™MUSIC IN MOTION SERIES
INTRODUCTION For over 200 years music boxes have fascinated and enchanted millions of people the world over. Antoine Favre, awatchmaker from Geneva, Switzerland, invented the first mechanical musical movement in 1796. The industry stayed centeredin Geneva until 1811 when it moved to the village of Sainte-Croix, where the tradition lives on to this day. The most famousand world renowned manufacturer from this area is Reuge Music, which produces the beautifully toned Romance MusicalMovements. In 1996 - 200 years later - The Berry Basket started a music box tradition of our own. Designing the first of hundreds ofscrollsaw music box patterns to come, world renowned scrollsaw artist Rick Longabaugh, created a beautifully animatedChristmas Nativity. From this first pattern’s overwhelming response came new patterns for snowmen, santas, angels, Noah’sArk, carousel horses and more. Now, we are proud to introduce to you the first scrollsaw pattern book in our Music In MotionSeries™. This unique pattern book will show you how easy it is to create beautiful animated keepsakes that will be treasuredfor generations to come. With full-size patterns and step-by-step instructions, you’ll be creating enchanting scrollsawn musicboxes to celebrate the holidays of Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day and more.
SCROLLSAW TIPS & TECHNIQUES The following scrollsaw tips and techniques are intended to get you started and on your way to scrollsaw success. Not onlywill you find these techniques helpful in completing the projects in this book, you will also find that they can be applied tomany other scrollsaw projects as well.
LUMBER CHOICES Selecting the type of material to use is very important for the final outcome of your project. Although, plywood could beused for many of the music box projects contained in this book, we highly recommend choosing any of the beautiful hardwoodsavailable. The elegant nature of these heirloom-quality projects is far more impressive with the creative use of contrastinghardwoods. Mixing dark woods such as walnut, mahogany, koa, etc. with light woods such as maple, birch, alder, etc., willgive the most striking effect. If you do not have a local source for your hardwood lumber, please contact the following suppliers:
If you are relatively new to scrollsawing, we recommend using a high quality Baltic Birch plywood, for cutting such piecesas Overlays, Figures, the Tops and Bottoms, Turntables, etc. It is easier to work with, and can be stained for color contrast. If you are unable to purchase Baltic Birch from a local source, please contact THE BERRY BASKET at 1-800-206-9009for pricing.
SANDING For most projects, it is best to sand the work piece prior to applying the paper pattern and cutting the design. Once you’vecut the design, and removed the paper pattern, it may be necessary to lightly sand any glue residue remaining, along with any“fuzz” on the bottom side.
PATTERN COPYING The patterns contained in this pattern book are intended to be your master patterns. We recommend making photo/xeroxcopies of the project pieces and then using a repositionable spray adhesive to adhere them to your work piece. Please be awarethat some copy machines may cause a slight distortion in size. This is more likely to occur on very large patterns. We highly recommend copying your patterns and using a repositionable spray adhesive to adhere them to your work piece, rather than tracing. It is easier, less time consuming, and far more accurate!

BLADE SELECTION There are many opinions pertaining to which blade to use with which type and thickness of material, as well as, with howintricate the design in the project is. The more time you put into scrolling, the more your choice of which blade to use willbecome personal preference. For the beginning scroller we make the following recommendations to get you started:
DRILLING STARTER HOLES When drilling starter holes it is best to drill close to a corner, rather than in themiddle of the waste areas, as it will take less time for the blade to reach the patternline.
VEINING Veining is a simple technique that will bring a lifelike appearance to your project. The veins of a leaf or the folds of clothing will look more realistic when thistechnique is incorporated. To vein, simply saw all solid black lines as indicatedon the pattern. Some areas ofthe pattern you will be able tovein by sawing inward fromthe outside edge, while in otherareas you will need to drill atiny starter hole for the blade.
STACK CUTTING Stack cutting is fairly simple to do and can save you a lot of time whenyou have 2 or more identical pieces to cut for a project. If you are fairlynew to scrollsawing and stack cutting, we recommend cutting no morethan a total thickness of 1/2” for best results. On projects with fairly simple shapes to cut out, 2 or 3 layers could beheld together by double-sided tape, or by using spray glue on paper to
sandwich between thework pieces. On more intricateprojects we suggest using #18 wire nails or brads slightly longer than thetotal thickness of the stack you are cutting. Tack the nails into the wasteareas you will cut out, along with a few around the outside of the project. If the nail has gone through the bottom of the work piece, use a hammerto tap it flush, or use coarse sandpaper to sand the points flush with thebottom of the work piece. If you are stack cutting hardwoods, do not tack the nail too close to thepattern line or it may cause the wood to split. Another option would be topredrill for the nails with a slightly smaller drill bit so the nail will fit snuglyand hold the layers together securely.

REPOSITIONABLE SPRAY ADHESIVE Using a repositionable spray adhesive is the easiest and quickest way to transfer a pattern to your work piece after photocopying it. In a well ventilated area, lightly spray the backside of the paper pattern. Allow it to dry only until tacky - approximately20 - 30 seconds. Then apply it to the work piece, smoothing any wrinkles if necessary. Two common problems that sometimes occur when using repositionable spray adhesive for the first time is applying theright amount onto the back of the pattern. Spraying too little may result in the pattern lifting off of the project before you havefinished cutting. If this occurs, clear scotch tape can be used to secure the pattern back into position. On the other hand, sprayingtoo much will make it difficult to remove the pattern. If this occurs, simply use a hand held hair dryer to heat the glue, whichwill loosen the pattern allowing it to be easily removed.
AUXILIARY TABLE Most scrollsaws on the market today have an opening in the table around the bladethat is much larger than what you really need. This often causes small and delicatefretwork to break off on the downward stroke of the blade. An easy solution is to adda wooden auxiliary table to the top of the metal table on your saw. To make an auxiliary table, choose a piece of 1/4” - 3/8” plywood similar to thesize of your current saw’s table. If you choose, you can cut this plywood to the sameshape as the metal table on your saw, or any shape or size you prefer. However, we dorecommend that you make the table larger than what you think you will need for thesize of the projects you will make in the future. Next, set the auxiliary table on top of the metal table. From the underside of themetal table, use a pencil to mark the location where the blade will feed through. Then turn the auxiliary table over and drill a1/16” - 1/8” diameter hole, or slightly larger than the blade you will be using. Finally, apply a couple of strips of double-sided carpet tape to the metal table on each side of the blade. Then, firmly pressthe auxiliary table onto the double-sided carpet tape, making sure that the blade is centered in the hole.
FOOT INSTRUCTIONS Several of the patterns contained in this book require the cutting of 2 or more Feet. Following is a simple procedure thatproduces the decorative wooden Feet that will elegantly support your music box treasure. Please see the “Options” section foradditional Foot ideas.1. Prior to applying the spray adhesive to the back of the pattern, fold where indicated on the dashed lines. Then spray withthe adhesive and apply the pattern to the work piece.
2. Turn the workpiece upright so that the portion of the pattern marked “Rear View” isfacing up. Then, cut on the solid line.
3. Next, turn the work piece so that the “Top View” isfacing up. Cut following the solid line

If the store where you purchasedthis pattern book does not carry the music box movement kits, please callTHE BERRY BASKET at 1-800-206-9009 for tune selection and pricing. Please note: Before cutting the opening in the Frame for the music boxmovement, compare the size and shape of the plastic bottom with the solidline on the paper pattern as sometimes it varies. The plastic can be sanded tofit the opening, if needed or you can also recut the opening.

FINISHING The finish can be applied to these projects either before or after assembling. For many of the pieces, especially those witha fair amount of fretwork, it is easier to apply the finish prior to assembling. We recommend a method called “dipping.” Pouryour favorite penetrating oil, such as Watco Danish Oils, Tung Oils, etc., into a dishpan type of container. Then dip your piecesinto the oil, allowing the oil to get into all of the cut out areas. Drain off the excess oil, and follow the oil manufacturer’sinstructions for buffing, drying time, additional coats, etc. For a glossier, more protective finish, allow the oiled pieces/projects,to thoroughly dry then spray with a clear lacquer or varathane coat.
OPTIONS By using your imagination and creativity, you’ll see that many of the Overlays, Figures, Turntables, etc. are interchangeablewith one another. Another option to consider is using a 2 3/4” diameter forstner bit or hole saw to bore the hole into the Framefor the Music Box movement, rather than cutting it. Cutting the 1 1/2” thick Frame will probably be the most challenging part of these projects. Using the proper size of scrollsawblades will make this step easier. A universal #9 or larger blade is highly recommended. This will make cutting quicker andmore accurate. Also, depending upon the type of wood you are using for the Frame, you may want to consider using a doubleskip-tooth or precision blade.
Another option for the Frame, is using a bandsawwith a 1/16” - 1/8” blade for cutting the outsideshape. Note: that the more teeth per inch on theblade, the smoother the cut will be. Still, another option for cutting the Frame, isto cut two 3/4” thick pieces of wood separately, and then secure them together with wood screwsor glue. To start, adhere the paper Frame patternto one 3/4” thick workpiece. Cut the outer shapeand opening for the music box movement followingthe solid lines. Then, countersink in 2 locationsfor #6 x 1 1/4” F.H. woodscrews, being carefulto NOT countersink where indicated for attachingthe Bottom to the Frame. Secure this half of theFrame to the remaining 3/4” thick work piece withthe #6 screws. Next trace the shape of the topFrame half onto the bottom half workpiece.Remove the screws and separate the 2 halves. Cutthe bottom half on the solid line, then reattach the2 halves together with the screws, and sand wherethey meet until flush. This method also allows you an opportunityto add a decorative touch to the middle area ofthe Frame. Prior to reattaching the 2 halves of theFrame use a roundover or beading bit where the2 halves meet. Options pertaining to the Feet, include usingdecorative wooden finials, portions of axle pegs, spindles, or smoke stacks, as well as brass, metal,or porcelain pull knobs designed for drawers orfurniture. Again, use your imagination and becreative!

ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTIONSHORIZONTAL TURNTABLE PROJECTS
Assemble by first attaching the Top to the Frame with glue and finishing nails or silicone. Next attach the music box movementto the topside of the Bottom with screws or silicone. Before the silicone sets, be sure to position the Frame over the Bottom tomake sure the music box movement is aligned correctly. Then secure the Bottom to the Frame. Next, attach any required Arch,Feet, Overlays, and Figures where indicated, securing with wood glue or silicone. Now attach the metal turntable to the bottomof the wood Turntable with silicone and then attach the Figure to the top. Finally, attach the turntable and key to the music box.NOTE: It is important that the music box movement bottom be in contact with the wood (topside of the Bottom) in order tohave the best tone. If using silicone, be careful to not use too much as it may squeeze out from between the 2 pieces and getinto the movement itself.
VERTICAL TURNTABLE PROJECTS Assemble by first attaching the Back Cover to the back of the Frame. Then attach this assembly to the Base. Next insert themusic box, securing with screws or silicone. Use silicone to attach the metal turntable to the back of the wood turntable. Thenthread the metal turntable onto the music box shaft. Attach the Overlays, and any Arch and Supports, where indicated, usingglue or silicone to secure. Next attach the Front Cover to the Base. Thread the key into position. NOTE: It is important thatthe music box movement bottom be in contact with the wood for the proper tone. If using silicone, be careful to not use toomuch as it may squeeze out from between the 2 pieces and get into the movement itself. Also, an option is to choose a Footstyle from one of the other projects, cut 2 attaching them to the Base.
