DEGREE PAT H WAYSA great blend of college and university! Degree path-ways such as articulation agreements and transfer credits give you the opportunity to begin your studies at one institution and finish at another. Holland College has more than 150 agreements with universities and other post-secondary institutions across Canada, in the U.S. and overseas. There are a variety of joint applied degree programs and 2+2 programs that enable you to earn a university degree in as little as two years after you have your Holland College diploma, along with other agreements that can lead to certifications.

ACCREDIT ED PROGR A MAccredited programs are recognized across Canada as having met national academic standards. If you are planning to work elsewhere in Canada, a diploma from a nationally accredited program will ensure that you receive full credit for your training regardless of where you settle.

DIS TA NCE EDUCAT IONPrograms that offer a distance education option give students who cannot attend classes on campus the opportunity to continue their education via the Internet, off-site at your home or office, or by a combination of delivery methods such as a blend of classroom time and online learning. If you are unable to relocate to attend classes or are working full-time but would still like to upgrade your skills, these programs may be just what you need.

A PPRENT ICE SHIP TR A IN INGApprenticeship training begins after you finish your program at Holland College and are working full-time with a suitable employer. When you are working with a suitable employer, you will register as an apprentice, and Apprenticeship PEI will give you credit for the hours earned and block exams passed while you were at Holland College. Each trade has a certain number of hours that an apprentice must complete before he or she can take block training and move to up to the next level. Once you have completed the required number of blocks and worked the required number of hours for your trade, you can earn your Inter-provincial Red Seal by completing an exam. An Inter-provincial Red Seal, which is the mark of excellence for your chosen trade and the designation most employers will ask for, gives you the ability to work anywhere in Canada. The most successful path to an Inter-provincial Red Seal begins with a full-time Holland College program.

9HOW TO APPLY

Applications to Holland College are accepted through-out the year. You can apply online, by mail, or at any Holland College location.

SELECT ION PROCE S SHolland College accepts the most qualified applicants based on academics and relevant work and volunteer experience. Priority in acceptance is given to applications received by the application review date for each program.

For programs with September start dates, applicants selected in the first round will be informed of the status of their application by the Admissions Office by the end of April. All applicants are able to access WebAdvisor to check their status online by following the directions provided from the Admissions Office.

After the first round of selection, and as seats become available, Holland College continues to fill seats with the most qualified applicants.

If an applicant is not successful in gaining acceptance into their program of choice, they may request that their application be considered for the following year; or they may contact the Admissions Office to investigate alternate programs.

A DMIS SION REQUIREMENT SHolland College policy requires that the college establish specific prerequisites and selection criteria for each program to ensure that applicants are adequately prepared to be successful in those programs. Therefore the prerequisites for specific programs may vary considerably. All admission requirements for each program are detailed on the program’s listing on the website.

Depending on the program, other admission requirements may include a satisfactory medical and immunization report; references; a Police Records Check; certification or licensing such as First Aid, or a Class V driver’s licence; a birth certificate; participation in information, orientation or interview sessions; participation in aptitude or achievement testing; or demonstration of English language proficiency. Medical, immunization verification, and reference forms are available on the website. Follow the links in each program’s admission requirements to download the appropriate forms.

A PPL ICAT ION DOCUMENT SThe following documents must be submitted with all applications:

• A completed application form. • A resumé outlining work and volunteer experience with applicable dates, membership in groups, associations or athletics, awards and distinctions, and any other information about you that is relevant to the program.

• An official high school transcript forwarded directly from high school, even if you have taken other post-secondary training. Applicants currently in Grade 12 should have their first semester marks forwarded as soon as they are available. Final high school transcripts should be forwarded by the end of the school term.

• Post-secondary transcripts (if available). Applications for some programs can be very competitive. Additional post-secondary education can enhance an application.

• The application fee of $40 (for Canadian applicants), $125 (for Police Science applicants) and $100 (for International applicants).

Please note that you should submit as many supporting documents as possible prior to the first review deadline.

10 CENTRE FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT (CCE),HOME OF THE HOLLAND HURRICANES

The new Centre for Community Engagement, located on the Prince of Wales Campus in Charlottetown, features a 9,400 sq. ft. gym, a state-of-the-art fitness centre, a walking track, a fitness studio, meeting rooms, and classrooms. Students attending programs on the Prince of Wales Campus have full access to the facility.

As a Holland College alumnus and a current student, I would like to encourage you to consider Holland College for your post-secondary education. I graduated from Sport and Leisure Management, and am currently studying Business Administration. I have found my experience at Holland College to be very fulfilling, and continue to enjoy being involved in the college experience. Small class sizes result in more attention from my instructors, which is a great help when questions arise. Even though we are a college that is spread across the Island, we are a very close knit group, some would even say a family. Holland Hurricanes sports teams provide students with the opportunity to participate in organized sports. Our varsity teams represent Holland College on the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association and the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association. We also offer club level sports and a variety of recreational and intramural sports. The Hurricanes Training Centre is an up to date training area featuring free weights and specialized equipment for the serious athlete. Hurricanes Fitness also has a variety of classes to appeal to everyone from TRX Rip to yoga to Zumba and many more!

12 ACCOMMODATIONS

GLENDENNING H A LLLiving in residence is a great way to get the most out of college life. Glendenning Hall is a 186-bed apartment-style residence located on the college’s Prince of Wales Campus. The residence is made up of one, two, and three bedroom furnished units, each with its own kitchenette and bathroom.

You can only be accepted for Glendenning Hall after you have been accepted into a college program by the Admissions Office. You are encouraged to apply for a room when you submit your program application. You are encouraged to find your own roommates, but if you cannot, you will be matched as closely as possible based on the profiles (age, gender, program of study, hobbies, etc.) each applicant submits.

SLEMON PA RKCadets in the Police Science, Correctional Officer, Sheriff and Public Safety Officer, and Conservation Enforcement programs at the Atlantic Police Academy in Slemon Park, Summerside are required to live in the APA’s residence in single rooms for the duration of their training, excluding the on the job training component of their program.

OFF CA MPU SStudent Services maintains a list of off campus accommodations for Charlottetown, Summerside, Georgetown, O’Leary, Tignish, and Alberton. The lists include apartments, rooms with kitchen privileges, and room and board arrangements.

As a Holland College student, you can participate in a wide variety of activities both on and off campus. During Orientation Days at the beginning of the school year, you will be asked to identify clubs that you may be interested in. If there are enough like-minded students, Student Services will help set up a club for your group.

HOLLAND COLLEGE WELSHMEN COMMUNITY BANDIf you play a musical instrument, you can continue to pursue your interest at Holland College. The band performs concerts throughout the school year.

STUDENT SERVICES

ST UDENT ACA DEMIC SUPP ORT SERV ICE SSometimes a student entering a college program has challenges adjusting to their academic workload. It is important for students to discuss this with their instructor or with a member of the Student Academic Support Services team early in the school year.

Using a variety of resources including counselling, testing, tutoring, and assistive technologies, the team can help students with challenges increase their chances of academic success by helping them to be independent learners and encouraging them to reach their fullest potential. Services are provided free of charge to students. For more information about Student Academic Support Services, call (902) 629-4237.

COUNSELL ING SERV ICE SCounselling services are also available to all Holland College students free of charge. Our counsellors are professionally trained and provide a variety of counselling services in a confidential environment. Counselling services promote student success by helping students identify issues, overcome barriers to success, and to find effective ways of dealing with personal concerns.

14 FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Students registered in full-time or part-time programs may apply for financial assistance under the Canada Student Loan Act, and may be eligible for Human Resource and Skills Development Canada sponsorships.

EN T R A NCE S CHOL A RSHIP S A ND AWA RDSAll students accepted in full-time programs at Holland College are eligible for entrance awards and scholarships. Application forms and information about each scholarship and award is available from school guidance offices, from the Holland College Admissions Office, or on the website.

S CHOL A RSHIP S A ND AWA RDS FOR CURRENT ST UDENT SMany awards for enrolled students are provided through the Holland College Foundation. These awards are for all students, with various application requirements and criteria. See the website for details.

ST UDENT CA REER CENTREThe Holland College Student Career Centre (SCC) is a centralized service that connects our students and alumni to employers and industry professionals. Students from all over the world make Holland College their home while they pursue their educational goals. Prince Edward Island may be Canada’s smallest province, but there’s nothing small about the educational opportunities that await you here. About one third of our students come from off-Island – they like the smaller class sizes and the variety of programs.

15A BOU T PRINCE EDWA RD ISL A NDLocated off the east coast of mainland Canada in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Prince Edward Island has a population of 140,000. It is 224 km (140 miles) long and from 6 to 64 km (4 to 40 miles) wide. The Island is accessible by air and via the nine-mile long Confederation Bridge. PEI is known for the vivid colours of its gently rolling landscape, its pristine beaches, its world-class golf courses, its music festivals, and its friendly people. The Island is a popular vacation destination for all ages.

A BOU T CH A RLOT TE TOW NMost of our international students are enrolled in programs in Charlottetown, either at the Prince of Wales Campus or at the Tourism and Culinary Centre on the Charlottetown waterfront. The City of Charlottetown has a population of more than 45,000, and is located on the south shore. As the capital city of PEI, Charlottetown is the seat of the provincial government and has all the amenities of a capital city – a vibrant arts community, entertainment, restaurants and parks.

ENGL ISH L A NGUAGE TR A IN INGApplicants to Holland College must meet all admission requirements, including the college’s English proficiency requirements. While international applicants may choose their own English language training option, Holland College’s partner school, Study Abroad Canada Language Institute, located in Charlottetown, can assist you with English training requirements, providing a seamless transition from English language learning to the Holland College program of your choice.

ST UDY PERMIT SInternational students are required to apply for a study permit through Citizenship and Immigration Canada, part of the Canadian government. The staff of the International Office at Holland College will help you with the study permit application process. Some Holland College programs are U.S. Federal Aid approved.

BASIC FIREFIGHTING


Since the Atlantic Police Academy (APA), a division of Holland College, opened its doors in 1971, thousands of law enforcement professionals, firefighters, and correctional officers have received the training they needed to enter and remain in the field. In

addition to the Police Science (Cadet) program, the APA offers Basic Firefighting, Conservation Enforcement, Corrections, and Sheriff and Public Safety programs.

Some programs have a mandatory residence stipulation. Cadets in these programs must live in the APA residence in Slemon Park. The residential environment serves as a training lab in the same way as the driving track and firing range. The residence provides experiential learning that would not be possible if students interacted with one another in an instructional setting alone. Residence life allows students to develop skills in teamwork, problem solving, time management and communications, and for the development of attitudes such as gender and cross-cultural sensitivity that are essential to a successful career in the policing community.
