool down Beaches are the undisputed highlight of a Sicilian summer. It’s the sea that dominates the panoramic views from the snowy slopes of Etna, enabling you

to pick out the beautiful volcanic Aeolian Islands, an archipelago nestling in calm and surprisingly warm seas. The Aeolian volcanic arc is a World Heritage Site since 2000, made up of the Panarea, Vulcano, Salina, Lipari, Stromboli, Filicudi and Alicudi islands. The Aeolian Islands are a popular tourist destination in the summer, and attract up to 200,000 visitors annually. Seven different islands, each with their own definite personality,

T cater for all types of visitors, from those seeking the bright lights to those yearning for the silence of wild remote places. Another archipelago of outstanding beauty, the three Egadi Islands, has amazingly crystal-clear waters. Ustica, for instance, is unrivalled as a deep-sea diving destination. Pantelleria, has verdant green terraces, is producer of caper and Passito wine, and its tradition of head-trained vines was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2014. And finally, the Pelagie, which is made up of the three small islands of Lampedusa, Linosa, and Lampione is definitely worth a visit. One of the islands, Lampedusa, is a fragment which broke off from the continent of Africa and came to Sicily in all its raw beauty. Bathed by peerlessly clear seas, in shades ranging from emerald green to deep blue, Lampedusa is famous for Rabbit Island, one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world, where

circuit of the most beautiful Italian villages? Add to that Montalbano Elicona, which was proclaimed Italy’s Borgo dei borghi (‘top village’) in 2015, and its mysterious Argimusco megaliths, a high plateau situated just North of Mount Etna.An area of small quiet villages, with a temperate climate, where tradition and folklore survive undisturbedly, and the food is excellent; this is what attracts the increasing numbers of foreigners who are deciding to buy houses in Sicily.Without necessarily purchasing a home, Sicily’s visitors are increasingly seeking to immerse themselves in the authentic

atmosphere of these small towns, with their rich history and traditions, and to join in with the daily life of the local people. There are more so-called ‘widespread hospitality’ initiatives, where tourists are accommodated in a number of buildings in the town centres or in luxurious and charming historic manor houses. It’s really a rather daunting task to choose just a few of the plethora of places to visit, emotions and opportunities that Sicily offers. Not so much an island as a continent: multifaceted, overflowing and seductive. Now the choice is up to you.For more information: visitsicily.info

But it’s not only Siracusa’s glorious past, as it was an important harbour town bringing along a lot of wealth, that has earned it UNESCO recognition. In fact, the city is also dotted with evidence of lavish, flamboyant Baroque from the late 16th Century that finds its highest expression in the town houses and churches of the Val di Noto. The town of Noto is the finest example of this architecture, inspired by both mythological icons and the celebration and pomp of the Catholic Church: balconies supported by monsters and fauns, town houses with allegorical figures and triumphs of decorations, churches enriched with columns, carvings and balustrades, flaunting an unbridled aesthetic splendour. The cities of Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù host outstanding town houses and sophisticated cathedrals built in the unique so-called Arab-Norman style, which began in the late 1070s, with characteristically massive walls, crossed arches, mosaics and red spherical domes. Here we see the result of Arab cultural syncretism, transposed by the French Norman kings who, by fusing the two cultures, created unsurpassed Mediaeval masterpieces, added to the UNESCO Heritage List in 2015.

Patrick Jansen (42) is Centre Director at Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet, one of the Netherlands’ largest outlet centres. This shoppers’ paradise in Lelystad, near Amsterdam, is home to 150 premium stores.

“Visitors immediately feel that everything here is about the experience, from the architecture to the stores with their unique ambiance and friendly staff. At Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet we aim to surprise our guests in different ways and allow them to discover that shopping here is no different to shopping in upmarket areas such as Amsterdam’s P.C. Hooftstraat.

“I’ve worked here for almost ten years and I’m proud of what we’ve achieved. We have managed to build a strong brand portfolio with premium brands such as Hugo Boss, Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren and Calvin Klein, as well as popular Dutch labels such as Scotch & Soda and Denham. All brands offer neatly ordered collections with accurate size charts. In addition, you can also find sample collections in the stores, which is great for treasure hunters. You might just pick up a pair of ultra limited-edition Nike shoes, or a dress that has appeared on the catwalk.

“As an outlet centre, we need to play by certain rules. Stores have to offer discounts of 30% or more, and collections must be at least three months old. However, collections that are sold at regular stores early in the season are still very fashionable when they become available to us.

“We try to serve our guests in any way we can. For visitors from outside the EU we have a unique offer: you can shop tax-free and immediately claim your refund in our Information Centre. In addition, our daily Shopping Shuttle bus runs from Amsterdam Central Station to and from Batavia Stad Fashion Outlet. And for anyone struggling to combine garments or with little time, we have personal shoppers available.

“A tip for our visitors: make sure to drop by our neighbours, the Nieuw Land (New Land) museum, where you can find out all about the Flevoland polder. Quite a special story, as we’re seven metres below sea level.” bataviastad.com

“ It’s all about the experience here”

Charlotte (31) and Dominique (32) Bertrums are the driving forces behind LOTT. gioielli. Making bold statements, their jewellery captures the hearts of fashion lovers, royals and celebrities.

Charlotte: “As a student, I worked in a boutique that also sold jewellery. If a pair of broken earrings were returned, I would take them apart, repair them and add new elements, such as silk flowers. My customised earrings sold like hot cakes. I really enjoyed it and saw an opportunity do something bigger. So I made a plan and registered with the Chamber of Commerce one year later. That’s how LOTT. gioielli began. I started out of my parents’ garage and soon had five shops selling my jewellery. And then, things began to snowball. We now sell in Dubai, Spain, Mexico, Aruba, Curaçao, Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands, and have 150 outlets. Our online shop also started up recently, which is very exciting!” Dominique: “I was a flight attendant and joined my sister in a marketing and sales

capacity two years after she started. We complement each other well. I’m service- oriented and understand customers’ needs. I’ll ask what people might want to change, or how we can serve them better. For example: customers like to match our jewellery to their wardrobe, so in stores that sell our jewellery, they can assemble their own exclusive collection, tailored to the colours of the clothing in stock.” Charlotte: “To me, the most special thing about our jewellery is the way it is made. We source the best silver in Italy, the highest quality stones from Asia and the most beautiful beads from India. Everything is shipped to the Netherlands where the final product is put together. We work with seven different suppliers, family companies for whom ethical business is paramount, as it is with us.” Dominique: “Our ambitions? We’ve just opened our flagship store in Den Bosch and want to open four more stores in the next five years. Our goal is to spread LOTT. gioielli even further around the world.” lottgioielli.com

Future Farmer

With his Floating Farm in Europe’s largest port city Rotterdam, Peter van Wingerden wants to show the world

that sustainable farming in the city is possible. Or, as he likes to put it, ‘city transfarming’ is the future.

change into account, we need to find new, better ways of living healthy and producing food locally. There’s a lack of space for agricultural activities, but in most cities, there is water in the vicinity. Building on water is obviously a lot harder than on land, but we’re proving that it’s possible by using the best technology and building vertically, like a multi-storey building. Since it’s new and unfamiliar to people, it’s important to involve the local community in the project. That’s why we have scholars and volunteers spreading the message of what we’re doing and why.

What kind of volumes can you produce? We’re starting with cows, but are also planning to include chickens and the growth of crops. We can potentially deliver 320,000 litres of milk a year, 7,000 eggs per day and one million crops a year. It might be nothing compared to the big corporations, but we feel people are ready for an alternative to these multinationals. As one of the world’s biggest ports, Rotterdam is a perfect test location for this alternative farm, but the real demand is in Asia and Africa, continents that are still rapidly growing and have a demand for alternative food production.

What is the Floating Farm exactly? It’s a creative living lab for alternative agriculture in the city, built on water. Using an advanced circular system, cows on this multi-storey farm for a large part eat grass grown under LED lighting and give milk, while nutrients are recovered from their urine and energy generated from their manure. At the same time, water is purified. The milk and yoghurt that are produced are sold to local resellers and directly to consumers. The project is carried out by three companies: Courage, the innovation institute of the Dutch Agriculture and Dairy sector; Uit Je Eigen Stad, a national frontrunner on city farming, which translates as ‘From Your Own City’; and my own company Beladon, a leading Dutch company on floating concepts. It’s the best of Dutch water and farming technology combined in one project. We’ve been working on this for almost three years now; the aim is to start production in early 2018.

How did you come up with this idea?I travel a lot and I’m often shocked by how cities around the world are designed. Everything is made of concrete, there’s a huge separation between rich and poor, and people are not in touch with nature anymore. Taking a growing global population and climate >

What makes field hockey a fun sport to watch? It’s fast and dynamic; there’s never a dull moment. Players have to be creative and super fit because of the high pace of the game. We cover more kilometres in 40 minutes than football players do in 90 minutes. There are also a lot of individual actions, and the ball is passed around extremely quickly.

How will you act as an analyst?I understand what it’s like to be out there, so I will definitely be sympathetic of the players and have a positive outlook. I’m not a very technical player, but I know the game like no other. I just prefer to focus on aspects like creativity and team play.

Who are this year’s favourites? The Netherlands, of course! But there will be stiff competition from England, Germany and Spain. It will be one big party with lots of orange (the Dutch national colour), singing and dancing by people of all ages and backgrounds. I’m definitely looking forward to that.

What are your plans now that you’ve retired from hockey?Well, as a former pro-athlete, I can’t sit still for very long. I’ve co-hosted a hockey camp this summer, just got married and have a lot of projects planned for this autumn. And hopefully, I will finally travel to my dream destinations Australia and Japan.18-26 Aug; eurohockey.org

Time fliesFounded in 1888, Dutch jeweller Schaap en Citroen has a rich history. Besides being a family business known for its exclusive jewellery from brands like Patek Philippe, Roger Dubuis, Zenith, A. Lange & Söhne, Breguet, Audemars Piguet, IWC and Cartier, Schaap en Citroen was one of the Netherlands’ first official Rolex retailers in the 1950s. They are also the exclusive retailer of watch brand Hublot, the official timekeeper of Amsterdam’s football team Ajax. Hublot just signed for a monobrand store on a triple-A location in the city of Amsterdam, opening in 2018. Good news for all non-EU travellers: the jeweller offers 21% VAT refund. schaapcitroen.nl

“A customer can have a car painted any colour he wants, as long as it’s black,” American automotive icon Henry Ford (1863-1947) once famously said. While he tried to say that colour shouldn’t matter when a car is of the best quality, there are plenty of drivers who like black cars for other reasons. Classy, sleek, sexy, mysterious or tough: black is the ultimate colour of classical elegance and sporty power. In Black Beauties: Iconic Cars (2017, teNeues), German car photographer René Staud shows us a series of iconic cars in black, from the legendary 1930s Alfa Romeo 8C to the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, the fastest production convertible ever made. Essays from renowned authors, about the significance and effect of the colour black on automotive design, accompany the photos. €98; books-teneues.com

Q&A Alfie Brown

‘Anger is a gift’ Every year in July, comedy café Toomler invites comedians from the UK, US, Australia and Canada to perform at the Comedytrain International Summer Festival. Alfie Brown from the UK is one of them.

What sort of humour works in which country? My material doesn’t change too much based on where I am, except for perhaps a joke about the current political situation in a country. I have noticed that Scandinavian and some other European countries – like the Netherlands – have a darker sense of humour than the UK, which happens to suit me perfectly.

Which country is your favourite to perform in and why? I think Amsterdam is the most beautiful city I have ever been to, and it doesn’t get better than Toomler in terms of comedy clubs. In Rotterdam and Delft, The Stand-Up Club runs great gigs. I also love playing in Norway; there’s a wonderful stand-up comedy culture there. Bergen Comedy Club and Latter Comedy Club in Oslo are both special.

Who’s your personal favourite comedian, and why?Jessie Cave. She’s given more than any comedian ever has; to me anyway. She’s mothering my two children and – true to form – does it hilariously. She is a wonderful comedian and is now developing a new show, which will be incredible, as was her last.

What is the biggest misconception about comedians? That we’re all cynical. I find comedians to be idealistic and full of love. Perhaps that’s why so many of us are angry. This is actually a good thing; anger is a gift. 5 Jul-5 Aug; comedytrain.nl

Beurs van Berlage

Andy’s PopArtWith themes borrowed from comics, advertising, television, newspapers and magazines, PopArt emerged as a new and exciting art form in 1960s America. As one of its most important representatives, artist Andy Warhol (1928-1987) now takes centre stage during the exhibition The Prints of Andy Warhol and other PopArtists at Beurs van Berlage. The exhibition includes the private collection of Dutch media mogul Lex Harding, who over the years acquired more than 100 screenprints of Warhol’s work and other memorabilia, such as notebooks and sketches. Part of the exhibition is designed to look like ‘The Factory’, Warhol’s famous workspace. Here, visitors can also discover how screenprints are actually made. 2 Jul-30 Sep; andywarhol.amsterdam
