The Amon Carter Museum of American Art (3501 Camp Bowie
Blvd, Cultural District, 817-738-1933) is one of only three U.S. museums to host To See as Artists See, the first large-scale traveling presentation of The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C. Featuring about 100 masterworks tracing American art through its modernist beginnings to its post-war apotheosis, the exhibit will hang until Jan 6, 2013. Alexander Calder, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, and Georgia O’Keeffe are just some of the artists represented. Admission is, as always, free. Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra’s annual holiday tradition, Home for the Holidays, once again takes over Bass Performance Hall (525
Commerce St, downtown). From Sat, Nov 24, through Sun, Nov 25, the FWSO –– led by maestro Ron Spigelman and featuring the Southwestern Seminary Master Chorale and Dorothy Shaw Bell Choir –– will play all of your favorite seasonal songs and some Christmas carols, of course. There may also even be an appearance by the jolly ol’ guy in the red suit. For more information, call the box office at 817-212-4280. Another November, another Thanksgiving. But Lola’s Saloon (2736 W 6th St, 817-877-0666) has got you covered. After the Cowboys game on Thu, Nov 22, either grab your favorite family members or ditch the family and grab your friends to see a show
by The Frontier Brothers and Oh Whitney, two native Fort Worth rock outfits whose members have lived all over the globe but still consider Fort Worth home. Tickets are $7-10. Yes, Texas Ballet Theater is once again putting on a production of The Nutcracker, but this version will be all new and improved, with lavish new accoutrements. The world-class dancing will be the same, of course. TBT’s Nutcracker runs from Fri, Dec 7, through Sun, Dec 23, at Bass Performance Hall (525 Commerce St, downtown). Tickets are $20-95. As usual, TBT also will trot out its hilarious spoof, The Nutty Nutcracker, on Fri, Dec 21. For more information call the box office at 817-212-4280
and it’s not all about old-timey Christmas carols and The Nutcracker. Well, it is kinda. But not all of it!
holiday season is here,
In addition to new productions of The Nutcracker, Texas Ballet Theater will
bust out its annual spoof, The Nutty
Nutcracker, at Bass Hall.
HOLIDAYS 2012 9
Running through Sun, Dec 9, at Stage West (821/823 W Vickery Blvd, 817-784-9378), She Loves Me is based on the same source as the films The Stop Around the Corner and You’ve Got Mail and takes place in 1930s Budapest. The happy ending happens on Christmas Eve. Talk about a holiday pick-me-up. Tickets are $15-40. Featuring such chestnuts as “It’s Beginning to Look at Lot Like Christmas,” “The First Noel,” and “White Christmas,” Casa Mañana’s
’Twas the Night Before Christmas is a heartwarming tale of a mother’s efforts to rebuild a child’s Christmas spirit after Daddy goes off to war. The musical runs from Sat, Nov 24, through Sun, Dec 23, a Casa Mañana (3101 W Lancaster Av, Cultural District, 817-332-2272). We all know there’s no more Christmas-y town in Texas than Grapevine, and this year the city will be even brighter and more festive. Lone Star Christmas at the Gaylord Texan Resort
(1501 Gaylord Tr, 817-778-1000) includes 1.5 million twinkling lights, 12,000 ornaments, a 52-foot-tall rotating Christmas tree, a life-sized gingerbread house, and a bevy of exclusive holiday events and attractions, including ICE!, more than two million pounds of ice carved into your favorite characters from DreamWorks’ Madagascar films –– Alex, Marty, Melman, and Gloria all will be on display. Tickets are free-$26.95.
Edward Hopper’s oil painting “Sunday” (1926) will be on display this season as part of an
American survey at Amon Carter.
Your favorite Madagascar characters are on display at Gaylord Texan’s ICE! exhibit now thru Tue, Jan 1.
Fort Worth natives now residing in Austin and Brooklyn, The Frontier Brothers are returning home to play a set at Lola’s Saloon with fellow world-travelers Oh Whitney on Thanksgiving night, Thu, Nov 22.

Wine Pairing for Red Wine Lovers Everyone knows white wine usually goes with poultry, but what if you have a table full of red wine lovers? Or people who just don’t know any better? The answer: pinot noir. Its light body and deep fruity flavors are often hinted with
vanilla, which is sure to please every palate. If you want to get really crazy, serve it slightly chilled.

Near Southside
2012 brings excitement, crowds to the Near Southside Redevelopment progress and com-munity events continue to transform the Near Southside into one of the region’s most popular neighborhoods. Fort Worth South, Inc. (FWSI) is the non-profit working to revitalize the area, in collaboration with the City, private de-velopers, and the wide range of partners that bring popular and free events to the neighborhood throughout the year. FWSI’s ArtsGoggle, Friday on the Green, and Open Streets events again attracted thousands of visitors, while
newly established restaurants and pubs joined longstanding favorites to create the region’s most eclectic eating and entertainment destination.
The year’s progress extends far beyond popular Magnolia Avenue. The district’s other dining destination, Park Place Ave., received a dramatic facelift that created a beautiful streetscape lined with trees, lights, and new sidewalks. The Medical District attracted another major institution, with Moncrief Cancer Institute opening at Magnolia
and Jennings. And the district’s new hot spots include the Live Oak Music Hall & Lounge, Firestone & Robertson, Shin-juku Station, Amphibian Stage Produc-tions, Brewed, and many more. The future remains extremely bright for the Near Southside. Several major residential projects will bring over 1,000 new residents over the next few years, and plans for South Main Village prom-ise to make it the next success story. FWSI invites all to see the incredible progress of the Near Southside.
Car-free roads and a mix of activities make Open Streets fun for all ages.
Friday on the Green: a neighborhood picnic with great live music.
The new Park Place Avenue’s wide sidewalks lined with trees and lights.
