The bon fires of October crackle in the cool crisp night. The sound of a lonely owl serenading the flying clouds mingles with the noise below of raucous trick-or-treaters. If you look close you might see the silhouette of a witch shadowed on the moon. Black cats and bats abound plastered in cardboard form on windowpanes and doors. Yes, it is finally fall and it is reverently October.

Who could ask for more than this color rich month? Fall leaves carpet decks and patios. Fireplaces lit at dusk add to the cozy feel that this season brings. Pumpkins fill breads, muffins and even soups, to say nothing of vacant lots, waiting to be chosen for the perfect jack-o-lantern. With all of this I find my bags of yarns have aged to perfection. Like fine wine, the colors are deeper, and more vibrant, the style chosen in the heat of August, now makes sense. I can’t wait to start sliding the stitches across the needles.

I begin my annual meditation on what I will create for whom for the up coming holiday gift giving marathons. October and inflated expectations about what can actually be accomplished seem to go together. Football games replacing Law & Order become the back ground music for my knitting. Even the 90 degree California weather seems cooler because it is in this glorious month. If it were up to me I would probably proclaim October the official month of knitting. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Decant the yarn and begin the celebration!

Cuddle up this fall with our slouchy boucle jacket, knit in tris a fanciful blend of wool and acrylic with a hint of mohair to soften the mix. This yarn from Lana Grossa is fun to play in and the result just yummy. We’ve worked the fold back ribbed collar in Furetto a classic virgin wool which variegates to match the Tris. The Furetto works the large cabled pullover which peeks out from under the jacket to make a true statement. Either piece can be worn alone, but together they sing.

L’Atelier knits in Cashmere this month with Noro’s Cashmere island, a typical blend of color woven together in a blend of cashmere and wool. Our jacket works in a simple basket-weave detailing, scattered across this "must own" piece. The neck closes slightly off center with one beautiful button. The vent in the back adds one more element of unexpected style.

Taken from the dream pages of our 2003 Catalog this sweater is a true L’Atelier work of art. The intarsia knit of animal print and abstract shapes couples beautifully with the selected palettes of color. We’ve updated the colors and worked it in Stacy Charles new Mist. This 100% soft twist cashmere is a privilege to work with. The yarn gauges to perfection on a 9 needle and the result is one to be proud of.

Sweaters are the rage. Fashion can’t get enough of them and of course neither can we. Our square necked mock cardigan is knit from Alpaca With A Twist’s wonderful Highlander. This chunky tweedy

alpaca and wool blend knits on a #9 needle into an unbelievable soft fabric. We’ve added some great imitation rib detailing on the back and front yokes and then included in 2 great oversized

buttons to accentuate the positive.

Back: With #9 needles cast on 76(86, 96)106 sts and work in st st until pc measures 11 ½(12, 12 ½)12 ½". On the next knit row, dec 8(10, 12)14 sts evenly across, 68(76, 84)92 sts. Then work in pattern st below:

Sleeves: With #9 needles cast on 32(36, 40)40 sts and work in st st increasing 1 st each side every 13(12, 12)11th row 7(9, 9)10 times. When sleeve measures 17 ½(17 ½, 18)18 ½" or desired length to underarm, shape cap: bind off 4 sts at the beg of the next 2 rows, then dec 1 st each side every other row until cap measures 4(4, 4 ½)4 ¾", bind off 2 sts the beg of the next 4 rows, bind off rem sts.

Finishing: Lightly steam all pieces. Sew shoulder seams. From center back neck with #8 needles and RS facing, pick up sts along back neck edge down to corner, place marker, pick up sts along bottom of front neck edge, place marker. Pick up same amount of sts from this point to center of back neck as in the first pick up. Work in K1, p1 ribbing, decreasing 1 st each side of marker every other row until ribbing measures 2(2, 2 ½)2 ½" bind off in rib. If a heavier rib is desired, work 1 row of purl on the RS (turn row, then continue in rib increasing 1 st each side of marker every other row until this portion measures 2(2, 2 ½)2 ½". Join rib at back neck. If using heavier rib, turn rib to inside on turn row and slip st into place. Sew side seams and sleeve seams. Set sleeves into armholes. Sew on buttons.
