Make an impact IF you are looking to make a boldimpact with a splash of colour on yourpatio or garden border this summer, dianthus will not let you down.
No garden should be without thesesuper summer flowers, which are alsoknown as garden pinks or border car-nations.
Carnations are most famous in theircut-flower variety as they can bestored longer than any other flower and can be opened to very high qualityflowers from tight buds.
Border carnations are the taller of thetwo varieties, hence the name, whilepinks are shorter and look great introughs and containers, as an edgingplant. One of the great beauties ofthese plants is that they do not needstaking. Most pinks have double flow-ers and some have lovely intricate pat-terns on their petals.
Garden pinks are perfect for sunnyspots where the soil can be hot and dry.
They are the easiest type of carna-tions to grow, they are tough plantsthat need very little attention and withthe hot summers weve been promisedthis year, pinks have good reason to beso popular.
They are certainly low-maintenanceplants, growing as mat-forming ever-greens well suited to surviving the win-ter months outside.
However, they do not survive long, sotake cuttings to replace the old clumpsafter two to three years. Now is thetime to propagate pinks by cuttings.
Select healthy looking, non-floweringshoots 10cm to 13cm long and pull themout at a joint. This is known as taking
a piping. Insert these pipings firmly,5cm deep and about 10cm apart eachway, in sandy soil, preferably in aframe, but failing this in a shady borderoutdoors and keep well watered.
They should be well rooted and readyfor planting out by the end ofSeptember.
They can also be easily grown fromseed sown under glass from January toMarch, or sow May to August for flow-ers the following year.
Carnations may be able to survivedrought, but they benefit from a dailydrink in hot weather, but only onceevery two or three weeks in the winter.
Garden pinks are generally unscent-ed, but new varieties have been intro-duced which are heavily scented, which make them perfect patio plants.

AFTER a long dark win-ter of keeping your bodyunder wraps its time toshed the layers and getbody-beautiful in timefor your summer holi-day.
Winter weather can betough on locks, causingdull, lifeless hair, butthis can be fixed with aquick trip to the hair-dresser.
Highlights will bringhair back to life, although be careful not
to dye your hair justbefore you go away, unless you are particu-larly fond of the colourgreen.
While youre at thesalon talk to your stylistabout changing yourlook if you have becomebored of your currentstyle.
Top trends for summer2009 range from thecropped and pixie bobsfor short hair, to sleekand straight or bohemi-
an waves for long locks.Next stop, your face
cold winter weather is notonly tough on your hair, but it also dries out yourface, so now is a greattime to get a hydratingfacial, which will boostmoisture and leave yourskin glowing.
As for the rest of yourskin, a body exfoliatingtreatment will removedull, dry surface cells, soften skin and stimulatecirculation resulting invibrant, replenished skin.
To tackle those milk-bot-tle legs invest in a spraytan.
Timed right, this willgive you the confidence to
step foot on the beachand will gradually fade asyour natural tan builds inthe summer sun.
All thats left to worryabout now is those finish-ing touches.
Manicures and pedi-cures are a holiday mustfor most women adding atouch of glamour whenat the pool side.
Toe nails are straightforward and can be glam-med-up with bright nailpolish or eye-catchingnail art.
When it comes to fingernails some may prefer toget artificial nails tocover-up broken, unevenor brittle nails and keep itelegant with a classicFrench polish.
