Brexit Plan WantedNo frills carrier Ryanair is calling on the UK Government to release its post-Brexit aviation strategy to airlines early enough, so that the carriers will have time to plan their routes. If Prime Minister Theresa May sticks to her current timetable for leaving the EU, she’ll trigger a two-year process towards the end of Mar, the airline’s chief marketing officer Kenny Jacobs has told media. Airlines need to plan their routes a year ahead of their launch, and they still don’t know whether the UK will remain in the EU’s open skies ar-rangement, he said.“We are now a year away from need-ing to know what will happen with open skies. If we don’t know by this time next year what are airlines go-ing to do?”

New Aeromexico RoutesAeromexico will launch two new routes to the US later this year, advises Discov-er the World. From 01 Apr, it will start operating daily flights between Mexico City and Detroit; and from 01 Jul, the carrier will offer six flights a week between Guadalajara and San Jose. The new routes will be operated using 737-700 and 737-800 aircraft.

. . . JAWS WorkshopFor more information on Aeromexico, as well as a range of other airlines and tourism boards, agents across the country are urged to head along to one of the JAWS roadshow events being held next month. There’s also travel prizes up for grabs for agents who attend the events. For details and to register CLICK HERE

Singapore Airlines is helping put Laos on the map for Kiwis after tak-ing league star Shaun Johnson and his family to trace their heritage in a new show which debuts tonight.“When Shaun first discussed the idea of travelling to Laos, the timing was perfect. SilkAir had just launched its services to Laos so we were more than happy to help him and his family fulfil their dream visiting his mother’s homeland,” says SQ gen-eral manager Simon Turcotte. SilkAir launched flights to Luang Prabang and Vientiane in Oct.Shaun Johnson: Across the Mekong premieres on Sky Sport 2 at 2030.

A cap on aircraft movements at Sydney Airport (SYD) is sabotaging decades of global campaigns to at-tract visitors, says the Tourism and Transport Forum (TTF).SYD has an overnight curfew banning most flights, but it’s the restrictions on aircraft movements within operating hours that the TTF is campaigning to change. These include a maximum of 80 aircraft movements per hour, and measuring aircraft activity every 15 minutes—while other airports such as London Heathrow put caps on an-nual movements, says the TTF.Airlines are increasingly unable to se-cure early access or are forced to circle SYD if they arrive early. “Aircraft noise and emissions have dropped dramati-

cally, and airlines continue to invest billions of dollars in larger, next-gen-eration aircraft, which produce a fraction of the noise and emissions of their predecessors,” says TTF head Margy Osmond. “Yet today’s space-age planes are restricted by stone-age regulations, and we are increasingly constraining the ability of internation-al tourists to enter our country, many of them at the end of long overnight flights. This can only hurt Australia’s growing visitor economy.”The TTF is urging the Federal Govern-ment to increase hourly slot caps and movement caps to 90 aircraft per hour and get rid of the 15-minute measure, enabling greater flexibility.

Uniworld Free Photography WorkshopsUniworld is offering complimentary floating photo workshops to clients on two of its Europe river journeys in 2017. Designed for beginner to interme-diate photographers, the workshops will feature a dedicated photography instructor throughout the cruise, photo assignments each day, opportunities for clients to shoot side-by-side with the photo instructor during shore ex-cursions, tips and one-on-one critiques, and lectures on how to capture that perfect snap. The workshops will be available on the 16 Jun departure of Gems of Northern Italy and the 28 Jun departure of Highlights of Eastern Europe. Space is limited and the promo code 1FPW17 must be used when booking.

Akaroa Health Charge?A $5 levy has been proposed for cruise ship passengers arriving in Akaroa to help pay for a new health centre, ac-cording to a Stuff report. The Akaroa Health Hub fundraising committee wants the Christchurch City Council to introduce the levy as one of a number of ways to help pay for the new centre, which will replace its earthquake-damaged hospital. The community wants to see passengers contribute more to the town, and they often use the health centre while in port, Stuff reports. However Cruise New Zealand boss Kevin O’Sullivan has said wide-spread consultation would be needed before the levy could be introduced. A $5 levy introduced in Stewart Island in 2013 took 35 years of lobbying and an act of parliament to bring into effect.

APT has released a fly free deal on its 2018 Europe river cruises of 14 nights or longer, as the company says its Europe bookings are going incredibly well.“Since Jan Europe has just gone ab-solutely crazy this year, it’s growing and growing,” says APT New Zealand manager Anne Waterhouse. “And it’s great for agents as there’s a high delivery of product and most clients become repeat passengers.” The 15-day Magnificent Cruise ex Amsterdam to Budapest is the com-pany’s most popular with Kiwis (and also Waterhouse’s favourite cruise), and is priced from $7795pp share twin. “It’s a great trip, we have

many people doing the same cruise again—and some people up to five times,” says Waterhouse. “I think fin-ishing in Budapest is a highlight—and we’re seeing an increasing number of people option to add-on a land tour, which is great news for agents as they can earn commission on that too.”In addition to the fly free offer, APT has also released 2018 travel at 2017 prices for those travelling in Mar, Oct, Nov or Dec 2018.

. . . Increased PopularityThe 14-day Douro Delights is fast becoming a popular option for Kiwis, says Waterhouse. “I mean Europe has just gone absolutely crazy this year, and the Douro itinerary has become a really hot pick, I think in part be-cause people think [Spain/Portugal] are safe places to visit.”Kiwi agents should now have sup-plies of its new 2018 Europe River Cruise Brochure, and APT reminds agents that they can earn commis-sion on all of the cruise components of the booking due to its all-inclusive packages. The APT superdeals are subject to availability and conditions for book-ings before 30 Apr.

Geckos Adventures has i nt ro duce d a new range of trips to some lesser-known festivals around the world, to meet grow-ing demand from millennials. “While Oktoberfest and La Tomatina might have long been on ev-ery young traveller’s bucket-lists, the overwhelming popu-larity of these events means you’re often surrounded by crowds of tour-ists or in long lines for overcrowded beer tents,” says Intrepid Group md James Thornton. “We believe these next generations are savvy travellers – they’re more interested in spending their holidays dancing in the laneways of Essaouira or parading through the streets of Manhattan on Halloween.”As such, the new one-off range of Geckos Fest ivals tr ips include the Ganaoua Festival in Morocco, which sees around 500,000 revellers flock to the port city of Essaouira each year for the traditional music festival. A nine-day trip is priced

from $1015pp and departs 27 Jun. Also on offer is the Seoul Kimchi Making Festival, which sees over 4000 people working together to make nearly fifty tonnes of fresh kimchi. A trip to the three-day festival is priced at $2680pp, departing 02 Nov. And for those who have wanted to experience Mexico’s Day of the Dead Festival, now’s their chance. Geckos is offering clients the chance to celebrate the Oaxaca with prices from $1715pp, departing 30 Oct. It has also launched trips to Cuba’s Santiago de Cuba Carnival and Hal-loween in Salem, Massachusetts. See geckosadventures.com for full details.
